We were a group of 9 that had their original accommodation cancel last minute and Dusky Lodge were very helpful and accommodated us, initially we had specific request for seperate rooms in the backpacker lodge which they accomodated but then advised they would put us in their 5 bedroom house separate to the backpackers lodge, which I had asked if it was available on my first contact and told it was not. The lady on the phone over the 2 days of organising was fantastic . Upon arrival we were advised that we were only able to use 4 of the 5 bedrooms and the 5th was locked. No reason why we assumed it was a storage room. When one of us who arrived and hadn't heard this message tried the door it opened, in the room was two bunks made up with sheets and towels , to the side were some beds and mattresses on their sides, as one of our party was sick with the flu it was felt that he should be in this room so he didn't disturb others or pass on his bugs. Using a couple of the matresses and the sheets from the top bunk a bed was made up for his wife. Later the following day the male manager called quite irate that we had used the room when we were told specifically not too , we told him the room was unlocked and beds made up and given the situation felt it would be ok, he denied the beds were made up and said the other beds were broken and he had seen through the window what we had done and was not happy. I said we would move out-of the room if it was that big a problem, he said no stay there but I am charging you $75 extra for cleaning, unreal. So speaking of cleaning, while we are very grateful they got us all in once space the place was not clean, the kitchen was dirty, the microwave had grease from the cooker on the outside, one of the oven elements had lost a leg and a pot of water when placed on it tipped out, fortunately it wasn't boiling water. So sadly because of the extra charge and attitude of the manager we likely will not stay again or recommend.

Hi Tania & party, Thank you for your review and I'm sorry that your experience did not match your expectations. Your last minute booking made was for a 6-bed dorm, 1 double room and 1 twin room at our main property Dusky Lodge. When we heard about your request to have a private space, we decided to go above and beyond and upgrade your entire group of 9 to our private house. The house can sleep 15 and instead of squeezing in other guests to maximize profit, we chose to spread your party into 4 of the 5 rooms in the house, an improvement in itself from a 6 bed dormitory. This upgrade to the house was done for free, saving your group over $400 + during a public holiday weekend when every accommodation in Kaikoura was fully booked. We had just 1 condition, only use the rooms that were allocated to your group. This clearly was not met, despite your group acknowledging that request. When our duty manager checked you in, she gave your group a private tour of the house. She pointed out the closed room and said it was unavailable. She also personally showed you all 4 rooms that were available for your usage. In fact, we even turned the heaters and lights to those 4 rooms on and gave you a check in sheet that had access codes to only the available rooms. Regardless of what the condition of the 5th room was, that door was closed and should not have been accessed. Apart from locking the door in future, I do not know how much clearer we could have been about not gaining access to that spare room. Your group even took the liberty to rearrange the furniture, remove art work and slept on beds that were broken, perhaps causing further damage to the frame. The $75 fee was for usage of the extra room + cleaning. In this Covid-19 environment we take our cleanliness seriously and we disinfect everything in the room including the walls and exposed surfaces. It is not as simple as just vacuuming and changing the sheets for the next guest as your group suggested. I feel that $75 is more than a fair price for usage of a spare room over a 3 night public holiday stay. Considering that you already saved $400+ with a free upgrade from dormitory rooms to a private house with free coffee/tea etc.. We wish that as fellow Kiwi's you'd understand how hard it is for a small local business to survive during a post Covid-19 environment and not take advantage of our generosity. As a team and business, we strive to go above and beyond what is necessary and want all our guests to have an amazing stay despite working with limited resources and manpower. We simply ask that guests follow the rules we have for our property. I am available to discuss this matter further if you would like, and can be reached via email. Warm regards, Russell General Manager Ps: Perhaps it is not the wisest to travel around the country during a pandemic visiting tourist destinations while knowingly sick with the flu.

Stayed here for one night as part of the Stray tour. We were in a 12 bed dorm but there were only 6 of us so was quite spacious (would have been a bit of a squeeze with our bags if it had been full). The room was en-suite - 1 toilet, 1 shower and 1 combined toilet/shower. There are 2 big kitchens and plenty of space to sit and chill outside the rooms. The hostel is about a 10 min walk into the centre of town but has a good bakery right next door and a supermarket 2 mins down the road.

Disappointing stay. Staff indifferent and almost rude during every interaction. Felt like they didn’t want us to be there and that they also did not want to be there. Rooms were spacious but not well maintained (wall hooks left on side, no handles on old drawers that were falling apart, stained bedsheets, etc - see pictures). Security is pretty much non-existent - only door that is locked is the front one. Lovely pool and spa although did not get the chance to use them as either they are not open or are always full of people who are not staying at the hostel. Staff member yelling at kids to get out of pool.
Plenty toilets and showers and relatively clean, beds were comfy and free wifi but would not recommend staying here. Expected more from a hostel that is part of the Backpacker Group.

Sorry you seemed to have bad interaction with staff we try and pride ourselves on being fun and attentive to all guests needs. We offer the pool to the wider community as the community is currently under construction after the earthquake and the kids have nowhere to swim. We allow them to use the pool only till 5pm as the guests need to have time to swim and enjoy the facilities without children running, yelling and diving in the pool. They are aware of this but always try and stay longer and it upsets many guests so we need to police it. Again sorry if you felt disappointed with your stay.

We had a group of 30 university students and two faculty stay here, and it was perfect for our needs. It is an easy walk to town from here, and there are some good options, such as a bakery next door, that are convenient for coffee and baked goods. Also, this is a very well-run place.

I stayed at Dusky Lodge Backpackers, Kaikoura for 7 nights. I can definitely recommend it as a very suitable Backpackers to stay at. I found the Staff to be friendly and helpful. They were also accommodating to a request I had. This was allowing me to swap a night's Accommodation from a Saturday night to a Monday night. I requested this on the Friday as an excellent weather forecast gave me the opportunity to do an overnight tramp and stay at a Doc Hut on the Saturday night.

I appreciated Dusky Lodge willingness to do this and clearly it was something they were able to do at that time. So my take from that is certainly they will assist Guests if they can, depending on availability and current demand.

The Communial Kitchen was a nice place to meet other travellers and it had a big flat screen TV (not something I was looking for) but obviously something many people look for. There were Movies and TV to watch, so this caters well for families other interested guests ie groups, couples, individual & friends.

The Kitchen/Dining Room/Lounge has a nice Fire, very cosy on a cold Winters night. I did notice though that it could have been better stocked with Kindling & smaller Wood to get it going easier.

Cheers

Hey Brendon, Cheers for the review, we appreciate the feedback and will take this on board to help better our facilities for the next guest. You are right that our team are willing to go above and beyond to ensure all our guests have the best stay possible. One simply has to get in touch with our front of house and we can arrange specific requests. In the meanwhile, we'll get George our 4 legged guest relations manager to help break down some of the larger chunks of wood into kindling. (= Safe travels Brendon, our team looks forward to having you back! Cheers, Team Dusky

The hostel is well located, only minutes walking to Kaikoura main centre. It has a big swimming pool, spa and sauna, which was super handy, not many hostels in New Zealand offers that! Inside is very spacious, with many communal areas and bbq facilities outside with great views of the valleys. Receptionists were super, specially Gabriel! 100% recommended!

First of all I rarely go out of my way to write a bad review. I regret staying at this Backpackers. Customer service is beyond shocking. I arrived shortly after reception closed. I was not welcomed or helped despite receptionist hovering. I found our room key. Which wasn't marked clearly. (it had my name and another one scratched of) We went off to have dinner after a long day's drive. It wasn't long before I received a call telling me to come back as I had taken wrong room key. We had to leave in the middle of our dinner. Only to discover that they had sorted the other guests with a new room. They admitted they had marked envelopes unclearly. Yet proceeded to ask if we would like to pay extra for the new room. (You think if customer service was good they just leave the 40 nzd difference) why? 1. It was their mistake. 2. I was offered no help when checking in. 3. They went into our room with our permission to find the booking sheet with name on it. 4. Our first night was ruined as we rushed back when no need.

The receptionist offered us a cheaper rate for the upgraded room. I was upset but accepted as he met us half way. Only to discover that they lied about prices, they gave us no discount. We checked prices on booking and their site.

I'm really disappointed with our experience. In hard times with covid, you'd expect places to be more welcoming and understanding.

Would they like to receive that treatment? The answer is no! Why do we have to pay the price for their unclear labelling. Worst part is I wonder why they needed to enter the room without permission? Perhaps to try fix their own mistake on the marked envelope? It's all a little too suspicious

Worst experience in hostel. I have worked in hostel before. I would never treat people like this.

I stayed at Dusky for work throughout the winter of 2021 up until the recent spring. Russell the manager was absolutely incredible.Proper legend. He went out of his way to help me, no request was ever too much and always made sure my time staying was to the utmost standard. All with a smile on his face. I work remotely and sometimes this spans time-zones, giving me strange hours. Russell was always so courteous to this fact and always made sure everything was ok with my work/life/staying schedule. The team he's put together are great; always friendly, happy to help and just to talk to in passing. All this with the uncertainty amid a pandemic. I cannot thank Russell enough.
Kitchen is spacious, very clean and always had a great atmosphere with the other guests passing through, so all of the above with absolutely great value, there is no shadow of a doubt that I will be returning to stay; business or leisure.

Hey Andrew, Wow! Thank you for the awesome review. It's been an absolute pleasure hosting yourself and both the team and I enjoy your company. Needless to say, I would not be able to offer the level of service without such a strong team standing beside me. The team spirit and work/life culture we developed supports this atmosphere and level of cleanliness. We've put a lot of love into this business to build this home-away-from-home feel and it puts a huge smile on our faces when we get amazing reviews like this. (= We are pleased that you had a great time staying with us and we look forward to hosting you many more times in the near future. Cheers for being awesome! (= Much love, Russ, George & Team Dusky
