This place is gorgeous and so cozy. The people running this hostel are so friendly and helpful. The space was very clean, and it was in a great location. Near to town, great view, walkingish distance to a lot.

I stayed with a friend for one night and we really liked our stay at the Oamaru Backpackers ! The hostel is cozy, very clean and well located. The view from the kitchen guarantees a very nice breakfast time. We were welcomed by Graeme, who was very nice and particularly attentive to his guests. We had a wonderful time there !

The charm and decor at this hostel is amazing. It’s so homey and cute, it’s a great place as a home base in Oamaru. The hostel is a home converted in to a hostel and there is only one dorm and about six private rooms. The dorm is comfortable, with USB outlets and lights at every bed. And even a sink in the room. Beds are pretty comfortable but a bit hard. Showers have good pressure but not great temp control. WiFi is also strong overall but anytime your phone goes to sleep you have to log in again. Kitchen is pretty well equipped but there is very minimal fridge space. That’s something I hope they can improve on because it gets full very fast or doesn’t close completely because it’s so full. Views from the hostel of the ocean and sunrise are incredible and the wall of windows really lets it shine. Close to the two penguin colonies too and great street parking. Stayed for four nights and loved the city. Highly recommend going over a weekend. Would definitely stay again.

I stayed in Oamaru for a day to see the blue penguins and had a room here. Especially considering the cheap price, I was pleasantly surprised with how positive of an experience it was. The family that owns and operates it is very kind, accommodating, and welcoming. The rooms have just been redesigned quite nicely - some of sweeping ocean views and private sinks (don't even have to leave the room to brush your teeth!) The kitchen is very spacious, there's tons of condiments - most places i stayed at in NZ don't even have black pepper! The continental breakfast is a pretty nice bonus, but not as much as the garden in the back where you can pick fresh veggies to eat. They recycle and compost and the common areas are clean and updated. Wifi connection is pretty good and it's a 4 minute walk from the brewery and center of town, even walking distance to the penguins. I had a fantastic stay here and would recommend without hesitation to anyone visiting Oamaru.

This was the best backpackers I've personally ever stayed at. The host was friendly as, the rooms were super clean and inviting. For $33 you can't get much better than this! Super awesome lounge with a huge window that looks over the harbor and a game room with fun activities for everyone. I stayed in the bunk room (penguin room) which had curtains on the beds for added privacy and wooden bunk beds that made the place feel that much more homely. There were barely any other people there and we ended up having the room to ourselves. If you're passing through oamaru and need a place to stay for the night choose this!! We booked only a couple hours before we arrived and it was well worth it. Cutest little place ever. Would recommend to anyone.
