Detailed Reviews
If you think you've missed it-keep going! This site is quite a drive from the main highway but well worth it. It's beautifully secluded with plenty of pitches, well serviced modern toilet and washing block. We had a s/c campervan but did use the toilet facilities which were clean and well kept. Payment is via an envelope DOC system and price per night was very cheap and excellent value for money. Saw pukekos running along the trackside on the approach in and cheeky wekas were straight in there investigating the camper as we arrived. These flightless birds are very friendly and bold - lots of photo opportunities! Great place with information boards about the gold mining history around which the campground is located, free gold panning equipment to try your luck nearby - just return when finished with. We weren't able to visit the Glowworm dell nearby but this is another attraction near to the site to take in.

Our plan was to reach Hokitika gorge campsite by nightfall. But the numerous scenic spots on the way made us impossibly delayed. In search for an alternate spot in pitch darkness, we found this on the internet.. a bit of drive 10kms or so from the main highway on what seemed like a gravel road, we finally reached the spot... first views were after daylight in the morning... very peaceful and quiet location, only a few other campers (because of the distance I assume), nice small stream nearby. There is no dump station for campervans, but easy access to plenty of freshwater, flush toilets , external wash basins for brushing as well as larger wash basins for washing utensils. Nothing else on the campsite.. and it does what it is supposed to do... decent place to rest for the night.. freshen up and be on the way

This campsite is a little far off the main highway but worth the drive.Limited space but new and clean toilets and sinks, shelter with information boards about the goldrush times and even a pan to try goldpanning in the nearby river(free to use for campers, just put it back when finished:)).Two rather steep tracks to walk.Done those after a rainy period and it got really slippery but seeing the old goldmining area was nice.Did not find any gold though ;) payment via honesty box

This DOC site is excellent for self contained motorhomes. Secluded and quiet. It cost us $20 for the night. It is a fair drive off the main road but well worth the effort. It is picturesque with walks all around. Highly recommended if you want to get away from the crowds.

This was definitely one of the best DOC campgrounds we stayed at during our multi-month trip around New Zealand! There were lots of nice, soft, green spaces. As it is a little out of the way, it wasn't very busy. When we visited, there were brand-new-looking facilities.

A nice campsite but a little bit off the highway (at one point we thought we were lost but it turned out we hadn't gone far enough). Once we were at the campsite we were impressed by the set-up. Only $3 for the night and they have free use of gold panning equipment. Also there was plenty of information about the history of the area and walks. We opted to do the shorter tunnel walk the next morning which lasted about 20 minutes and took us through some impressive tunnels and onto a forest walk on a raised platform.
