We like to stay in hostels around NZ for the variety of individual style and owners; for their personal touches; for the opportunity to meet interesting people; for good quality, location and value for money. Birdsong ticked every box and more besides! Kerry and Neil are owners who go the extra mile, doing everything themselves: building the accommodation; maintenance; cleaning; decorating throughout with Kerry’s original artwork; providing fresh eggs from their chooks and herbs from their garden; offering a lift to pick up our car at Kumara. Their welcome was warm and genuine; they made time to chat and help us enjoy our stay. We had tramped the Old Ghost Road and cycled The Wilderness Trail before arriving in Hokitika. We wanted to recharge and make the most of the town and area before moving on to more tramping in Arthur’s Pass. Birdsong was ideal: a safe bike shed; parking; location just out of the centre; lovely room and comfortable bed; two showers with plenty of hot water; a nice blend of families, couples, singles, small groups so interesting conversation flowed in the large kitchen, dining, sitting area with great sea views. We enjoyed it so much and found so much to do that we stayed an extra night, four in total. The icing on the cake was being able to buy Kerry’s beautiful postcard-size paintings of NZ birds from the small gallery of her work at Reception, delightful mementoes of our trip. Thank you, Kerry and Neil for a wonderful stay. We hope to see you again.…
We were looking for last-minute accommodation for our family of 4 over the busy holiday season and Kerry went out of her way to accommodate us. A lovely spot with a very tranquil, homely atmosphere. Decorated with beautiful artwork and straight over the road from the Wild west coast beach. My only regret would be forgetting to buy some of Kerry's painted bird postcards before I left! Clean, friendly and relaxed. Part of the YHA group and affordable priced. Would definitely recommend.
I went to Hokitika for a solo stay, and ended up staying for four days, mostly because the Birdsong Hostel was such an idyllic spot. I spent hours roaming the endless beach, taking bike tours, having coffees in town, but mostly i hung out at Birdsong. Kerry and Neil were the perfect hosts, so i highly recommend staying at Birdsong if you want a comfy, easy-going and peaceful stay or stop-off in Hokitika.
A group of 5 uof us stayed two nights at this lovely little hostel, and enjoyed every moment. The owners are so very kind, generous, and welcoming. The facilities were spotless and the atmosphere was very laid back and artistic. The views of the sea from the dining area was unreal, and the outdoor garden/bbq area was the perfect place to wind down after a day at the beach. We will recommend this hostel to anyone going through hokitika, it's the perfect home away from home.
We are 62 & 63 years old, looking for good value accommodation whilst traveling and skeptical of hostels as a place for us. However, Birdsong is wonderful! We were able to book a private room (shared bathroom) with ocean view, The room, common area, and bathroom was spotless. The common kitchen has everything you need from dishes, cutlery, pots, pans, and even wine glasses! Shelves for your own dry food and fridge/freezer space was so well organized. Did not need the laundry, but machines are there as well. Would definitely recommend!
