My husband and I spent one night at Poshtel. Our first impressions on entering were how aesthetically pleasing the hotel is, with so many amazing and unusual artefacts. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful, and booked us a table for dinner nearby. Later as we settled into our room, (Music Room) we began to see that it was not suitable for two people. It had one bedside light, and one huge armchair so only one of us could sit down. Luckily we were only staying for one night, as if we were staying longer there was no place at all to store clothing and only two clothes hangers in the room! It began to rain in the evening, so we thought we would enjoy the lovely bar/lounge area of the hotel. We like to play board games, so we went to the bar/lounge area just before 8.00pm and were planning to play there as we had no table and only one chair in our room. We were disappointed to be told that we couldn’t sit there as the area would be closed up at 8.00pm! We would have gone out to a bar in town but due to the heavy rain, we bought drinks, went back to our room and played our game on the floor, which was our only option - and thankfully we still have the flexibility to sit on the floor! The room really needs two smaller chairs rather than one massive arm chair, plus a small table if guests are not allowed to use the bar/lounge area in the evenings. The music stand though nice, was taking up space that could be filled by a small table. The bed was very comfortable, however when lying down, I felt quite uneasy with a huge and very heavy looking musical instrument suspended just above my head! In Feng Shui design, this is a ‘no! no!’ Although the rooms are artistically designed, functionality and customer comfort was missing. A few small tweaks to make the room more functional and comfortable for two weary travellers to relax would make for a five star experience!

The rooms in this hotel are small but the furnishings are modern with some of the local steampunk flair. The welcome was excellent. The Victorian area is just steps away. There is a key code to get in after 8pm. The breakfast is provided but minimal (yogurt, cereal, toast and fruit).

This was a top of the line hotel. The hotel has a beautiful lobby interior. Obviously a lot of thought was put into the decorations throughout the hotel. The room was cozy, bed comfy, sheets soft, and amenities luxurious.

People who work here are amazingly nice and helpful. I needed to buy a lock for my luggage and asked the woman who was working the delicious included breakfast where I could buy one. Not only did she point me to a close Warehouse store, she went on-line to make sure they had it and then told me the aisle to go to to save me time!

The place itself is very well appointed. Don't stay in the double room out the back unless you like the sound of forklifts from the Countdown loading bay early in the morning. The emergency exit sign was blaring in my eyes all night. The shower door needs to be inside the shower as a seal is missing or you will be swimming out of the bathroom. Cold floor in winter. No onsite parking. Our car was on the street. Not good enough.
If you want service when out in the communal lounge area don't bother ringing the bell on the desk. I did this twice and then eventually had to telephone the owners to get them to come out and serve us. I said I rang the bell twice to be told by the lady she was deaf and anyway, was in the middle of their dinner! Sorry to be an inconvenience to them. Maybe they should choose another career than hospitality. Tea bags not replaced. No milk for the second night. Just my 2 cents.

You were bad tempered from the moment you stepped into the hotel. I apologised profusely that I didn't hear the bell and explained I was going deaf and we were preparing dinner. You were nasty and obviously my light hearted explanation annoyed you because we should have been at the desk 24/7. We have been in hospitality all of our lives but when faced with nasty people like yourself, we always turn the cheek. But in your case I am not going to.

We had a fantastic 3 day stay. Very clean and the most comfortable beds!
Good central location.
Host was very accommodating in moving us to another room when due to unforeseen circumstances the stairs were a problem.
Highly recommend, Gerhard and Glenys

Quirky hotel in a very quirky town! Our room was large, quiet and very equipped. The bed was really comfy, which is a real plus! All rooms are decorated with sporting themes which is unusual, but works really well. The continental breakfast was very nice with a choice of several different breads for toast and jams, marmalade etc. Juice and coffee was plentiful and helped yourself.

A good place to stay when coming to view the penguins.

We stayed in the "Pick and Shovel" room. Rooms are themed on the owners personal collection of memorabilia. The decor is fresh and good quality throughout.

The rooms was comfortable with a generous bed. The shower had good pressure and plenty of hot water.

There is a lift and most accessibility needs could be met here.

There is a lounge space by reception that you can hang out in. A complimentary breakfast is provided there with cereals, fruit, yoghurt, and I was able to make a fresh fruit salad.

More than the quality finish and the quirky collection, one of the biggest assets of this property is the hosts, Aidan and Shelley. They are warm, welcoming and engaging without getting in your way. Great suggestions for coffee, dining and activities. I'd definitely recommend the hotel and them!

We booked at short notice, very happy with our 'pick and shovel' mining-themed room which was warm and comfortable with a great bathroom (including steampunk toilet roll holder!). Sports fans will love the wall of fame on the ground floor with all codes represented. A simple continental breakfast was include in the tariff and we enjoyed talking to manager Shelley about the hotel and its history in the morning. Would love to have stayed longer, definitely recommend Poshtel and historical Oamaru. And don't forget to try the lift!

Absolutely a very, very good choice of hotel in Oamaru. Each room has its special decoration - we were in a "navy room". Very personalised check in and guidance. There were earplugs in our room - but absolutely no noise during the night.
There is buffet breakfast - a very nice and cozy one.

Lovely hotel located conveniently for the historic centre and good restaurants. Friendly staff, clean rooms and fun decor. Although on the main road there was hardly any traffic noise but you did get the Countdown delivery in the morning so the ear plugs supplied in the rooms were very handy. Would recommend and return.

Answer from Shelley

We have disabled / wheelchair parking behind the hotel. It is down a small right of way off Eden Street. Look out for the Disabled car park sign beside the managers apartment.
