Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We absolutely loved this motel. It's definitely a little older, so don't expect the Hilton, but a sweet mom & pop motel that has incredible views. Sam, the owner, showed us so much love. He woke us up in the morning so we could see the dolphins jumping from our room (honestly, that's the best part of this place) and told us the history of the land. Apparently a seal came up on the property and had a baby once. Sam told us of catching a blue shark when fishing in his boat just a ways out from the motel. So if you're a marine animal lover, this is absolutely the place for you!

A tiny bit of the cons...right behind the hotel is a train track. Is it NOT quiet. The road is just out front so you get a ton of truck noise too. Just bring your ear plugs and bug spray if you leave the windows open. Again, the place is a bit older and could be amazing with some improvements, so just know what to expect. We loved Sam and Emiko, though our room was left open after cleaning and we had our passports in there, so eep, that was unnerving. But it's just the kiwi way, so trusting and open. It wouldn't stop me from staying there again.

All in all, we loved our time at this motel and in the South Island. We can't wait to come back! Sam and Emiko, thank you so much for the great hospitality!

Clean, tidy, well equiped room. Great shower, very comfy bed. Views to die for. Wake up in the morning, make coffee go back to bed and enjoy the wildlife. Orcas and Dolphins 300m away, whales bit further out (needed binoculars for them). No internet, no sky tv, but who needs it with views like that. Owners are lovely, lovely people.

old fashioned but clean and owners offer any help they can. Very small kitchen which was basic. Not quiet though as faces busy road with constant lorries. Rail line at back but not frequent trains. Wildlife can be viewed from window although taking binoculars would help.Out of kaikora so you can escape the tourists. website pictures are accurate as to what to expect.

We stayed here for one night on our way south after a week in Picton. Oaro is located about 14 Kms south of Kaikoura on State Highway 1 - the beautiful coastal drive section of this main road.

This is dolphin (and whale) watching country – the dolphin watching boats are often to be seen in the early morning, just off the shore opposite the motel. Why pay to go on a boat when you can see dolphins from the beach here (and swim out with them if you wish). Of course, with all wildlife things, there is no guarantee the dolphins will oblige on the day you stay – but we are assured they do appear most mornings.
The four rooms look out across a garden and the road, straight on to the beach. Our room (number one) had a double bed and one single, a 2 person settee, table and 3 chairs, TV, kitchenette with cooker/oven, microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster and cutlery and crockery and cooking utensils sufficient for 3 people.

A separate area at the back has a shower, hand basin and toilet. Everything was clean and nicely decorated. We found the room very comfortable and cosy. It was lovely sitting on the deck outside the door and later at the table inside looking out through the full width windows / sliding door to watch the waves breaking on the rocks.

Tea, coffee, sugar, milk, salt, pepper and also washing up liquid and soap are provided, Together with a decent sized towel and face flannel for each person.

Emiko and Sam are very welcoming and friendly with lots of interesting local information. Thank you both, for a lovely visit.
