We were lucky enough to have one of the two front side rooms with a balcony overlooking the sea and had an enjoyable day and night in a charming town which has recovered well from the earthquakes a few years ago. We had a complimentary glass of champagne on checking in, advice on restaurants, and found the room comfortable and well fitted out. Breakfast was served in the dining room overlooking the beach. A well restored old house which we enjoyed

If you are looking to spend some of those Covid free days you have been accumulating, this is the place for you.
The Hotel itself is located on the Esplanade right across the road from the Pacific Ocean and fully accessible.
Intrigued by the simple A frame Sandwich Board outside this beautiful Boutique Hotel offering Cocktails and Platters, and as the hour of the day required cocktails, we were welcomed into the secluded Al Fresco Courtyard Bar adjoining the Hotel, which also overlooked the Pacific Ocean.
If you don’t have a favourite cocktail in mind, the attentive staff will assist with everything from a simple Mimosa to your evening Espresso Martini, alternatively an impressive selection of beers and wines are available.
Now to the A frame Sandwich board. My wife and I were in the mood for platters, from this selection, and being in Kaikoura, we chose the Seafood Bouillabaisse.
OMG this Provençal fish stew was elevated to another level, beautifully balanced, an absolute joy to the palate, I asked the waitress if Chef had added fennel oil to the dish, without a blink of an eye, I was informed the fennel had been ground, she then went on to provide the other elements of the dish, clearly both the Chef & staff have respect for the product.
As the Courtyard at the time of writing was only open until sunset, if you are not actually walking along the Esplanade, phone ahead you will not be disappointed. Better still, stay a night or two either within the Historic two story main building or in the spacious rooms surrounding the inner courtyard and gardens.
Will we be back, absolutely .

We stayed at the Kaikoura Boutique Hotel in a historic waterfront room and what a total delight the entire experience proved to be! I wish we had booked an additional night - we will next time! After living in Aotearoa New Zealand for over a decade, this is easily the best hotel accommodation we have stayed in here ... and we've travelled alot. The room was excellent: spacious, warm on arrival, excellent bathroom, immaculately clean, view of the mountains to the left and ocean in front, great bed and an easy 15 minute walk to the Pier Hotel. We enjoyed great cocktails in the cosy bar and the breakfast downstairs is not to be missed and really great value: a lovely cafe atmosphere, excellent barista coffee and cut above bread, fruit, muesli, yoghurt and eggs. Add to this an incredibly warm welcome and farewell from Jen who looked after us throughout. This place is a cut above and we'll be back.

Response from Jen Barnes, Owner at Kaikoura Boutique Hotel
Responded 13 Aug 2023
Thanks for your beautiful and kind words. Love it when the hotel delivers the experience we strive for. Also, a big thanks for staying with us during Winter. Kaikoura is a seasonal tourist town that does it tough off-peak. Having travellers like you around literally ensures we survive, in every sense of the word. See you again we all hope, Jen x PS It's thanks to feedback like yours and others over recent months that it feels like we might be past those occasional covid-inspired "staff issues" - fingers firmly crossed :)

We went for a couple of days to support small business but were left disappointed this time..I don’t want to be mean but what I am Just stating my experience so you can decide if it’s for you—

Pros-
Close to town, 15 min walk.
Clean rooms/ bathrooms
Bed was comfortable
Peaceful courtyard
Pop up cafe had nice food

Cons-
Small rooms
Shower has really low pressure and in the morning the shower would keep switching to cold /too hot/ freezing( really not sure what the deal with the shower is.. it’s just different everyday. Don’t expect a nice relaxing hot shower after whale watching in the cold.)
Staff were ok. The receptionist was polite but didn’t look like she enjoyed her job.
No one at reception after 6pm
Could hear people giggling and coughing in the next room at night. No buffer or sound proofing.
No soap to wash hands in bathroom, only shower gel
No extra blankets in case you don’t want to sleep without the heater on
The champagne bar closes at 6pm.
No red wine in the bar
Only one champagne available by glass

We stayed in a junior waterfront room in this very quaint hotel.

Lovely welcome by the lady on reception who recommended places to eat. She booked The Pier for us on the 2nd evening which was busy but very nice indeed

Small but very nice quirky room, very nice new bathroom with walk in shower

After eating out for many nights we sat in the hotel’s garden having a glass of complimentary champagne and we had a seafood and pate platter which was just right.

Breakfast was lovely with different egg dishes every day - coffee could be improved

Kaikoura is well known for whale watching which we saw but it is also a lovely place. The sea is fantastic.

All in all a very nice stay and many nice memories

My husband had a lovely beer and I had a delicious bubbly while sitting at a table outside overlooking the sea.
Two of the sharing plates were not available nor some of the cocktails, another couple that arrived walked away because of this.
We shared a cheese platter, $28 , some blue cheese, a walnut sized piece of feta, some cheddar, 3 olives and a very small piece of fruit paste. The biscuits were more plentiful but were very dry, and the 4 darker biscuits were soft, did not eat many of them.
We wore masks in there until we were seated but the 2 staff that served us did not.

We booked a front room with ocean views and balcony and we were not disappointed as this is what we got and the view is lovely and the balcony a generous size to be able to sit outside and read or enjoy a nice pre-dinner drink. What I was disappointed in was the window blinds faced the morning sun and the room was alight with the new day a little too early for me. While we did not stay here to watch TV I was amazed that the only service available was Freeview. Apart from this, the room was great, location is good and the staff friendly.

The Garden rooms are refurbished 1970s style hotel rooms, although the bedroom was small it was nicely decorated with all the mod cons. The bathroom was not as well done (eg mismatched Lino) and needed some work.

At the end of the day (at close to $200) our room was too expensive for what it was, especially with the town being so quiet.

Great location, rooms were very small but well equipped and clean.
Requested for late check-out of 12 noon instead of 10am, they agreed without mentioning any additional charge, but a day after check-out they charged my credit card NZ100. Unethical to charge a customer without informing, and obviously now they refuse to reverse the charge. Extremely unprofessional behaviour of the hotel staff.

My husband and I LOVED staying at the kaikoura boutique hotel for 2 days whilst exploring the beautiful village. What we discovered was the cafe at the hotel is fabulous food, service and views of the bay. The girls kept us happy with wine and food whilst we enjoyed the beautiful sunshine and unseasonable warm temperatures. This hotel is full of characters inside and out; a unique gem in the Heart of kaikoura. Muchimo gracias/ thanks a million Jen!!!

Hi Sarah. I am so sorry, but we do not have the facilities to have three adults per room. All of our rooms just have the one bed, either a Queen or a King. In this case I would suggest 2 rooms, perhaps the smallest room, the Courtyard Standard would be suitable for your son? Kind regards, Robyn.
