I don't care what others say. You will appreciate Criterion hotel because of its classic beauty. The photos I took when I was in Oamaru is now my desktop wallpaper. Criterion is like a beautiful lady. Just look, you don't need to hear her speak.

We stopped in for lunch on our way through town, have been here many times before and loved the food. Sadly it is mainly accomodation and just a basic bar now. Drink selection was great but the snacks we ordered were very lack lustre, The food options are extremely limited and I wouldn’t go near the platters. I have to say the staff were lovely and service was quick, just sad to see our favourite stop in is no more.

Built in 1877 the hotel is currently owned by a lovely couple called Marise and Herbert. There are only about eight bedrooms and I got the only room with the ensuite bathroom but I’ve stayed in many of the other rooms and the two communal bathrooms are very clean and modern. There is also an upstairs kitchen and a lounge and every morning they put on a good continental breakfast. Even if I’m not staying at the hotel I always drop in for a quick pint or two of Emersons and there is also a pretty decent menu. The hotel is reputed to be haunted but I have never experienced anything except the strident tones of the local penguins fighting and fornicating on the street when they come in from the sea in the evening (they usually quieten down after about 10pm.) The second night I was there one of them had eaten too much and it just couldn’t squeeze into its hole underneath the Steampunk building. I thought about bringing it up to my room but I didn’t want to share the bathroom with it. I hope its OK. Anyway – if you’re in Oamaru or just passing through please drop in to The Criterion and support a small and most excellent local business. The nearby Grainstore Gallery is also a must- see!

Staying at the Criterion is an experience not to be missed. You really do feel you step back in time, but with all the modern-day creature comforts. The location is perfect, being at the helm of the historic Whitestone City. We stayed in the ensuite bedroom (which had a little room we dubbed the parlour, where we enjoyed a nightcap each night), however we would happily sleep in any of the rooms as the shared bathrooms are very good. Marise and Herbert are wonderful and welcoming hosts, the bar and associated lounge and dining rooms are a pleasure to be in (the atmosphere is amazing), in fact it was so good that we returned from sight-seeing to have every meal at the Criterion. When we booked it had to be done via email - Marise was very quick to reply - this is a reflection of the good old-fashioned ways that makes the Criterion special, and is well worth the small effort. Without a doubt we will be back and will be recommending the hotel to our friends and family.

We were really well looked after. Suberb accommodation, warm and quiet. The Hotel is in the centre of the Historic Town and is a trip back in time. (in a good way) The pub is full of characters and offers a full selection of craft beers. There is an Off Licence for the special beers
