Detailed Reviews

We stayed at Kaikoura Cottage Motels for 2 nights in October 2020 and we will be staying again.
The cottage was well positioned to be private, with its own private outdoor space and parking space. It was very sunny and had a great view of the mountains and the sheep next door. It was very clean, and had all the usual items, including tea, coffee, soap, shampoo, hair dryer, etc. The artwork in the room was very tasteful and the beds were very comfy.
In terms of heating, cooling – there was a heat pump, HRV system, panel heaters, electric blankets and extra bedding in case needed. Cooking facilities had everything we needed to make breakfast / dinner. A French press is available in the room. The Samsung SmartTV in the cottage had Netflix. The owners were very friendly and accommodating, check-in was quick and easy. SH1 is close to the complex, but there is very little traffic noise. The units are double-glazed so this dampens noise. There is a laundry on site, and a large common grass space with a kids playground and flying fox.
The fish and chips from Crazy J’s (about 50m away from the entrance) is highly recommended. Also, there is a very nice beach walk / bike ride in the dunes which is very close by.

We only stayed for one night (unfortunately), would have loved to stay longer. The cottage was so inviting, so well equipped, two really comfy queen beds, heated towel rails, great shower, well stocked kitchen with high quality appliances, good sized frig/freezer, comfy couch, Netflix, heat pump, dining table, and best of all the lovely private deck, looking out to the most amazing mountains (plus the little four-legged woolly friends over the fence). The cottages are an absolute credit to the hosts, who obviously work so hard to keep the place looking immaculate. They gave us excellent guidance on what to do in the short time we were visiting. Hope to visit again next year.

We had an absolutely awesome stay here for 2 nights. The owner went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Our cottage was warm on arrival (heat pump was switched on prior). The cottages are imaculately clean (could not fault!) and private. Everything has been thought of - comfy beds, bathroom mirrors that do not steam up, good kitchen utensils, beautiful gardens to admire the stunning view... I could go on! Needless to say, we will be back!

I had to cancel my stay at Kaikoura Cottage Motels because of travel restrictions due to the coronavirus. Not only would they not refund me, the owner told me to, "man up," whatever that means. I worked with a number of different hotels, airlines, tour operators, and rental car agencies to get refunds because we couldn't travel. Kaikoura Cottage Motels was the only business that refused to give us a refund. And in the course of communicating with the owner, he was extraordinarily and unnecessarily rude. During challenging times like this, people show their true colors, and he has shown to be churlish and not deserving of future business.

We loved our stay at the cottages. They had everything we needed for our 3 night stay. The rural outlook was awesome. We loved sitting outside looking at the mountains, it was so relaxing. It was the best place for us to stay as so nice for us to come back to after a day out. Such lovely owners too.

Owners Rae and Darrell are just the loveliest couple and their cottages are wonderful. We only stayed one night but would happily have stayed longer. Warm and comfortable, the cottages have double glazing and all the features and amenities you could want. Definitely go back and definitely recommend!

We stayed here one night. Points to note is that it is on the outskirts of Kaikoura. It is not walking distance to restaurants or bars, and you would need a car to get to the town area some 3 km away.
It is situated next to a main highway and train tracks are nearby. We were woken at about 4pm by the train, and heavy trucks also woke us in the night.
The heater was pathetic. It was really noisey - rattled and turned off every 2 hours. There was a small fan heater as well but it was also too noisey to sleep with.
It is NOT a two bedroom unit. It is a one bedroom unit, with the main bed in an area off the lounge, an open plan arrangement with a half wall between. We had insufficient bedding with my daughter getting cold in the night (i don't let the children sleep with electric blankets on). I see in the info that more blankets can be obtained - but we didn't realise we'd need more until 3am in the morning.
I have never read such stern rules in a info kit - you will be charged for breakages (thats fine), odours left, any stains, carpet cleaning and the list goes on and on about all the charges you will be liable for. Seemed a bit over the top.
The view from the units was very nice and the landscaping was well done. But overall, we wouldn't go back. Its too far out of town, and too noisey.

Best beds ever! Warm welcome from Darryl who couldn't do enough for us. Zapped up to local supermarket (what a great selection) - very well appointed, cosy, comfortable and quiet motel.
Take a stroll on the gorgeous beach.

Great friendly service, lovely wee cabins that were nicely furnished, comfortable and clean!
The rooms had everything you needed to make a simple meal and they were easy to get to just outside of town! Good recommendations of things to do and places to eat in town
