My partner and I spent a night in this hostel and it was already too much. Unpleasant and endless night. First thing : When we made our reservation, we put our arrival time at 5pm, but we also precised in the comments space that we could get there before. Finally, we arrived before 3pm which is normally the time at which the reception closes before reopening at 7pm. Nobody. The door was closed before the time. We are greeted by two people who tell us that the receptionist/manager has just left and that we must call the number on the door. I call her, introduce me and she tells me we were supposed to arrive at 5pm. I explain to her that we also stipulated than an earlier arrival was possible. She almost grumbled at me, saying no. I double-checked my reservation and it was written in black on white that we could arrive earlier with our residence place. Second thing : The welcome. The receptionist/manager arrives. She unloads her groceries of her car, barely says hello to us and puts her things in the kitchen, quietly, before taking care of us. Working both in Tourism, in France, we can ensure that the first contact says a lot about the structure. We don't like to say that the customer is king but when he has paid for a service, he is a priority, especially compared to the groceries ! We clearly felt like we were bothering her to speak politely. Welcome : 0. Third thing : The men's bathroom/toilets are equipped with a single shower. But the most disturbing thing is that the hooks to put your towel on are onto the main door. Therefore, you have to close the main door if you don't want other people to see you naked (if they come to brush their teeth or if they go to the toilets) because you have to get out of the shower and go to the door. The women's bathroom/toilets are equipped with two showers, one of which wasn't working. You have a sign asking you to wash your hands thoroughly because of COVID 19 but she puts a handtowel that everyone uses .... ? Also, when I turned on the shower, the water leaked everywhere. I had to put the shower head back on. And let's not talk about the layer of dust that you can see on the walls if you look up. Fourth thing : the hostel has been reorganised into an old house. Very well. But the layout is to be reviewed. The two double bedrooms are in the living room. Living room which means TV and TV means noise. If you have light sleep, it's not even worth it. We had a lot of trouble falling asleep as we could hear the TV deeply and all the light was passing through the room. There is a gap between the floor and the door that allows you to pass a plate. We had to put on a towel to dim the light. That night we were there with two guys. Very nice to hear one fart, burp, spit, eat on the other side of the door when you are in your bed. And not even able to turn off the TV and the light. They were in the dorm next to our room so during our many awakenings during the night, we could hear them talking, laughing, snoring etc ... Because the walls are as thick as a sheet of rice. Also, very nice to get out of the room to turn off the light in the living room and smell cigarette. Finally, it's impossible to connect to Wi-Fi. The morning, we ran off (that's the word) as fast as possible ! We had already frequented YHA where the reception, hygiene and sound-proofing were perfect. Moreover, we have already worked as housekeepers in a campsite so we know what it's like to clean. We do not pretend to be experts, quite the contrary; but when we put a certain price in a room, we expect a certain quality. In short, get a move on ! There is much better, even for one night !

I always try and stay at YHAs if I can because of previous good experiences. I initially had booked to stay here for one night but then attempted to move my booking to another night due to plans changing. 3 phone calls and 1 email later I still had not managed to get confirmation that the booking could be changed despite it still being a couple of weeks before my trip. Ended up cancelling the booking and finding somewhere else to stay.

Not like any Yha I’ve stayed before. 4 bunk rooms. Very tight fitting into small rooms. Squashed bathrooms with door pretty much to the toilet so need to squeeze in and close the door and squeeze past if anybody brushing teeth to wash hands

We stayed longer in Oamaru but due to the rude owner lady we decided to only stay one night in the YHA. She did not introduce herself as the owner when we arrived and started being rude, once in her office she spoke down on us and wouldnt just give us the key but continued criticising us and tourists. When we were in the lounge later on she came and had a look at what we were doing, ordered us to turn the heater on and touched my friend's hair - none of these in a friendly manner! The hostel in itself was clean and our twin room was confortable (it can get cold but you have two blankets and water bottles). It was not full so we had no problem using the lounge and kitchen but a bit more people and it can be tricky as it is quite small. We ended up staying at the empire backpackers and were welcomed as it should!

Me and my partner stayed in this hostel for one night as part of our travels after seeing the blue penguins of Oamaru. We booked a private room which was actually very reasonably priced. As we were arriving in the evening we called to check that we would still be able to stay when arriving after hours and the lady on reception kindly made the effort to arrange this for us. The room we stayed in was very clean, cosy and had everything you would need including a blanket heater, which was a bonus! The same can be said for the facilities which were spotless! Having stayed in many hostels before cleanliness is normally the diminishing factor but you can really tell that the owner puts care into the standard of cleaning here. On our departure we were greeted by the lady on reception (who I believe is possibly the owner) and her friendly cat and dog and asked us if we enjoyed our stay and kindly recommended some activities for us to do in Oamaru. Pleasant experience, friendly staff, would stay again. 🙂

We LOVED our stay. The small house with few rooms and guests felt more like staying at a relative's house than at a hostel. The kind lady at reception was very hospitable and made sure we had everything we needed. There were lots of tips and ideas about what to do around town posted on the walls and a nice warm fire in the evenings. The kitchen and bathrooms were clean and never too busy. Location is very close to the middle of town, so that's handy if you don't have a car. If you do have a car, there is plenty of parking on the road next to the house. Also, bonus points for having a sweet kitty and puppy for guests to pet.

Family room with bathroom, four bunks with a bathroom, kitchen and sitting area. Greeted by a beautiful orange cat who made us feel at home 😊 Location, easy walk to countdown and close to town Parking, all on street but no shortage or issues Facilities in room where good except heater had no controls and was set too low for those less hardy! Washer and dryer is available after 4 pm but was always in use. Bed was comfortable and warm Staff where very helpful and considerate Disabled access for man with walking stick was fine Accomodation was simple and fine for one night

I really appreciate to stay there. I got a spotless and very comfortable hostel. The hostess is very friendly and attentive. It has all facilities to stay for a time. The kitchen is fully equipped and the toilet has a nice hot shower.

I have stayed at YHA hostels across the world and this was a disappointment. We arrived and the lady on reception was initially late back - 4 plus guests were sitting outside waiting to be checked in. Then over the course of our 2 night stay the lady on reception was extremely rude and unhelpful. If I thought it would have made a difference I would have complained and maybe even asked for a refund. It genuinely was poor and set the tone for the stay. The hostel is old fashioned and cold. The bunks are are uncomfortable and bathroom is small and weird (there is only one shower). Oamaru is beautiful and a bit of a hidden gem, worth a day visit at least. That said I would (and I don’t like saying this) avoid this YHA. Positives - the location isn’t bad.

We had a great time staying at the Red Kettle, the owner couldn't have been more accommodating and friendly. The rooms are comfortable, you get 1GB of WiFI which turned out to be plenty if you're out and about all day. The kitchen had everything you might need and the bathrooms were kept clean. Overall this is a really nice homely hostel and we had a great time staying there!
