Train carriage was clean, comfortable, plenty of heaters to keep carriage warm, well equipped to make breakfast/cook and quite funky with a lot of original features. Plenty of space for kids to kick a ball outside and visiting and feeding the animals twice a day was a winner for the kids. Kevin the host and him team were very friendly and accommodating. Our carriage had it's own bathroom and mini kitchen, some of the other accommodations had very funky well set out private kitchens just outside their doors in a shelter.

Had to give this place a go having already stayed in wine barrels and trains. They have done a brilliant job turning this into a decent place to stay and the cowboy theme runs throughout the wagon. Includes a toilet and a shower plus you have access to an outside kitchen as well as all the animals on site. Enjoy…….

Stayed here just for one night as part of a road trip with my wife's visiting parents.
We booked the cottage.
Kevin met us on arrival and showed us around, gave us a thorough tour of the cottage and surrounding pasture, and then made sure we had fresh milk, butter, jam, cereals, eggs and other bits and bobs.

The cottage was rustic and perfectly suited to the environment. It had everything we needed. Toys for the kids, a play house, sheep roaming the garden - they were in heaven (the kids I mean!).

The farm is about 5 minutes drive from Kaikoura so is a perfect base for the area. The views of the mountains are spectacular. Our kids enjoyed feeding the animals with the farm hands. As with some other reviews, the wifi was sketchy but to be quite honest I think there's far better things to be doing that logging on to the internet when you are in such a special place.

If you're looking for state of the art modern facilities, then you'd be better off elsewhere. Wacky Stays is not geared for that market - what you get instead is a hospitable welcome, comfortable accommodation, spectacular scenery, charming experiences, and for the kids a return to good old fashioned outdoor fun and games.

We will definitely stay here again the next time are in the area.

While the accommodation is certainly wacky and provides a unique lodging opportunity (fun animal feeding included in the booking), I would highly recommend staying elsewhere because of the rude host. We arrived late due to traffic and informed him (the host) about this beforehand and he was extremely rude when we checked in and charged us a hefty late fee at our checkout without mentioning it the night of. We kindly asked him to waive the $30 late check in fee and his response was a hard 'no'. He is not flexible whatsoever and should not be working in this industry. His attitude and strict check-in and check-out procedure made the experience difficult and unwelcoming. He charges $30 if you are even one minute late checking in or checking out. I usually do not write reviews but this was an extremely regrettable experience (especially for the price) and I do want others to make the same mistake of staying here and encountering such rude behavior by the host. ***Some advice to the host: be more flexible towards your travelers because you are in the service industry and making sure your guests have a positive overall experience is more valuable than looking for ways to charge us if we check out one minute late. Additional advice for the host: if you do not want to stay up for travelers checking in later than 9pm, maybe install a self-check in lockbox.

Response from Kevin Cole, Owner at Wacky Stays
Responded 3 Mar 2020
At this time of year, I work 12-14 hours a day, starting very early = seven days a week. Guests can check-in up to 9pm. Staff finish their work @ 4pm. I am physically and mentally not able to cope with extending my working days to stay up for late arrivals, but appreciate some guests 'really' want to stay in my unique accommodation (or their travel plans change), so I offer extended check-ins = subject to pre-booking, and an hourly charge. This is explained where ever I can on websites, in my booking contract, and within a three-day-prior pre-check-in information email. If guests haven't checked-in by 8pm, I also send a text or email to warn guests my check-in service is about to close. As a small family-run business, with just six buildings, I cannot justify night-time staff. My properties are unique and unusual = guests need to be introduced to their property at check-in. Plus, I want to provide a personal service, and be available to answer questions. In this instance, no one was rude. At check-in (10:30pm) everyone was tired and just wanted to go to bed. If you have a problem with the above, regretfully, I prefer you choose somewhere else. For everyone else, I look forward to meeting you, and welcoming you to your Wacky Stay in my unique accommodation.

I booked the teepee as a romantic getaway for me and my boyfriend though booking.com.

In some respects, it is a novel arrangement; the teepee is cute despite some rather lacklustre decor and as a massive animal lover, I’m almost not too bothered by the sheep bleating away at 0345 this morning because they had managed to get into the teepee paddock. Even the rooster at 0400 and perpetual bleeping from either a reversing lorry or piece of farm equipment at 0600 wasn’t too painful nor the loaf of white packet bread for our “continental breakfast”.

However. A host who despite three missed calls and a voice message never had the courtesy to reply, a host whose manner was fairly aggressive, a host who spoke over me and did the adorable middle aged male phenomenon of talking to my boyfriend instead of me, despite it being my name on the booking, my name on the credit card and my name on the voice message is why this accommodation gets two stars and a definite “avoid” stamp.

We like finding accommodation that is a little bit different and this ticked the box. The first impression as we drove in was a little underwhelming, but we quickly loved it.
The yurt was nice and clean inside and nicely decorated, simple but unique. I liked that it kept the modern amenities to a minimum, with no TV and minimal power. The indoor lighting was very cool and the natural lighting through the top dome. The fresh eggs as part of the breakfast was nice.
We loved the outdoor kitchen, which we had nice weather for. It only has gas hob and BBQ so choose your recopies carefully. Very well made and rustic. The bathroom facilities were also good. No flash but definitely glamping.
The farm staff were very friendly and helpful with showing us around the animals at feeding time. The kids loved it.
I would recommend for families who want a unique but back to basics experience. We would go back again.

Stayed here with my wife and 6 year old son. We were greeted by the owner who has restored this train carriage and he has done a great job. Bunks on one end and master on the other. My boy loved it. Hand basin in the bathroom was a bit too small and I had to basically squash my head into the corner of the room when doing teeth brushing etc. Also had to close the door to the bathroom to get into the fridge. Was a bit dusty under the couch and it didn't look like it had been vacuumed under. The carriage really needed a surface spray for spiders as it looked scruffy from the outside with cobwebs everywhere and we had cobwebs inside on my boys lamp and on the ceiling in our bedroom. We were shown the emergency doors to get out but I found out in the morning that the children's room was latched from the outside so would have been hopeless if you needed to get out so that needs to be amended asap. There was a fan inside but it wouldn't be sufficient on a super hot day. All the same, it was a different experience but a bit cramped. Couldn't watch t.v either as the freeview player was away for repair and we weren't prepared to hire a movie off the owner at $10 a piece (refundable)

Had a fabulous two nights in the beautifully restored train carriage. The attention to detail was remarkable. Yes, it's a bit squishy in some areas (it's a train carriage!) but waking up to the view of the sun reflecting off the Mountain from you pillow was really special.
It was a really relaxing location and a lovely setting to hang out in, feed the animals and cook dinner on the BBQ or pizza oven. Staff were lovely, everything was spotlessly clean instead and breakfast options were great.
Highly recommend for someone different to stay - fun and quirky especially compared with sterile hotels.

My 10 year old son and I spent a fantastic day and night at Wacky Stays in Kaikoura staying in the Teepee. The Teepee was very comfortable and we loved cooking our pizza in the outdoor pizza oven and eating freshly laid eggs on camp toast in the morning. I appreciated the excellent plunger coffee too! My son loved feeding the animals and the staff clearly loved chatting about the animals they look after. In addition to the Llamas and Alpacas, our neighbours in the adjoining paddock were a pair of Kunekune pigs Hank and Marmalade. I would highly recommend the Llama trek, we only had time for the 1hr intro but we will be back to do the half day trek soon!

I so loved this place & can't believe a few of the negative reviews! Why didn't those people go to a Disneyland hotel for some make believe? It is different but was everything I looked forward to. We chose the Covered Wagon. It looks out on a field of grazing llamas & a range of scenic mountains. We sat and watched them from the small couch & from our bed in the early morning! It was very clean with all modern amenities but allowed us to feel as if we had gone back in time. Kevin and the staff couldn't have been more helpful & friendly. They were energetic, enthusiastic & encouraging too as we joined them to feed the animals. Plus they were fun & ready to answer all our questions. We also did the trek with llamas & that was a highlight. Kevin gave us so much information about llamas & the natural surroundings as we walked. I never realized just how beautiful & sensitive to humans llamas are! Yes, there are roosters that crow, & probably tractors. (We didn't hear either) but farm life starts early, so if it’s a late sleep in you want, try a Marriott and put the “Do Not Disturb” card on the door. This is a place where guests can step into another era or culture with as much authenticity as possible. I'm 76 & was very comfortable. I'd return tomorrow & I'll remember it for the rest of my life. I will also remember the soulful, knowing eyes of those llamas. SO grateful to have had this experience and for Kevin's work and insight in bringing this place to life for people like me.
