What a great place. We were in the apartment. We felt we were here too short. We saw a bit of the farm, but we mainly went to Kaikoura to spot the whales and dolphins. Rachel is an excellent hostess who immediately made us feel at home. The apartment is large and all amenities are available. We also turned on the fireplace in the evening because the temperature did drop in the evening. The view of the farm is fantastic and you can take a good walk there. The welcome basket was very extensive and we enjoyed it for days. We definitely want to come back again to experience farm life a little more.

Our family stayed in the Quarters and absolutely loved it. There is lots to do and explore and the Bartrams are such a welcoming, friendly family. Thank you! The kids loved feeding the animals and petting them, going for walks around the farm and staying in the cosy, rustic Quarters.
The way you decorated the toilet was very creative and entertaining and all the animals gave a real feel of the country. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

If you love sunsets, bathing outdoors under the stars, munching on homemade scones and local honey, and learning about life on a sheep farm, this is your paradise. We arrived to a stunning sunset and a farmstead surrounded by majestic hills and mountains. We stayed in the Quarters - a small unit with an excellent bed, living area with books, tv and wood stove, and a modest but well equipped kitchenette along with a lovely deck and outdoor area. Includes private shower, outdoor bathtub as a romantic option, and total privacy/serenity. Lots of special touches from soft white bathrobes to a basket of homemade and local foods waiting upon arrival. This is not a luxury spot - you should love and be curious about farm life. If you want hikes with awesome views, visits to watch the sheep dogs herd the sheep, and quiet talks with the farm manager to better understand rural life, this is really an exceptional place. Kurt and Rachel are wonderful and welcoming hosts with a loving family. They are eager to share their knowledge of the region and have many tips for where to eat, where to go, and what books to read. Kurt took us up to the top of the 4000 hectare ranch and explained his operation to us. Rachel helped us plan our itinerary and walked us around the barnyard to meet the local very adorable pig, rabbits, chickens, ducks, pony, cats and dogs. We extended our stay and WILL BE BACK. Come here if you want to taste life on a rural farm with a family dedicated to living the good life.

If TripAdvisor had a 6 star category, this place would be in it. Rachel and her family give the warmest, most genuine welcome I have ever received.
I stayed in the flat attached to the house, but there are also 'glamping' caravans called the 'shepherds' huts', and a detached self-contained cottage called the 'quarters'.

The flat is gorgeous; tastefully furnished and well appointed, with views from the deck over the surrounding farmland across to a mountain range in the distance . It has one queen bedroom, with a living / kitchen, large bathroom and laundry. The gardens around the house are beautiful.

The breakfast provisions are generous and mostly fresh from the farm or Rachel's kitchen. She is an excellent cook, and her cakes have to be tasted to be believed.
The farmstay operates within sustainability and eco-guidelines. There are eco-initiatives such as native tree planting on the property.

Then there is the opportunity to help out on the farm. It is a working farm, and if there are chores to be done you could just go along as a spectator, but before you know it you will probably be helping to muster animals.
There is also a menagerie of animals in the farmyard; pigs and a piglet, horses, a goat, a pet sheep, ducks, chickens, dogs and rabbits which require care and feeding Children would love this.

The farm is about 20 kilometres inland from Kaikoura with all its fabulous attractions and facilities.

Lynton Downs is an exceptional place, and an exceptional experience. Highly recommended!

Our family of 4 recently stayed in the Quarters and loved it! The Bartrams are a lovely family and incredibly hospitable. The accommodation was perfect -- beautiful, peaceful setting, and lots for the kids to do. They loved feeding and being around all the animals. The welcome hamper included bread and cookies freshly baked by the farmer's wife. My husband and sons even got to "help" move a big herd of sheep down the road (sheep dogs did most of the work), which was a highlight for them.

We stayed in the Quarters for two nights. The hosts are really nice people and very helpful. They have a very cute little dog even walk with us in the morning. The quarters is small but functional, just enough for four people. There are so many animals in this farm and the hosts even showed us how their shepherd work. Very nice family. It's fun to stay here and experience a farm life. But it is 17km away from the town. I like the farm house very much but to experience Kaikoura, maybe it's a better choice to stay near the beach. But if you would like to have a farm experience, Lynton Downs Farmstead will be a great choice.

We stayed in the Quarters which was charming and cosy. We arrived after a long rainy day travelling and Rachel had turned on the heaters and left a lovely welcome basket full of treats. This was my 5-year-old son's very favourite place to stay during our trip to NZ. He loved all the animals and enjoyed helping with the chores. Rachael, Kurt and their family were so welcoming and generous with their time in sharing their beautiful farm. Easy drive into Kaikoura for shopping, dining and whale/dolphin/seal watching. The best of farm and ocean!

We are a family of 5 (3 boys ages 9,11,13) from the US. We motorhomed around the South Island for 2.5 weeks and staying at Lynton Downs was one of our favorite experiences (and we had some great experiences!!). The Bartrum family could not have been nicer or more accommodating! We felt like we were staying with friends. Our kids played with their kids and we had some great talks with Kurt and Rachel. The farm itself is magical. They had wonderful, friendly pets including sheep, pigs, ducks, bunnies, horses, a goat, dogs, cats....my kids were in heaven! I feel like we got a true feel for New Zealand farm life. They even took us to their neighbors to watch them sheer sheep! We stayed in the Quarters which is so quaint and comfy. We looked at all the other accommodations and they all look great too! Rachel has not missed a detail! Can't say enough good things about this family and their beautiful farm!

My husband and I spent 3 and 1/2 weeks honeymooning in the South Island and Lynton Downs was our first Farm Stay experience. Needless to say, we are not only sold on the concept but also generally obsessed with this lodging option (we later traveled to Te Anau and stayed at Dusky Ridges Farm Stay). Lynton Downs is a newer Farm Stay and the hosts could not be more gracious, the breakfast option more generous. We stayed in The Quarters, which is impeccable in its charm and organization. We even took advantage of the lovely tub outside for a bath after our morning run in Kaikoura (there is also a full, modern shower!). The hosts are gracious and informative and will no doubt be successful in this venture. Could not recommend it more highly.

Travelling around the South Island for 2 weeks as a family of 4 (2 boys - 8 and 6 years), we can easily say that Lynton Downs was definitely our favourite accommodation! The location was just beautiful, The Quarters were snug but clean and included everything we needed for a three night stay. The boys loved the animals; feeding the lambs was a definite highlight. The Bartrum family were very hospitable particularly Rachel, such a treasure with so much awesome NZ travelling advice. The drive to Kaikoura is approx 20 mins which isn't too far for dinner and to reach the dolphin cruise which has to be a must when in Kaikoura! The boys are desperate to go back they had such an amazing time!

"The Quarters is a more rustic option than the bedroom and living area/kitchen attached to the house. WE loved it but if you want even more pampering, consider the rooms attached to the main farm house. This is not a hotel - this is a farmstay and one that we won't forget!"
