Had a fabulous two nights in the beautifully restored train carriage. The attention to detail was remarkable. Yes, it's a bit squishy in some areas (it's a train carriage!) but waking up to the view of the sun reflecting off the Mountain from you pillow was really special. It was a really relaxing location and a lovely setting to hang out in, feed the animals and cook dinner on the BBQ or pizza oven. Staff were lovely, everything was spotlessly clean instead and breakfast options were great. Highly recommend for someone different to stay - fun and quirky especially compared with sterile hotels.
Stayed here with my wife and 6 year old son. We were greeted by the owner who has restored this train carriage and he has done a great job. Bunks on one end and master on the other. My boy loved it. Hand basin in the bathroom was a bit too small and I had to basically squash my head into the corner of the room when doing teeth brushing etc. Also had to close the door to the bathroom to get into the fridge. Was a bit dusty under the couch and it didn't look like it had been vacuumed under. The carriage really needed a surface spray for spiders as it looked scruffy from the outside with cobwebs everywhere and we had cobwebs inside on my boys lamp and on the ceiling in our bedroom. We were shown the emergency doors to get out but I found out in the morning that the children's room was latched from the outside so would have been hopeless if you needed to get out so that needs to be amended asap. There was a fan inside but it wouldn't be sufficient on a super hot day. All the same, it was a different experience but a bit cramped. Couldn't watch t.v either as the freeview player was away for repair and we weren't prepared to hire a movie off the owner at $10 a piece (refundable)…
My 10 year old son and I spent a fantastic day and night at Wacky Stays in Kaikoura staying in the Teepee. The Teepee was very comfortable and we loved cooking our pizza in the outdoor pizza oven and eating freshly laid eggs on camp toast in the morning. I appreciated the excellent plunger coffee too! My son loved feeding the animals and the staff clearly loved chatting about the animals they look after. In addition to the Llamas and Alpacas, our neighbours in the adjoining paddock were a pair of Kunekune pigs Hank and Marmalade. I would highly recommend the Llama trek, we only had time for the 1hr intro but we will be back to do the half day trek soon!
The host who met us on arrival was, like the fictional Basil Fawlty, both English and wholly unsuited to dealing with the paying public. His introduction to the property involved telling us what we couldn’t do or must do. He falsely accused us of leaving a gate open 3 times, when others, including different guests, had also been responsible for this sin (none of his animals were even in field at the time, so the risk of escape was zero). He informed us that he would not permit us to entertain other family members at the property, without giving any reason. He made us feel very uncomfortable and gave the distinct impression that he was looking for an excuse to throw us out, despite us having some nothing wrong. We chose to spend as little time at the property as we could, as a consequence of how unpleasant his attitude towards us was. Not recommended. …
You definitely won't forget this place - so unique and so well thought through! There are three very unique accommodation types. We stayed in the converted bedford truck which was very well kitted out but could also use the shared kitchen space outside of which there was both a BBQ and pizza oven. For such a small space, we weren't expecting much from the shower but it was great! Everything was very well designed. If you love farm animals then joining in the animal feeding is a must and adds to the experience. This is drivable distance from the main centre so would recommend staying and making the most of the facilities. Thanks Kevin and the staff at the farm.
