Detailed Reviews
The property is located in a quiet location, 5mins drive from the city centre where the all the restaurants, cafes and supermarkets are located. Opposite the motel is the Glow Worm Dell, you just need to cross the road after dark to enjoy some quiet moments with the glow worms.
Room is very spacious and clean, but the bathroom is slightly small and need some manouvering during shower

We had a three night stay here and couldn’t speak highly enough of the staff, camp or the facilities.
However, I’d have to say that the power sites are only designed for motor homes as they are small and don’t allow any room to put up an awning. On this occasion, this suited us and the sites had both power and water at each site. We were pleasantly surprised to be offered a discount on our fees as the kitchen wasn’t available due to it being upgraded. Again this wasn’t an issue for us as we are self contained.
I’d have no hesitation staying there again as it was a lovely camp.

Thank you for your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. We absolutely agree that our sites are only suited to campervans of average to small size. We highly encourage larger campervans or caravans to check out some of the other amazing holiday parks in Hokitika. However, it is always nice to hear when we still meet someone's needs like we did for you. We look forward to hosting you in future if you make another visit to Hokitika.

After feeling uncomfortable in our freedom camping site around 9pm, my wife and I decided to leave and find somewhere else to stay. 30mins later we rolled into Shining Star to only realize the registration office was empty and closed for the night. In desperation I have a knock on the door anyways, and to our surprise one of the managers there (Ben) opened everything up just to get us checked in for the night. He could not have been more kind, patient, and excited to walk us through the property map. The camping facilities were clean and with such close access to the beach, farm animals, and the Glow Worm Dell this place is a must stay if you’re in Hokitika.

We booked directly and where given a room rate of $155 per night for a cabin. It was very disappointing the unit smelt like an old community hall there were holes in the carpet with dirt around the edges. The bath room had an old shower curtain and the tapware had staining around it and needed a good clean when we pulled the bedding back the duvet had fluff and hair on the underside (yuk). The entire unit needs a complete refurbishment if you are going to charge those prices. On the flipside the staff were very accommodating and there was no problem obtaining a refund. Consequently we went into town and found a lovely clean new unit for $12 less.

Thank you for your feedback. We will pass along the information, so we can avoid this happening again in future. We aim to provide a higher standard of service to all of our guests, so we are disappointed that we did not deliver on this occasion. We are glad you were still able to enjoy the rest of your stay in Hokitika while staying elsewhere.

We were in a beachfront chalet which is at the beach side of the property, but does have a field with a pony in it between the chalet and the beach. Don’t expect much of a view of the sea.
The bed was very comfortable. The chalet has air conditioning. The wifi was poor and kept dropping out. The kitchenette has a two ring hob, toaster, microwave and kettle. The hob must be the slowest electric hob I have ever used! My attempt at a stir fry ended up and slow braised (still tasted good though).
There’s a big New World supermarket 15 minutes walk away.
There are laundry facilities on site, but we didn’t have the need for them so can’t comment.

We stayed as a couple in a Spa Beachfront Chalet. Location on the edge of town makes for a quiet stay, and the sound of the surf in the background provides comforting "white noise". It is a short walk past a horse paddock to get to the sandy beach.
The unit was a bit in need of refurbishment and only one of the two gas burners on the cooker was working properly. The fairly steep stairs to the bedroom on the mezzanine level could be difficult for some, especially since the only toilet is in the bathroom downstairs.
Check-in was seamless and check-out the same.
Overall impression - nice to be by the sea, but a bit overpriced at $195.00 per night.

Spent a night in our campervan. The setting is lovely, just a short walk from the beach which was great. Each space is quite private and you feel like you are in a forest/park. Also visited the Glow Worm Dell across the road, well worth the effort to go for a walk. If booking whilst in level 2 please note that they have closed the toilets, showers and toilets until level 1 which is OK if you are self contained, not so much if you aren't.

Upon arrival at the reception of Shining star friendly assisted. The chalet was clean and well furnished. The chalets are in a quiet location just a few minutes drive from the center of Hokitika. In the evening you can visit the beautiful glow worm dell on the other side of the main road. The beach is also close by where you can have a nice walk.

We found that the kitchen was small not very well equipped. Luckily we had some of our own cookware, knifes and saucepans ect. The kitchen was filled up for most of the evening. In the toilet and shower block, there was only 1 toilet and 1 shower in the mens and 2 toilets 1 shower in the girls. Too many campsite pitches sold for this amount of facilities. Also only one fridge which was very full so you could only fit a few things in.
The beach is so close which was great and the glow work dull is accessed by crossing the road. Also there was the cutest little cat. We paid $40 for an electric pitch

Hooked up 6 birth RV on powered site for one night in Oct 2023.
Check in was pleasant and informative with good information on Restaurants in town and the Glow Worm Dell which is literally just across the road. Pricing is on par with most sites in the area.
It's about 15-20 mins walk into town for bars, restaurants and the iconic beach with it's Hokitika sign.
The facilities on site are clean and work well and it's 1 min walk onto the beach which when we were there, was a windswept, dramatic landscape littered with driftwood. Stunning.
If touring again, this would be our Hokitika choice of hook up.
