The Sudima Kaikoura is frequently lauded for its inviting atmosphere and spotless conditions, offering modern and comfortable rooms with scenic views that guests appreciate. However, opinions are split on the value, with some feeling the cost, especially of the breakfast buffet and bar, undermines the otherwise quality stay.
Its prime location earns consistent praise, situated conveniently near local attractions. While many guests commend the friendly staff, service experiences have varied, with some noting room for improvement in housekeeping and staff attentiveness.

Detailed Reviews

The room, the bed, the shower, the shampoo/soaps, the TV, the tea/coffee facilities, - all 100% everything you want from a hotel room, the bar had very good beers on tap, and the buffet breakfast was extremely good. Its expensive but worth it.
However a couple of minor things - the extractor fan in the bathroom wasn't operational, the iron was so dirty I refused to use it on my clothes (& yes I could have asked for a clean one but we were rushing out the door for a diiner booking) and the 'heated' pool is not heated - apparently its only heated during the summer due to financial reasons.

The Sudima Kaikoura is a brand new hotel and there’s nothing here we would fault - a big, bright room, superb comfy bed and the best hotel bathroom we’ve seen in NZ. There’s a small fridge, pod coffee maker, and kettle in the room, as well as a large chrome cast TV. Location is pretty good, right among the tourist strip directly opposite the beach, approximately mid way between the town and the peninsula. You could walk to both, but would be better of driving to the car park at the end to start the peninsula walk, or back into town if you want to skip the hotel’s restaurant. Plenty of parking right outside the back door, and with a pool and gym onsite. If choosing the big corner rooms be aware they have no opening doors or windows, so, if that matters, select the pricier adjoining balcony rooms.

We stayed Sudima Hotel in Kaikōura one night at the Sudima Hotel in Kaikōura and really enjoyed the facilities. With a view across the road to the beach this hotel felt so special and dining in their feature restaurant, Hiku added to the experience. We tried the chicken, the potato & black truffle balls, then fish of the day and the slow cooked lamb shoulder (so soft) plus the orange cake and their tiramisu – YUM! Thank goodness the bed was so comfortable. Do stay here when you are next in Kaikōura.

This hotel is located on the Esplanade in Kaikoura, across the road from a stone beach.
On check in we received a quite cold but courteous greeting, A warm welcoming greeting would have been nicer. No help was offered with our luggage, but we did locate a trolley to get our luggage from our car, in the small free car park, to our room on the fourth floor.
Our room was a good size. As it was a corner room we enjoyed double aspect floor to ceiling windows. The room was far from functional, which we would describe as style over substance. For example there were five hooks located on the wall behind the door to hang clothes, no wardrobe. The height of two of these hooks was out of reach for anyone less than around 1.9m tall. The limited shelf storage was at a very low level which we found unusable.
The bathroom was a good size with a choice of shower heads, but more thought needed to have been given to the positioning of the controls, which we found inconveniently sited. Two stainless steel pins in the polished concrete wall was all the hanging space available for two bath towels, two hand towels and two bath robes. Completely inadequate. On check out I raised these issues and was told that the lack of towel rails in the bathroom had been identified by previous guests and was something that was going to be rectified.
Sachets of instant coffee were all that was available. Unlike other hotels who, as standard, provide coffee machines of a coffee pot.
We stayed for 4 nights and it appeared the bedding was not changed throughout our stay. We know this as a mascara stain was made on a pillow case on our first night and it was still there on our fourth night.
We have already written a separate review about our dinner dining experience in the hotels Hiku restaurant. However breakfast was reasonable but choices were limited. The only fruit available was that which had been cut up and placed in a bowl. Bananas were noticeably absent as was any fish.
For the rates charged we did not feel we received good value for money.
Having now experienced the Sudima Service Model, we would not return to this hotel and are unlikely to use any other hotels in this group.

I'd like to give this hotel a really good review, but.......the hotel itself is very nice, the rooms spacious, comfortable, everything works, it is a handsome property, good location, breakfast buffet is standard but adequate, overall high cleanliness standards. But there is no feeling, very little guest engagement, and rigid policies.
A first night dinner in the restaurant was good food, no service. Entree was served before appetizer, dishes weren't cleared, and I had to leave the table to find someone to get a desert menu. Even after that, no one came to table to take a desert order. If you are going to brand your restaurant " Classic, Rustic, Elevated", then the service needs to be "elevated" to a better level.
When I left my key card in the room and asked for help from the reception, I was scolded and told the hotel doesn't have enough key cards, so take better care of my key!
Finally, a complete lack of flexibility or even willingness to listen when a late check out was requested was beyond understanding. I had just spent three nights in the hotel, it was running 25% occupancy ( informed by the reception ) and, I had forward bookings at the Sudima Christchurch and Sudima Auckland for the next two nights. I was flat out told that Policy does not allow for late check outs anytime occupancy is over 10%. There was no understanding that I was moving to another Sudima Hotel and absolutely no flexibility.
A little more wait person attention during dinner, a response life "let me make you a new key, but please return it once you get your keys from your room", and some flexibility when a guest, even a tourist, is telling you I am loyal to your hotel company during this visit, and this hotel can "elevate" to a better rating.
More guest attention recommended ( and maybe make the corporate policies more guest friendly and flexible )
Kaikouri is a special place, better guest service and engagement can make the Sudima Kaikoura the same.
Note : the hotel duty manager ( Joseph ) made a good attempt to recover the situation at check out, and once engaged, was very warm and kind. Breakfast service from Jasmine was also warm, friendly and attentive.

The hotel itself is nice. Location is right on the water so lovely scenery. However, I would stay away from the breakfast buffet. Even though they display a breakfast menu, they will not serve you that if they are offering the buffet. The food on the buffet was some of the most tasteless food I have ever eaten. Even the pastries were off, having almost a smoked flavor. Bizarre! Need to up their game a bit in this area if they are stating a 4+ star hotel.

Very modern hotel. Really great rooms with plenty of power sockets and plenty space for cases. Large comfortable beds. Quiet room - we rather liked the slight sound of the waves. Service was great. Unlike other reviews we had very good experience in the restaurant - maybe service has been improved recently. We found it to be higher quality and better value for dinner compared to other higher end dining in Kaikoura. We did not have breakfast - much better value across the road at Dolphin encounter cafe.

The staff here were the most friendly and helpful we have encountered on our 5 weeks in Australia and NZ. We had our room changed to one with a great view of the snow tipped mountains without any quibble and good advise on best sights. The pool proved a lovely oasis on a hot afternoon after lots of walking. Town and its range of restaurants can be reached by a 10 minute flat walk and the Pier Hotel a similar distance the opposite way. We walked 30 minutes further than the Pier and found a good spot from seal watching. The BBQ lunch along this coastal walk is a treat too!

We stayed at the Sudima on New Years Eve as a treat to ourselves. On arrrival at 2.15pm our room was not ready. We had to wait in the lounge until about 3.30pm. Our room was a corner, sea view room which I must say was spotlessly clean. The bed was extremely comfy but, for the high price we paid for this room, not value for money. No wine glasses, no biscuits, no bottled water, no milk for tea, no coffee plunger, wardrobe was a few hooks on the wall behind the door. We were unable to dine in the restaurant as it was fully booked so we were encouraged to have room service. The fish and chips we had was lovey but could have been a lot hotter - and almost half a lettuce and little else as a garnish. Breakfast was unremarkable but adequate.
However on the positive side ALL the staff were amazing and so very pleasant and helpful whilst working under some degree of pressure - we were not the only people waiting for their room to become available and some of those people were not as patient and accommodating as us.
For $600+ for room, meal and breakfast this was CERTAINLY not value for money. Please please look at your pricing structure and what you provide within that. It’s such a shame to have to give this hotel not such a good review when it has the potential to be very special. And look after your staff - they are special.
