Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a great hostel that very much feels like home. The rooms were nice and clean and the common room feels like your living room. Kitchen was great as was the amazing coffee(not instant!). During our stay it seemed to have a bit of a younger crowd then we were expecting as many seemed to be in their early 20s but it may have been part of a organized group. The rooms have excellent sound proofing as there was quite a party outside that we couldn't hear at all!

I’d say mixed bag. We booked a private room which was nice and the paintings in the hostel were beautiful. Free pancakes on Sunday were delightful and it was nice to be walking distance from the beach. We loved Kaikoura. I cannot fault them for the vibes of people there, but our several day stay was pretty much surrounded by people not interacting with each other which was a shame compared to other hostels I’ve visited. I appreciated the eco friendly products and did not find their front of staff particularly warm or inviting. I’d say they should find a way to secure doors as the wind made them slam loudly at all times of day. Overall it was not the experience I expected from such a well rated establishment.

As soon as I arrived at Albatross, I could tell this place was different. Instruments, artwork, and messages of peace and love all over the walls, I loved it. There was a bin of free clothing, a place to leave food scraps for the pigs, hammocks, bean bags, a huge kitchen. There was even eco-friendly soap, it's lovely to stay at a sincerely eco-friendly place.

Best of all, the staff is extremely laid back and easy going. This is a paradise on the East Coast of New Zealand.

As soon as I arrived I was welcomed warmly and asked if I had booked any sightseeing or excursions. I had booked to go on the whale watch and was immediately told that with the look of the weather it would probably be cancelled. He then phoned his contact and managed to book me another space at a different time. His knowledge was amazing.

When you step into this hostel, you are taken into the cosy kitchen/lounge/dining area, the walls of which are adorned with 1,000 pieces of artwork! Tucked away in a corner of the lounge, there are art materials which hostellers are welcome to use to create their own piece of artwork to add to the display. The hostel is friendly and charming, hosted by a delightful couple, Ben and Katie, who clearly love it. There are plenty of seating areas inside and out which provide hostellers with comfortable places to relax. Games are provided, musical instruments are waiting to be played and a handy shelf of books ensures that no-one is without something to read. The kitchen area is spacious enough but a few more saucepans would be helpful. The rooms at the hostel were comfortable and the hostel was clean. We would certainly recommend staying at this hostel - in fact, we didn't want to leave!

I really loved this hostel, the owners were really nice and chatty and the hostel was spotlessly clean. It’s design was really funky and warm. We stay here when swimming with the dolphins, this was only a two minute walk to there office. Loved it and would stay here again

Stayed here back in 2016, was lovely back then ... Well not now, because the front door was closed (even if the owner 3 days later, without answering our five calls says otherwise). So as mentioned, call five times, ask the neighbours and wrote an email. After an hour we had to book another room for the night. Well, not a problem.
3 days later our creditcard gets charged and the emails four days later were anwesered, but in an unkind manner. Claims you can not open a door, he would not have received any calls (I checked).
Worst customer service ever.

Awful guy running the place, bossy, unfriendly and sketchy vibes. He kept staring at us. My friends and i had the option to stay longer, but went somewhere else. Place was dirty crowded and disorganized.

I'll start by saying that it's a really nice hostel. Quirky and cute and I can see why it got such good reviews.

However, we had a horrible experience with one of the owners. Unfortunately, after the reception was closed (closes 7PM), we pulled the covers to get into bed in our double room and saw a white crusty stain on the blue sheet. We're not the fussiest of guests, but when you pay 80$ a night for a room, you expect the sheets to be clean at least, plus it was right where you'd sleep.

We called the owner, to ask if we could get a new sheet- no big deal right ? Well ! I was chocked at how the owner dealt with this. He marched over to our room, looked at the stain and called us liars. He basically was saying that we had cause the stain and wouldn't believe us that it was already there. I never experienced such bad customer service. After a few minutes of arguing, he went away and came back with a clean sheet that he dropped on the bed and marched of without another word.

Unbelievable. It's a shame as the hostel was nice. But this kind of customer service means we'll never go again!

This backpacker provided the worst accommodation experience in my life. On arrival we were told that our 7-year old daughter is not allowed to stay. A 'minor detail' that had deserved a one-line mention on the website and a short note at the bottom of a very long confirmation email (I had not seen it obviously!). We were turned away on the spot AND still charged full price for the triple room. Incredibly rude, especially since Kaikoura was fully booked that day. We had to sleep in our car. The manager was absolutely merciless.
