Detailed Reviews
I stayed in two B & Bs during my five week tour of New Zealand. Teichelmann's in Hokitika was one of these. The day I arrived was wet and there was a rock festival in the town but the warm, friendly, very helpful and charming hosts more than compensated for these drawbacks. The cottage may appear small from the outside but is full of character with a distinguished history. My delightful hosts went out of their way to explain that history and to tell me so much about the west coast of New Zealand. This sort of welcome and treatment is not something one can get in an hotel but make such a difference when one is travelling alone and so far from home. I will never forget such kindness!

Thank you so much for your kind remarks. We were very happy to be able to share your holiday when you stayed in our great wee town. The weather was not the best for you but hopefully our hosting made up for that. We do hope your wee cat was VERY happy to see you when you returned home and she had not caused the cat sitters any trouble. Thanks again Colin, we wish you all the very best in your retirement years. Best Regards Frances and Brian

Our short stay in Hokitika turned into a highlight of our trip thanks to Frances and Brian. We're fortunate to have traveled pretty extensively, but we haven't stayed in many B&Bs until our trip to New Zealand in March. We stayed in Hokitika for one night towards the tail end of our trip, and our short stay couldn't have been better!
Thanks to our hosts Brain and Frances, Teichelmann's couldn't feel any more like home. The B&B is in right of the thick of things, and you actually feel like you're stepping back in time as you walk in. Hokitika is a charming former boom town on the West Coast, and the B&B is the former doctor's residence from that era.
You can either stay in the house itself, or in the garden cottage out back, which we elected to do. It was the right choice as it was immaculate and very private. You actually melt into the mattress when you lay on the bed. There's a spacious bathroom and a private sitting area in the courtyard. The coolest feature is the "gold mining" view right out of the window, which makes you feel like you're back in the boom era.
What sets Teichelmann's apart is it's hosts. Brain and Frances offered to drive us to a restaurant right outside of town so that we could enjoy the wine there. They also prepared us tea and homemade cookies as we were settling in. As someone who travels by their stomach, I was definitely won over. Now in the morning, that's when I was truly in heaven. Guests are treated to an amazing homemade breakfast, complete with everything to prepare you for a full day of hiking and exploring the South Island. We had homemade banana muffins, granola and yogurt, juice and coffee, fried eggs, bacon, roasted tomatoes, and toast with preserves.
Even after staying in only a few bed and breakfasts so far, we know Teichelmann's will be hard to top!

We recently enjoyed a short stay at this most lovely and character filled B&B. We stayed the private Cottage in the garden. Our suite was most attractive with a comfortable bed, a large bathroom containing a Jacuzzi, plus features such as free wifi, tv, plus a table and chairs out on the veranda to sit at and enjoy the pretty garden. Frances and Brian were charming hosts who went out of their way to ensure we enjoyed our stay, lending me a book on the history of the area and bringing me coffee and freshly made pumpkin scones for afternoon tea. Frances is an excellent cook providing a very extensive array of food options for breakfast in the most attractive dining room. The location is very convenient in a quiet area but only a short stroll to the shops, restaurants and beach area.

We were pleased to stay at Teichelmann's Bed and Breakfast when visiting Hokitika. The house was warm, inviting and very relaxing. We stayed in Teichy's Cottage, a room at the rear of the house. It was beautiful with a porch with a table and chairs to enjoy the yard on a sunny day. The owners recommended places to see, artists to visit, and restaurants to eat at. They even offered to drive us to dinner and pick us up. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful. It would have been nice to stay several days more.

This is such a nice B&B, run by a couple that truly cares that you have an optimal experience. They made sure that we knew exactly what the best options were for experiencing the local tourist sites, and referred us to a really good restaurant nearby. Breakfast was superb, and we would highly recommend Teichelmann's as the place to stay in Hokitika!

We only had one night here and would have loved a longer stay. We had a very comfortable room with everything one could ask for. A well equipped ensuite bathroom. Breakfast was delicious. Frances and Brian made us feel very welcome and we were extremely comfortable. We loved to read about the history of the house and Brian had a host of stories to relate - all with great humour. It was easy to walk around the town and there was much to see. The only disappointment was not being able to visit the Museum which was exactly opposite the B&B. It had been closed due to the earthquake! A really lovely place to stay and wish we could go back.

Cozy room on the second floor with a steep staircase up. We had a private bathroom but one of the rooms had a private bathroom in the corridor. Good location, close to everything. Helpful and friendly hosts who offered Sherry. Fantastic breakfast where we really can recommend Egg Benedict.

We were recommended a stay at this B&B an we were not disappointed. Brian & Frances were perfect hosts and very friendly. A cup of tea on arrival and a nice chat on our return in the evening. The highlight was the breakfast next morning which was well cooked and the fruit compot was fantastic.
The owners tend to only take a few guests so you would have to book ahead.
the B&B was right opposite the Museum and in walking distance to all the restaurants, bars and beach.

My husband and I loved staying there. It is too bad that our stay is so short. The owners are super friendly. Our room was facing the back yard and it was nice and quiet. Our room was clean, the bed was super comfy and warm. The house is located in downtown a block away from the beach and close to all the restaurants/shops. We had Indian food for dinner, which was pretty good. btw, the owners are not interested in last minute showing up without reservation because it would make the workload unpredictable. So, if you want to stay there, you would need to make a reservation.

Francis and Bryan could write the book on how to run a B&B and keep their guests happy. We stayed here for two nights and if we ever return to NZ, will definitely come here again. Their breakfast was quite substantial and excellently prepared. Our room was a bit small but it was what we chose to be on the first floor plus it's a historic home which is what we love. Our hosts gave us great ideas on how to use our time wisely and where to eat. Bryan even took us to his Rotary club meeting which was a wonderful experience.
