I have stayed there a few times, as i travel a lot and this is extremely close to airport. Plus for small fee they do pick up and drop off to airport, as well as safe car storage for a reasonable fee. There is a spacious lounge and open fire, big tv with some great movies. The kitchen is quite big and clean. The rooms are better than many backpackers, no bunk beds. Its not super cheap, but nothing is in New Zealand. The owners are friendly, but are super cautious about wanting money up front for everything. Even though i've stayed often, they don't operate on trust ever. However, having talked to them, i understand that this is due to the untrustworthy behaviour of patrons who run off without paying. And i guess it makes their life easier to just stick to a money first policy. Its not the laid back atmosphere of some more hipe young backpackers. But it's not really a place that people would stay for a long time. I would definately recommend as a place to come and go from to Auckland. And don't take offence at their attitude regarding payment. Its not personal.

My partner and I stayed here after arriving at midnight. Disappointed to find out after our stay that the hotel does offer a shuttle even though they told us they didn't operate at midnight although website clearly states early morning departures and late arrivals. Room was clean and tidy, bathrooms were ok. Rooms have very thin walls which made for an early morning after our late arrival. Don't think we will be back.

I had a very wonderful trip in New Zealand during Jan 08-22, 2013 with my friend. Auckland was the last stop of this trip, then fly back to Gold Coast Australia in the very early morning on Jan 23, so we decided to stay at this backpacker as they are the only backpacker near the airport.

It was my worst backpacker experience in New Zealand and Australia, their facilities is normal, but the service is poor, the staff wasn't friendly, the lady staff was so impolite and impatient, and rude. The lady was asking me and my friend to pay the room charges upon check in, but my friend remembers that she provided all credit card detail when she booked the room, so we said we need to double check and my frd was checking the confirmation email on her phone, then the check in lady was long face then showed us a copy of email which it's not belong to us, and said "see, we didn't charge anything from the credit card, all detail is only for guarantee purpose, your country people is not trust on other people" This is an insult, then we had a small fight on this, anyway we paid without checking and went out right away, as we didn't wanna stay longer at the desk with her.

My trip was ruined! I will not recommend anyone to stay there.

I booked a room by phone after visiting the hotels website. I specifically asked for my own room at the time of booking and advised that i didnt mind sharing the kitchens and bathrooms.

I arrived late at the hotel (approx 10.30pm) and was shown to my room. I was horrified to be shown to a motel unit shared by another 2 females in which i was unable to lock my room. The Manager had to wake these 2 women up as they had put the latch on the door so that i could be shown to my room.

I refused to sleep there due to the fact i wanted a room that i could lock my door, especially as i didnt know the other women i was sharing a motel unit with.

I was then given a motel unit to sleep in. I went into the kitchen to make myself a cup of tea. The cups were all very dirty and i had to wash one up before i could use it. I was suprised to see that there was no milk in the fridge either.

I was woken on several occasions by banging and the sound of the Manager asking the 2 women in the motel unit next to me to open the door.

I didnt feel safe at all. Especially as i heard the latch on my front door go.

Then at 1am in the morning as id drifted off to sleep, i was awoken to an unknown women standing in the motel kitchen. I believe she was the owner???

I was TERRIFIED. I didnt know who this women was and why she was standing there. I was given no reason why.

Terrified i got dressed and went to see the person who had shown me to my room but i was unable to contact him. At this time the women was still walking in the motel unit.

I was about to leave and was then asked by the women for my keys, I demanded my $60 back which i got and so i handed back the keys.

As i left she did a gester to refer to me as crazy. I asked her what type of place she was running!!

So I DO NOT recommend staying here. I booked here because the lonely planet recommended it and it was near to the airport. I think i would have rather spent an extra $40 and felt safe and had a goods night sleep.

Airport Lodge Motel

The staff went out of there way to make our stay stress free, Todd offered us his car to use which we found a real blessing as we didn't want to go through all the hassel of hiring a vehicle for 2 days great kiwi atmosphere and I will definitely be staying there again the rooms were spotless the staff helpful and overall a memorable experience!

Thank you

Last year we hired a car and stayed in BBH hostels all throughout NZ, but nothing, just nothing could compared with the atrocious behaviour of the managers in this hostel. Scott was so rude, he wouldn't let me discuss the problem I was having with my credit card as it was Easter, and a bank error. I know they need credit card for security, but upon offering him my husband's credit card he refused, saying he will only try once, and my husband was not me, so he ORDERED me off the property! We are a retired couple, love staying in hostels all around the world, but never would I recommend this one to anyone.

I had booked a room with a bathroom on line. When I arrived I was told that I was sharing a bathroom. The accommodations appeared dirty and disorderly. There were people in the hallway drying their hair. The Asian female refused to stop the payment for the room. I called booking.com and they said it was up to the manager to not charge for the room. I called the asian woman back and she was rude and ignorant and still refused to not charge for the room. This was a typical bait and switch scam. I would not stay at this "hostel".

In an old motel opposite the cemetery on Kirkbride Rd, a street of resuscitated motels, Skyway Lodge is barely hanging in there.
The backpacker market in the vicinity of the airport is poorly serviced and this hostel is obviously exploiting that lack. No effort appears to have been made to give value for money - it is extremely overpriced and very shabby - if its history were made a feature it could be a charming 50s -style lodging house but as it is the fact that the beds, remaining fixtures and fittings and even the linen look original just spells mean and exploitative.
I paid $63. for a single room (with 2 single beds) with no light fitting, no fan or heating and an empty fire-alarm holder. The linen was thin and the walls (also thin) sported a slap-dash coat of paint. The carpet needed cleaning (and vacuuming under the beds!) For this price I got to share one of several shower/toilet rooms which again were sub-standard though clean. Even with 2 people sharing the room would be worth at most half what I paid.
The communal kichen was basic but the lounge/dining room appeared cosy.
The efficient and friendly shuttle to/from the airport is $5 each way, however considering the inflated cost of this accomodation transport should have been included.
Ten minutes walk up the road is a small shopping centre with a small poorly-stocked supermarket, a bakery and two restaurants which are good but pricey.
If overnighting in Auckland be organised and book early to get a good deal elsewhere. For this money it is possible to get a room with bath, possibly breakfast and FREE shuttle in a 3 or 4 star hotel close to the aiport. Otherwise travel into Auckland to one of the better hostels - even with the cost of the commute you'll save AND be more comfortable.
Not recommended.

My friend and i stayed here and we found that its location is pretty poor, with no descent shops, parks or restaurants nearby, just a busy road leading to the airport.
Not alot to do inside either as the TV was only showing two channels and no films/dvd player to use either. Very boring..
We also had our bed sheets changed as they where grubby. A young german guy who was working their at the time, told us that they are only changed if they looked 'dirty'..:(
I would add that the kitchen was very clean and with good equipment and many freebies left by other travellers.
In my opinion you are far better being in the city to enjoy it at your pleasure, (at a cheaper better place)
The cheap local bus does regular Airport trips from/to the city.:)
