it is a wonderful place to stay, we loved walking around the property exploring the old school, listening to birds singing, and of course loved our clean room and comfy bed! Shane was super helpful and contacted us about some books the kids left behind and sent them back to us. It is not only a resort but also a museum, we loved every bit of it!

Unexpected level of niceness, photos do not do it justice. Booking and check in easy, Shane super friendly and showed us around. The studio was spotlessly clean, comfortable and we loved having the huge verandah which the dog could hang out on. Grounds well kept. They offer a continental breakfast but it wasn't up on the website so we took our own. Wish the new owners well it a special spot that deserves visitors

Travelling up from the Catlins I found Teschmakers Resort online and it was about the right distance for our drive north. Arriving after dark it was a little from the main highway but what a pleasant surprise when we pulled up. The hotel was an old boarding school and has been converted to a high standard. It stands in a park like setting with a sweeping drive. The staff was very helpful and attentive on arrival and showed us to our room which was large with a kitchen, Although there is no catering on site currently a breakfast box can be provided and they do offer some frozen meals for late arrivals. Overall I had a very good stay and loved the sense of history and would recommend it highly.

Firstly the buildings and surrounds were beautiful, the room we stayed in was big, warm and modern. However, the restaurant has been closed for a long time apparently, so I phoned ahead to ask what cooking facilities would be there. I was told just a microwave so I should bring my own “finger food”. When we arrived I saw there was actually a hot plate, microwave and and a bench top /cooker oven in our room/ but no pots/pans to enable cooking. Our email confirmation from the hotel said that because the restaurant was closed, a continental breakfast would be available- when I asked about this I was told no it wasn’t. The friendly Asian lady that checked us in and provided this information - also checked in an Asian family directly opposite our room. It was surprising to see they had been delivered a meal - as a plate with a lid on was outside their room in the evening. I wouldn’t stay again, I would choose somewhere closer to the town, with food options for my family.

A hidden gem to stay in Oamaru. Set on an old nunnery and boarding school, this accommodation is a great place to explore and see the old history. The room we stayed in was extremely spacious. The only downside was limited cooking facilities - we had a microwave and bench top oven/grill, and a plug in cooktop, but no frying pans to use on the cooktop, so prepare to bring a microwave meal or drive into Oamaru for dinner, as unfortunately the restaurant was closed during our stay. Otherwise it was a pleasant stay.

Absolutely stunning in every way. Set in the countryside rather than the town it was a beautiful example of the local architecture and a stunning example of the wealth of Catholic community nearly 100 years ago. The room was huge, with spacious bathroom and kitchenette with fridge, kettle, toaster etc. So spotlessly clean I felt like I was the first person to ever stay there. The lovely lady on the check in gave us a short talk on the history of Teschemakers and the future plans of the resort, then encouraged us to make ourselves at home and explore the chapel and the grounds. We loved it. The restaurant was currently closed, but we had a huge lunch so just took the makings for a cheese platter to enjoy with a glass or two of wine for dinner. Sheer Bliss!

Teschemakers Resort is an old convent school with attached chapel. It's been totally refurbished to provide accommodation, and the managers are looking at ways to improve the experience.
I travelled with my parents and we were given a choice of rooms. We chose one that had a large king bedroom with three single beds down the other end of the suite in a 'lounge' room. We had a small galley kitchen and a spacious light bathroom (with a bath!). Being only a couple of years old, everything was very new and tidy.
The chapel is open all the time and you can visit there (it's stunning even if you're not religious) and the grounds are spacious - a mix of very old trees (with a grotto), fruit trees and grassed areas. All of the convent's buildings exist and you can walk around them (but those not done up are not accessible internally). There is a small 'museum' of the convent's history in the main entrance way.
If you want a quiet night's sleep in a beautiful setting, then this is the place. The restaurant was closed but I think that's only because there were only two parties staying that night and COVID is still making an impact. It didn't matter as we had the faciities we needed to get ourselves dinner and breakfast.
It's about 20 mins or so drive out of Oamaru to the south and 'off the beaten track' so you get to see some of the beautiful countryside at the same time.

Very interesting place away from the busyness of life. 5 ladies and they had some lovely rooms with balconies. Good size rooms. My King deluxe Studio had windows which faced into public deck/outdoor area which I didn’t care to open (no view or fresh air). The history of the place was interesting and the chapel was lovely for weddings. Resturant is not functioning at present, buy food before you arrive.

I took a Year 13 student group to stay for one night - the same as last year. The service was fast and efficient. The rooms are beautifully decorated and very comfortable even on a cold and frosty night. I would thoroughly recommend this place.

It is Top 1 in our South Island by my kids. The resort is in countryside and we feel in life style accommodation and with modern facilities. The room is big and very clean. The adjacent chapel is very beautiful and a bonus. The ground are big with old trees and further with fruit trees. The staff Joe and Jill (Gill) are very friendly. We arrived at late afternoon and then head to Blue Penguin Colony which is 12-15 min driving (13km away) . We will definitely recommend to our friends if they plan to stay somewhere around Oamaru.
