We liked everything. One very convenient feature was the long wide benches in each bedroom to place suitcases on. Two comfortable settees in the livingroom. The kitchen equipment was worthy of a Masterchef in training. Surrounding the lodge were beautiful garden beds. There would be something flowering in every season to look out on from the kitchen window. Lots of great places to see and go to in the town and nearby, including the closest one would ever get to a seal colony. The historic Pier Hotel was a great place for dinner but be sure to book to get a great window view. An absolute highlight was our wonderful hostess Liz and her huge pet pig Ginger !
Quirky and charming this was a fantastic location to base ourselves whilst enjoying the nature of Kaikoura. The owners were externally friendly and welcoming and the overall feel was relaxed and unfussy. The accommodation had a well fitted kitchen with everything you could need as well as comfortable bedrooms and a lovely space to sit outside. We would just highlight that the walk down to the town (about 20 mins) would be quite challenging for some but is just a 4 minute drive by car.
We were two couples on a weekend getaway and had the best time at Barnacle Bill's cottage accommodation. Liz warmly welcomed us and settled us in,before making some dinner recommendations. The cottage was bright, clean, spacious, well-appointed and with a great bathroom and bedroom facilities (noting that the second bedroom has two single beds). Had we wanted to cook, the kitchen was well set up for us to do so. If we had been staying longer we would have enjoyed making use of the lovely terrace with outdoor table and chairs and a simply beautiful view of the snow-capped Kaikoura ranges and the ocean. Thanks Liz - we absolutely loved staying at your place!
We stayed a couple of nights in Kaikoura. Barnacle Bills is situated just out of town on the high ground along Scarbourgh Rd. A steep pathway opposite the cottage takes you down towards the waterfront. The sun rises across the ocean into the front windows, so we sat on the veranda for our morning coffee and just admired the amazing view. All the amenities work well and the cottage (there is also the lodge next door) is lovely and snug. As it was winter, we had the two heaters in the living room on which is enough to warm the room up. The bathroom doesn't have a heater, but the water is hot. The beds have electric blankets which made for a comfortable night's sleep. There are washing machines, but no dryers (but washing lines in garden). We had a super friendly welcome, with…
Liz greeted us upon arrival, very warm and welcoming. She also advised us on all the local attractions and then took us for a tiki tour around Kaikoura. The facilities are top notch as well, everything you could want and more. The front of the cottage faces the sea and ice capped mountain range, golden and pink sunrises and sunsets. And also Ginger the pig was an added bonus.
