We stayed here for 2 nights and loved it. The location was absolutely outstanding and the pub is a hive of activity in the late afternoon. The view is spectacular. Rooms are old and dated but clean and comfortable. The balcony surrounding the rooms is a great place to sit and have your morning coffee. Wifi was terrible but no major. Basic breakfast tea/coffee, cereal and toast included and able to help yourself whenever you please. Restaurant was nice good honest pub food. I would definitely stay here again simply for the location.

This is a gem. You need a reservation for dinner but a drink in the garden with panoramic view of the bay is easy to get. Very obliging and friendly staff. Great food. Try the rosti. Desserts could be a little healthier.

The Pier Hotel is an old fashioned pub style Hotel that sticks by the old principals of providing great customer service.
Dinner was excellent so you need to book if you want to get in over a weekend. But it's worth the extra effort
The rooms are pub rooms with mostly shared amenities but the price reflects this. Great value for money.
Like the title says - a fantastic experience and a great weekend away.

Booked on a busy night. Arrived & waited 15 minutes for drink, & menu. Placed drinks order & meal order together. Had ordered entree & 2 mains, one without mushrooms. Drinks arrived, then main meal arrived 35 minutes later with NO ENTREE and also mushrooms on the plate ? Drinks were not refreshed or offered to be refreshed, which we would have and we would have ordered a dessert but with no service we decided to pay & leave . Went to counter THREE staff members walked past us with NO acknowledgement. We waited to pay finally got served , we were not asked were the meals okay or anything . What happened to good old fashioned service? Very disappointed in the service or lack of . The meal was however nice.

We stayed here knowing that it was a very basic old style hotel. The best rooms have either a private balcony with sea views or you can choose a room with a private ensuite. The lower priced rooms use a shared bathroom. There is a common shared lounge with TV and breakfast bar where you can help yourself to the continental breakfast. Unfortunately, however the lighting in the room was extremely poor, a totally inadequate eco fluorescent bulb. (actually that was also the case for the room we stayed in. This would be so easy to improve)
While the accommodation is pretty basic the restaurant in this hotel is actually extremely good.

We stayed on a thursday night - when we arrived the earliest we could get a table at the restaurant was 8:30pm so if you plan to eat there call ahead and book a table. The rooms are upstairs and are quite basic with shared toilet and bathroom facilities. There is a hand basin in the room. The decor is tired and in need of renovvation but that is reflected in the price.
That said we enjoyed our stay and sat out on the veranda upstairs with a bottle of wine while we waited to be seated in the restaurant. The outlook is fantastic up to the fishing pier and across the bay to the mountains - quite magical.
The restaurant was busy and good value with a nice choice of seafood. I would stay there again,

We were recommended here by our hosts and it was worth the walk, which is a lovely walk along the beach anyway. The pier is full of atmosphere and buzzing, so not a quiet romantic sort of placeb but great for people watching. The food was great, we both had lobster. You can also sit outside and watch the world/sea go by - if you can grab a seat on the verandah even better! They even offer a free taxi service back to town which means you dont have to drive, I'm hoping this catches on in the UK! It is very busy so book early.

We recently stayed a night at The Pier as a stopover en route to Christchurch. It is a lovely historic old building. We were running late due to a delayed ferry, however, the staff member was accommodating and it was not an issue. The room was very comfortable and clean. A free continental, help yourself, breakfast was provided which even included some gluten free options. Gorgeous views from our room and the balcony. Would not hesitate to stay again.

This is a must do when visiting Kaikoura.
The crayfish meal was outstanding, with upto 4 size options to choose from. The mussels were superb as were the whitebait.
We were advised to book in advance, so expectations were high.
Pleased to say we were not disappointed, the staff, venue, location and of course the kaimoana were all excellent and could not be faulted.
Keep up the great work and compliments to the whole team.
Will definitely be back when in the area next 🥰

On a clear day, this would be a magic spot with a great view. Unfortunately, the night we stayed it was cloudy and dull but lovely and quiet. The price was right but somehow my normally eagle eyes didn't notice that we'd have to go down the hall in the middle of the night to a shared bathroom. The breakfast setup was okay though one couple hogged the fridge with all their stuff. It's all a bit ragged and tired but the staff are all efficient and friendly. We had a nice meal in the restaurant and ordered fish & chips as we had seen in the room menu it was $29. We knew what we wanted so didn't check and were unpleasantly surprised that the fish, chips and salad were $42 not $29. The sticky date pudding dessert was great. My only real disappointment was that an alarm woke us at 3:30am and we were panicked and wondering what to do, as were several other hotel guests. After surmising that it wasn't a fire or a tsunami, I googled it and found out that it's not uncommon in NZ smallish towns that this is the way they alert all the local fire brigade volunteers for various emergencies. Had we known this (a little notice on the door would have been appreciated) we wouldn't have been so freaked! I know now but I suspect many tourists get caught out by this. I hope nobody has panic (or heart) attacks.
