The Sudima Kaikoura is a brand new hotel and there’s nothing here we would fault - a big, bright room, superb comfy bed and the best hotel bathroom we’ve seen in NZ. There’s a small fridge, pod coffee maker, and kettle in the room, as well as a large chrome cast TV. Location is pretty good, right among the tourist strip directly opposite the beach, approximately mid way between the town and the peninsula. You could walk to both, but would be better of driving to the car park at the end to start the peninsula walk, or back into town if you want to skip the hotel’s restaurant. Plenty of parking right outside the back door, and with a pool and gym onsite. If choosing the big corner rooms be aware they have no opening doors or windows, so, if that matters, select the pricier adjoining balcony rooms.

Beautiful facility, spotlessly clean rooms and very accommodating staff. On site parking is on a 'first in' basis and EV charging is available. The restaurant & bar feel slightly utilitarian but are light and clean with lovely ocean views. We would happily stay here again.

We stayed at the Sudima on New Years Eve as a treat to ourselves. On arrrival at 2.15pm our room was not ready. We had to wait in the lounge until about 3.30pm. Our room was a corner, sea view room which I must say was spotlessly clean. The bed was extremely comfy but, for the high price we paid for this room, not value for money. No wine glasses, no biscuits, no bottled water, no milk for tea, no coffee plunger, wardrobe was a few hooks on the wall behind the door. We were unable to dine in the restaurant as it was fully booked so we were encouraged to have room service. The fish and chips we had was lovey but could have been a lot hotter - and almost half a lettuce and little else as a garnish. Breakfast was unremarkable but adequate.
However on the positive side ALL the staff were amazing and so very pleasant and helpful whilst working under some degree of pressure - we were not the only people waiting for their room to become available and some of those people were not as patient and accommodating as us.
For $600+ for room, meal and breakfast this was CERTAINLY not value for money. Please please look at your pricing structure and what you provide within that. It’s such a shame to have to give this hotel not such a good review when it has the potential to be very special. And look after your staff - they are special.

Dear Pamela P Thank you for your feedback, firstly my apologies for the late access to your room. To clarify the amenities in the room we do not supply wine glasses, biscuits, coffee plunger and bottled water, milk should have been in your fridge, I have spoken to our housekeeper re the checking process for our amenities. In regard to the wardrobe not being in the room we hope to have this rectified shortly as there has been a supply issue. I have passed your comments to our Head chef & Restaurant Manager re your dining experience in Hiku & room service. Thank you for acknowledging the team as that is much appreciated. My sincerer apologies that we did not meet your expectations on this occasion.

A beautiful hotel, but too much attention has been paid to the appearance and none to what the customers expect.

We arrived early so we decided to go for a walk until check in time. At check in time we returned to find our room still wasn’t ready because of staff shortages.

When we got to our room we found that there were no wardrobes and there was nowhere to hang clothes except 2 small metal bars on the bathroom wall. There were no coat hangers either! On inspection we found there was no bottled water, no wine glasses and no teatowel to dry the cups and glasses.

This is supposedly a 4.5 star hotel.

We ate in the restaurant, ordering lamb and a steak. You could order 2 sides with each meal. The meals came, mine minus the mushrooms. My husband said his was steak, not the lamb he had ordered. He said the steak was good so we decided not to complain. However, the waiter came over and checked what we had ordered, realising he had made a mistake. I think this could be the same waiter mentioned in an earlier review, who made a mistake with the order, and told the couple he didn’t want to go back to the kitchen and tell them he had made another mistake.
We later mentioned the incident to reception and we received a discount.

Breakfast the following day was poor. Scrambled eggs swimming in liquid and horrible fatty streaky bacon, which was hard and difficult to chew.

We received a note under the door saying they couldn’t clean the rooms because the hotel was fully booked!! We couldn’t get a table for dinner and decided to eat in town.

They had run out of $2 coins which were needed to use the laundry.

The staff were under considerable pressure but they did their best and I have to say they were all excellent.

I think management need to get a grip of these issues. There seems to be a lack of pre-planning.

I definitely wouldn’t stay here again. Fawlty Towers comes to mind.

This hotel is located on the Esplanade in Kaikoura, across the road from a stone beach.
On check in we received a quite cold but courteous greeting, A warm welcoming greeting would have been nicer. No help was offered with our luggage, but we did locate a trolley to get our luggage from our car, in the small free car park, to our room on the fourth floor.
Our room was a good size. As it was a corner room we enjoyed double aspect floor to ceiling windows. The room was far from functional, which we would describe as style over substance. For example there were five hooks located on the wall behind the door to hang clothes, no wardrobe. The height of two of these hooks was out of reach for anyone less than around 1.9m tall. The limited shelf storage was at a very low level which we found unusable.
The bathroom was a good size with a choice of shower heads, but more thought needed to have been given to the positioning of the controls, which we found inconveniently sited. Two stainless steel pins in the polished concrete wall was all the hanging space available for two bath towels, two hand towels and two bath robes. Completely inadequate. On check out I raised these issues and was told that the lack of towel rails in the bathroom had been identified by previous guests and was something that was going to be rectified.
Sachets of instant coffee were all that was available. Unlike other hotels who, as standard, provide coffee machines of a coffee pot.
We stayed for 4 nights and it appeared the bedding was not changed throughout our stay. We know this as a mascara stain was made on a pillow case on our first night and it was still there on our fourth night.
We have already written a separate review about our dinner dining experience in the hotels Hiku restaurant. However breakfast was reasonable but choices were limited. The only fruit available was that which had been cut up and placed in a bowl. Bananas were noticeably absent as was any fish.
For the rates charged we did not feel we received good value for money.
Having now experienced the Sudima Service Model, we would not return to this hotel and are unlikely to use any other hotels in this group.

The hotel is very nice and seems new, however I was extremely disappointed with my stay due to the service. The morning following my first night in the hotel, I bent down to pickup something that fell, and I found a used condom under the best from a previous guest. I informed the front desk of what I found and the man behind the desk didn’t seem at all concerned about it and had no urgency to this matter- he simply asked what my room number was and said that the cleaning staff usually get to that area around 2pm. I mentioned how gross it was and asked it to be dealt with sooner, he assured me it would. Upon return from my day I checked and still found the used condom there. Again heading down to the desk, I told another lady behind the counter of the problem. She seemed quite concerned with the matter, apologized, and told me someone will come immediately to clean it. I left again for dinner and the evening, came back to STILL find it there. We checked out the next morning. All this is say I’m very disappointed and quite frankly grossed out with my stay.

Very modern hotel. Really great rooms with plenty of power sockets and plenty space for cases. Large comfortable beds. Quiet room - we rather liked the slight sound of the waves. Service was great. Unlike other reviews we had very good experience in the restaurant - maybe service has been improved recently. We found it to be higher quality and better value for dinner compared to other higher end dining in Kaikoura. We did not have breakfast - much better value across the road at Dolphin encounter cafe.

The bizarre decision to have all of the signs in the Hotel in Maori astounded me. Firstly, next to no one visiting can read Maori. The staff dress code seemed to be white T-shirts and Adidas track pants. The Prime TV option on the TV wasn't working. No wine Glasses in the room. The phone in the room wasn't working so couldn't order room service without calling in from outside using a cellphone. The only way to view the menu was through a very clever App off the TV (Assuming you'd turned it on to see the QR code linking you to it ) Then asked to sign up for the App. Why not a simple compendium like anywhere else?? When I called to say I couldn't view the menu I was told to come down to reception to order room service breakfast. Arrived at 3.30 to start our holiday to be told it would be a 45-minute wait while our room was prepared. There was a wet floor area in the bar after staff had cleaned up a spill, and my partner nearly slip over on it. After advising staff, the attitude was for us to be more careful. Bit hard when you can't see the wet area! Could not fit a wine bottle in the fridge door. We couldn't eat at the restaurant for dinner as it was booked out, that was 2 weeks before we arrived. 1000m walk each way to the nearest restaurant and back. Not acceptable.

New modern hotel with a mainly neutral colour scheme. Reasonable amount of parking on site, or plenty along the Esplanade. Rooms average size. We went as a group so we had no choice, many of us ended up in rooms with twin beds, they are very comfortable but when you share your bed with your spouse, this wasn't expected nor enjoyed. No electric blankets. It's the middle of winter. I did phone reception 3 times over a couple of issues but the calls were never answered. The rooms heat pump is good, though no heating in the corridor and reception is rather cool too. Tea and coffee making facilities and a small fridge. Glasses, but no wine glasses in the rooms. Good sized bathroom and good shower. They only provide one hard club chair, seating for anyone else there's a round squab or the bed. Most of the signs are in Maori, only one in our large group could understand a few words. The large group of Asians also staying had no idea of what anything meant. Excellent staff. Helpful and friendly. Uniforms a little casual for this level of hotel. Catering for large groups can often be a challenge, the food offered suited all tastes and was very good. Good cocktail menu. I don't drink much, but really enjoy an Aussie Shiraz, but they only stock NZ wines. Just meant I drank water. The hotel is sited down the south end of the Esplanade, so a bit of a walk to the township. Good, modern, clean, quiet 4.5 star hotel.
