Detailed Reviews
in this beautiful small luxury inn. We loved it the moment we drove up, and truly were very disappointed we only had one night reserved. This is one of the nicest small lodges we have stayed in, with a host/owner who gives every effort to make your stay enjoyable. The deck draws you out immediately...the view is breathtaking, arm yourself with a bottle of white and sit awhile! Our room was absolutely so tastefully done, every thing thought of, lots of little extras and a delicious breakfast...one of the best we had on the road! It is the quiet that grabs you, the town of Hokitika offers a nice diversion and the surrounding area is full of interesting spots to visit. Simply put, we simply loved our moments here at Rimu Lodge....thank you Sue Ellen, we definitely hope to return.

This lodge is rated very high for a reason: Sue-Ellen, host and owner, does her utmost to please you as a guest. From the moment you enter the driveway till you leave, she is providing comfort and information on what to do around Hokitika.
Not well known is the easy drive to the glaciers Fox and Frans Joseph; also not well known is the possibility to see water related birds in their natural environment. She organized a last minute cruise on the creek, just to spot the rare white New Zealand heron and the not so rare spoonbill. As a bonus we also saw the Australasian Bittern.
Hokitika itself is a nice little town with a beach and lots of galeries, providing a selection of local products in all price ranges; as well as some nice restaurants.
Most guests stay only for one night in the Rimu Lodge, as a stop-over in their trip crossing the South Island. We would recommend at least 2, but also for 3 nights there is plenty to do and see.
The rooms are almost equal and very well appointed; the view is stunning in all, but specially on the first floor. The outdoor terras is a lovely secluded place to enjoy the sun with your drink.
Her breakfast service could easily been in a 5* hotel; and she only caters for 8 guests max.
We truly enjoyed our stay and will return if we come back to the South Island

We were lucky enough to have two nights at the Lodge last week towards the end of a long NZ holiday. My only regret is that we didn’t have a couple more nights here. It’s quiet, stylish, oozes quality and little extras were much appreciated. Nothing was too much trouble for Sue-Ellen and her knowledge of the area was very helpful in planning things to do.
Great place, Thank you

From the moment we arrived at Rimu Lodge, we knew we were at someplace special. Sue Ellen, the owner came out to greet us as we arrived to the Lodge. We walked into the spacious and well-appointed living area with a cheery fire in the fireplace welcoming us.
Our Korimako room was on the 2nd floor with high ceiling and wonderful views over the valley. Sue Ellen showed us the room amenities which included robes, coffees, teas, refrigerator, chocolates and large bathroom with shower. Guests can also enjoy a glass of port or whiskey downstairs. We had brought some wine and went downstairs to sip and enjoy the fireplace.
The Rimu Lodge is the perfect central getaway to the many sights in the area including the coolest little town Hokitika, Hokitika Gorge, Dorothy Falls and more. It was our wedding anniversary during our trip to New Zealand and out of all the hotels we mentioned this to, only Sue Ellen surprised us with fresh roses from her garden, chocolates and a specially created note. That really touched us that she went above and beyond to make our stay extra special.
Breakfast the next morning was a hot breakfast made to order with cereals, yogurt and fruit to round out the menu. We enjoyed our coffee in the beautiful living area as we ate our breakfast looking over her gardens and valley.
Though we were there for one night, staying at Rimu Lodge was a five-star lodge with five-star hospitality from our gracious host Sue Ellen. We would definitely stay there again.

This modern boutique accommodation has been thoughtfully and lovingly furnished by host Sue-Ellen to provide every comfort and facility a discerning guest could ask for. The situation on a hillside just 10 minutes from Hokitika township and the coast has an expansive outlook over the river plain, the hills and the distant Southern Alps. There are several outdoor areas to relax in and in less than perfect weather there is central heating, and an open fire . Sue-Ellen is a warm and considerate host and to top it all off provides a great breakfast! Highly recommended. Only Qualmark 5 star Lodge on the West Coast.

This is a lovely small lodge a few miles inland from Hokitika. It has only 4 rooms, and the host Sue Ellen does absolutley everything she can to make the stay enjoyable for this small number of guests. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the views across the river are wonderful. Breakfast is excellent. I cannot speak too highly of the Rimu Lodge.

From the moment we drove in we were impressed and made to feel welcome and special. We were told of activities in and around Hokitika. Shown to the ‘Tui” room we were immediately impressed with the décor before stepping out onto the large deck overlooking the valley and river. After a great night’s sleep in the most comfortable bed, we headed into breakfast that would rival the best we have enjoyed. Sue-ellen is the ultimate hostess with many little extras and an eye for detail. I cannot rate Rimu Lodge highly enough so if you come to Hokitika you will be in for a treat.

We had a great one night stay at Rimu Lodge while heading south on our trip from Christchurch to Queenstown. It made for a perfect stop just outside Hokitika.
We received a very warm welcome and were very impressed by the high standard of the property. Our room with ensuite bathroom was spacious and in top condition with complimentary bathroom amenities. We even received turndown service while out which was unexpected and a nice touch.
Although it was raining for part of our stay, the veranda outside the rooms and the main dining area had spectacular views and can easily imagine myself sitting there and having a relaxing time.
Our friendly host was very helpful in giving us all the local information and suggestions for visiting glow worm caves as well as dining options.
Breakfast was also a delight, served in the main living room area of the lodge, which overlooked the patio. During sunnier days breakfast can be served outside.
Overall, we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay and would highly recommend the lodge!

We stayed for two nights in this absolutely outstanding, small B and B. Sue Ellen was the perfect hostess. Our room was a generous size with lovely crisp white bed linen. The bathroom was immaculate. Our room overlooked the spectacular view across the Hokitika River. As it was so private we left the curtains open and woke to stunning sunrises over the river. The large communal sitting area was stylish with a big open fire and comfy leather sofas and chairs. Breakfast was delicious - fruit juices, cereals, fruits, yoghurt, different breads and croissant and a good variety of cooked breakfasts. In the evenings we went to a charming authentic gold miners pub just down the road where we had a good dinner. We don’t hesitate to highly recommend Rimu Lodge.

The Rimu Lodge was our favorite bnb on our recent trip to New Zealand. Sue Ellen was a wonderful, gracious host. The inn is set in a magnificent location and our room on the second floor had an incredible view of the Hokitika River and hills and a particularly wonderful bathroom and shower. We arrived there late because of delays on the Tranzalpine train. Her other guests were enjoying wine and snacks, but we were tired and hungry and decided to order a pizza to go. She took out menus and ordered for us. When we got back, two places were set up outside so we could enjoy the view while we ate. She then offered us wine to go with our meal.
The next morning breakfast was delicious and Sue Ellen was making suggestions to her guests about what they might do for the day and handing out maps or brochures to help us. We only wished we had stayed there for two nights instead of one! Thank you Sue Ellen!
