Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stayed here with tour group and wanted to share my opinions. Think it is more a motel with a very good restaurant attached. Reception only opens 10-5pm daily and when i tried to call outside these hours only option was email. Not ideal if an emergency luckily it wasn’t. Also notice now that drivers of groups in some hotels this being one get the worst rooms which also speaks volumes. They should be the ones that need the best sleep. No lifts No air conditioned rooms Good restaurant with helpful staff but no room charge back frustrating! Not the worst but certainly not the best either. Certainly think this hotel could make a much improved stay for little effort

The hotel was clean and comfortable. The staff (Gladys) was amazing and offered extra activities around the area for us to enjoy. She always had a smile. The location is fabulous close to the town centre and the beach.

Very comfortable room with sea views if you book the Oceanfront wing. Hokitika is a charming small town and this hotel is very central and convenient for the amazing Glass Blowing shop (watch them make the glass as you shop) and the Kiwi experience which we enjoyed. For food the bakery just down the road is great and Stumpers restaurant is very popular with locals and visitors (the lamb shank was very good). The hotel also has a restaurant with sea views and a decent menu but we didn't try it. We were on a road trip and found the laundry facility in the hotel very useful - a large wash costs $10 incl powder and drying.

A well run hotel with friendly staff. Need to cater better for the growing number of cyclists using the West Coast Wilderness Trail: Bicycle storage is third world. A dark, cramped lock-up. with only 5 power points for 18 e-bikes stored in the space of one car park! Come on Beachfront - get with the cycling revolution and give cyclist better facilities.

We were put in the outer portion of the hotel (not the main portion), which we could hear every little thing from our neighbors next to us and downstairs. The room was okay in terms of the bed and bathroom; however, we wish that the walls were a bit thicker as we were up most of the night hearing doors close and people talking.

Everything of this hotel was fine - the staff were helpful and friendly and the room was clean - until when we checked out. A nightmare occured. As we checked out, a grumpy man - who seemingly had been waiting for (grilling) us and before he even introduced himself to us who he is (we later knew from the hotel staff that he was actually the general manager of the hotel, Mr Simpson) - accused us for parking our car in a reserved slot. He claimed that he had placed a cone at the slot to indicate the slot's unavailability and accused us for removing the cone ourselves for parking our car there. At that time, we could see that four cones were placed in front of our car to prevent us from leaving. We explained to him that when we parked our car in that slot last night, there was no cone - otherwise we would not have parked our car in that slot at all! No reasonable man would have done so without first checking with the hotel staff. This man, who still had not identified himself at that point, asserted that we must have done what he mentioned - because he had personally placed the cone in that slot about an hour before we parked our car to reserve the slot for his other customer and therefore he was certain that it was us who had removed the cone for parking our car. I don't know how he could be so certain though - anything could have happened within that hour and unless he had video records of what he accused us of (which if he did have, he would have known that we were not lying) he should not jump to that conclusion / verdict. And, why he could be the only one telling the truth but not us - both parties can be telling the truth and someone else might have moved the cone he placed for whatever reason before we arrived. We said we were truly sorry to hear what had happened and the potential embarrassment / inconvenience that this incident might have caused to him / his customer - but we really did not do what he accused us of simply because there were just plenty of parking spaces nearby the hotel (like there is a supermarket just opposite to the hotel with lots of parking spaces) and, as we had already settled ourselves in the hotel the day before, we did not have the need to remove any (purported) cone for parking right in front of the hotel but could park just somewhere nearby. He repeated his accusation and we repeated our explanation for a few times, up to a point that this man apparently had no other choices but to state and accept that our explanation sounded sensible to him (of course, as there is simply no lack of parking space in Hokitika at this time of the year so no one would need to do what he accused of...). The man then just walked away without any apologies - with the four cones still in front of our car. We asked the hotel staff to help us remove the cones - we did not move any (purported) cones the day before and we certainly would not do so on that day. As the staff was helping us we asked who that man was - and were advised that he was indeed the general manager in charge of the hotel, Mr Simpson. We know that Mr Simpson would look at reviews at Trip Advisor from time to time and we hope that this review can find its way to him. Again we feel sorry for what had happened to Mr Simpson and his other customer, but he simply could have talked to us in a less accusatory tone and a more private setting (we were at the hotel main entrance). Indeed, if he suspected us to have removed his cone, he could have immediately called us / knocked at our room's door (guest's car plate number needed to be provided at check-in) in that evening. Even if he chose not to disturb us in that evening (maybe he was already off at that time?), he could have asked for our accounts more politely and respectfully. We found his interrogation discomforting, disrespectful and unnecessary - and wonder whether, but for our Asian ethnicity, we would have received the same treatment / interrogation (we took note of the hotel staff's assurance that this was not the case and we would give the benefit of the doubt). It was really frustrating to have to defend to a groundless accusation and explain ourselves using a language that we are not fully fluent in (at least not so in comparison to NZ locals). There were so many ways that this incident could have been handled and Mr Simpson simply chose the worst way. Yes, it is a natural human tendency to find blame for misfortunes that occurred (and we just so happened to be the easy target there); but as a customer servicing professional (and esp. at supervisory level) one should avoid the temptation to do so. He could certainly learn a thing or two from his fellow CS team - who were friendly and kind to us. We hope this review would be helpful to the travellers in choosing their stay - and to the hotel / Mr Simpson as well in continuously improving the service.

Revolting. Rude old woman at reception. No one offered to take our luggage to our room. No elevator so we carried 4 suitcases us the flight of stairs. A room you couldn’t swing a cat in. Cutlery drawer had one teaspoon in it. No cooling, just a fan. I could feel the springs in the bed digging into my back… The building reminds me of a renovated aged care facility.. NEVER EVER STAY THERE!

Ok- ish stay. Room was warm but the towel rail in the bathroom wasn't working which was disappointing as one needs a warm towel getting out of the bath , especially when its cold & blowing a gale outside. View of ocen from our room . We didn't eat in the hotel , walked across the road to a bar. Room was clean & I think they're decorating some. Asked to borrow a couple of cereal bowls ( we're not into huge cooked breakfasts!) but they wouldn't oblige . Really??? After paying so much for a room ! A kettle & fridge with tea/ coffee/ hot chocolate options .
