The Clearwater Motel is perfectly located on the Esplanade - the beach road of Kaikoura. If you are lucky you get one of the two sea-view apartments. We were fortunate as the price was under 90NZ$ - which was by far the best value for money we could find on the sea view side. There is a hostel charging 30NZ$ / pax in a dorm on the main road (west end)! Here you get a decent apartment with kitchen, verandah, flat screen, queen size and a great view. Everything clean and partly newly renovated.
Mr.Thompson (manager) is a friendly and helpful man who gave us info about where to look for the seal colony. If you are going for a spa treatment atmosphere you should head for a 300NZ$ plus room somewhere else - but if you are looking for good value for money this is definitely the best choice!
Spacious. Clean. Perfectly located. Resonably priced. Believe me... Watching whales and swimming with dolphins will make sure you get rid of your bucks faster than you wish anyway.

Amongst the swarm of motels on the beach strip at esplanade in the Kaikoura peninsula, the best thing about the motel is the price.$110 for a double occupancy unit during the christmas season was a bargain.
Units are old yet spacious. Interiors are cosmetically maintained with a bad insulation a probable turn off during cold nights. The kitchenette is spacious but a hot plate is badly missed.

A cozy portico with seating provides for enjoying the beach during the evenings.
Overall the place is recommended for a night's stay owing to the prices and the location.

My husband I travelled through out the South Island during our holiday and stayed at many motels during the months of January 2011.
Our stay in Kaikoura was very enjoyable. There was much to do and see during our stay there. We stayed at the Clearwater Motels for 2 nights and we really did enjoy our stay at this motel. The accommodation was very comfortable and clean. The beds were great as this motel was not modern but the price was reasonable considering we had a view of the Ocean and mountains from our room.We had several meals at the Seafood BBQ which is near the Seal colony which were really cheap and also fresh. If you enjoy Seafood then this is the place to eat in Kaikoura.

Kaikoura has a gorgeous beach area and this motel is one of the many along the beach. \Spectacular to sit and watch the water - just don't stay in The Clearwater. It's so run down it isn't funny. We have been in motels across both islands for 4 weeks now and this was the worst by far. The shower was rotting away, there was no coffee or tea pot, no hair dryer and they didn't give us milk like ALL the other places have done. It smelled of mold and the plumbing drains and walls are so poor that you hear every thing from the unit beside you as they pee and whatever. And we paid $123 for this dump. We booked on line so couldn't back out when we saw the place. The man who runs the place is very nice but I think he knows he's robbing people asking this kind of money for such a piece of crap. There are many new motels along this strip so wait until you are there and find one you like. Drive past the wharf and aquarium (don't go in - there is nothing in it) and past the trailers selling awful sea food around the corner to the little park. There are seals all over the rocks. Walk out on the flat rocks but watch the tides. They come in and trap you out on the rocks with not way back if you aren't careful. If you want a taste of great crayfish from a trailer, drive a few kms north of town to Nin's Bin.

We booked to stay at this motel and drove past it. We couldn't bring ourselves to stay in such a shocking motel. My first thought was if I wanted to stay in a world war II bomb shelter I would sort consultation from the Army for places to stay. The internet had a nice photo showing the place. Lesson learnt never believe anything you see on web sites.
I actually would have preferred to stay in the car and I own a mini. Now what is worse is I rang to cancel and they still want the full night payment. This has put me off the town of Kaikoura.
MY ADVICE IS NEVER STAY AT CLEARWATER MOTEL KAIKOURA

We booked in for 2 nights at the beginning of Jan, 3 adults & 3 teenagers. We had a 2 bedroom, self contained unit right opposite the beach and made ourselves at home straight away. Terry & Bon, our wonderful hosts couldn't help us enough, they even moved another single bed into the unit so that only 1 had to sleep on the sofa lounge. There was no milk in the fridge but we asked if we could have some and Bon provided a full bottle straight away. They gave us free internet, so that kept the teenagers happy.

The unit was clean, tidy and plenty roomy enough for all of us. It was great value for money and the view was awesome. We enjoyed ourselves that much we changed our plans and booked for another night. It's an easy walk to The Pier Hotel which has beautiful meals. Close to the seal colony & the crayfish & takeaway caravans and it's not too far from town

Yes the Clearwater is dated but it is classic and was very clean and comfortable. If you spend all your time in the room and are nit picky then it's not for you but if you go to Kaikoura to relax, get out and about, see the sights and take in the wonderful view, which is what I do on holiday, then trust me the Clearwater Motel is perfect!!

Thank you Terry & Bon for a lovely 3 days, anything we asked for, you provided and couldn't do enough for us. Will definitely come back and stay!!!

If you are into a motels that have WiFi, 40+ channels of SkyTV, hottubs, then go stay there!!!... The Clearwater is like a favourite pair of jeans or shoes, that no matter how tatty they appear, you feel good in them, it is a classic 1950's bohemian feeling New Zealand motel... yeah sure, the garden needs a tidy up, and first impression you think it is a soviet style gulag, but the old saying is, don't judge a book by it's cover and this is an old NZ book from way back, rustic charm is the word a real estate person would use, functional is another that springs to mind, it has Freeveiw TV (with SBS as well), shower is damned hot! (40 gallon hot water cylinder for those who like 1 hour showers), the usual kettle, toaster, fridge, the owners Roy and Bon are not into blowing hot air, they are laid back (not don't give a toss) but laid back in way where they treat you for you and not what you do people, Bon has the units spotless, you won't catch anything nasty in the place, unless you picked up abit at a local pub for alittle slap and tickle, location spoton !, if you are staying in unit 3, you have one of the best views of Kaikoura, walking distance to the Commercial Hotel (Brighton St), stroll down to the swimming pool turn right out the gate, walk for 3 minutes and you will fall into the pool, basically it is slap bang in the centre of Kaikoura. This motel is not for people who whinge, it is catering for the piece of the market that is sadly forgotten in this day, it screams low cost, clean, safe for target market mum and dad with 2 kids, dad making 38k, driving a Toyota station wagon, who is on stuggle street, but not flat broke, and the backpacker on a self drive, yes pictures can be decieving, but it is a place where I will stay again, and I would say alot of other Kiwis would stay at, for that economical, back to basics, roof over your head..... if you are yearning to just have a classic holiday like you did when you were a child, well the Clearwater is it...... enjoy.... PS leave your laptop, cellphone at home ok....trust me

Initially attracted to this Motel via www.ratestogo.com, based on location, price and a photo which turned out to be a little deceptive in the way it was cropped.

On arriving at the Motel, our reaction was to continue driving and look for other options. This is an aged hodge podge of buildings masquerading as a motel complex. It is more a collection of functional seaside batches on a very open section, than a motel.

As we had booked for 2 nights we returned for an inspection and were shown studio and double units. unrepaired broken windows were evident along with superficial attempts to freshen the place up by painting over aging wallpaper.

The male proprietor was initially welcoming, but was clearly expecting our reaction. His insistance that the motel standard was up to a 2 star rating is a cop out for laziness and a desire to get away with what he can with regards to unsuspecting travelers.

We refused to stay at the cost of one nights accomodation. Shortly after we departed we were interested to see one of the rooms offered to us, being advertised on roadside signage at a cheaper rate.

The Clearwater Motel is an embarrassment to the Kaikoura community and to the New Zealand tourisim industry.

DEFINITE NO GO.

This motel had a sign on the road: 75 $ for a double room with beachview. We decide to book this room immediatly. Its a bit old fashioned, but the owners gave a good service. This motel with an excellent beach view is much cheaper than different other ones on the same boulevard. We had a nice stay for one night for a reasonable price! The motel nees to be renovated, but it was a smooth stay!

me and my husband were visiting kaikoura as our first destination while on our trip to the south island...its one of the most beautiful places where you enjoy the different moods of the sea....so many varied colours of water depending on the weather!
we were staying at clear water motels for 2 nights.
Bob and Terry....the owners with their son Siam were the most wonderful people we met!
the motel is decent with the best location just across the sea....but the owners are fantastic!
we had some problem regarding our rental car......but Bob and Terry helped us out and its because of them that our trip went really well!
they took us to the whale watching site...dropped us there and also later came to pick us up....because we did not have a car then.......
also their son Siam showed us their vegetable garden and was a very friendly kid!
so we would like to thank Bob ,Terry ,Siam and also Mike who made this trip a great success! Mike was a great company and guide on our tour!
We are writing this review for specially thanking Bob and Terry for their friendliness and warmth, helpfulness and hospitality
