This place was recommended to me by Hokitika i-Site (after a couple of bad experiences with dodgy hotels that paid to appear at the top of the listings, I always get in touch with the local information centre for recommendations.)

This is definitely the place to stay if you're looking for good quality. My room had a big bed area with the kitchenette next to it, and then a big lounge area with a glass door and balcony area. Everything was in perfect condition, and the owner went out of his way for me many times throughout my trip.

Instead of a key or card, you just have an access code which they tell you before you arrive. I found it really helpful to a) not have to fiddle with a card and b) not faff around with checking in after taking two flights from Auckland.

I was in the Chief Millard room on the ground floor, which is accessible for people with disabilities. The photos show just stairs outside the doors, but that's not actually the entrance of the motel - the entrance is around the back and there's a shallow ramp. Then when you get inside it's entirely flat floor except for the small lip of the carpet in the room. There's a rail by the toilet and a rail and seat in the shower.

All the rooms are cleaned to Covid Clean standards and their website says the ventilation is designed to remove 99% of viruses. The rooms have a kitchenette and they're located just a few minutes from a lot of restaurants, which I found really useful as someone who needs to get takeaways due to covid risk (I have medically vulnerable family members).

All in all, this place was excellent! Supposedly they're one of the top accommodation places on the West Coast and it shows.

We had 2 two nights here while we were cycling the West Coast Wilderness Trail. There are a total of 5 apartments with the lager 3 bedroom one being on the ground floor and the other 4 apartments on the first floor. The have all been beautifully renovated and are in the original old fire station. Each room is named after a past Hokitika fire chief. There is plenty of space in all of them and they have even put a 'firemans pole' in each one (not functional I might add!) In the 3 bed apartment there is full cooking facilities and a dishwasher whilst the other rooms have a kitchenette with coffee machine, toaster, kettle and microwave. The Beds are extremely comfortable. I cannot recommend these apartments more highly - best spot in Hoki!!!

Wow, Hokitika was a quick stopover for us after driving up the West Coast before going on to Christchurch, but now wish we spent an extra night or two just to enjoy the room.
From the historic building with antique firetruck parked out the front, to the funky entry and staircase, and entering the room itself, this place a some great character to it.
The rooms are large with a spacious shower in the ensuite bathroom, it is easy to relax. Small kitchenette in the room for self catering is well laid out wit seperate living and dining areas.
The only downsides (which I don't feel detract from a 5 star rating) are the wall seem quite thin, can easily hear the next room, however this is hard to avoid in old buildings (street noise on New Year's Eve wasn't an issue). Also, just had to be mindful the door closes and locks when leaving as it seemed a bit tight and didn't fully close when exiting the room.

We stayed in the Chief Shain room, everything was perfect from the keyless entry to both the front door and room to the incredibly comfortable space which included a great bed and bathroom a 3 seater, arm chair dining table and chairs. The room has been awesomely furnished with quality fixtures and fittings. The kitchen had, a microwave, coffee machine, fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. Downstairs a shared washhouse with 2 washing machines and a dryer. Outside good parking, an electric car charge station and bike storage. The property is perfectly located close to town, the beach and the river. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the owners on the wonderful fit out I hope you are proud of what you have achieved.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Hokitika Fire Station and absolutely LOVED it! I had read about the restored fire station in a travel magazine a few years ago and had always wanted to stay there. It didn't disappoint, and in fact, it actually exceeded our expectations. Each of the five rooms are named after a past fire station chief. We were in the Chief McFarlane room (on the top floor) for two nights and found it incredibly spacious, plush, comfortable and immaculately clean. The room was tastefully decorated with old fire station gear (even a hat to try on!) and the bed was like sleeping on a cloud it was so soft and snuggly. Being centrally located in the CBD of Hokitika made it easy to pop out for a morning coffee and easy not having to worry about having a drink or two with dinner as no driving was necessary. We cannot speak more highly of this accommodation spot. A real winner and worth every penny!

The Fire station was a centrally located accommodation place in Hokitika. We stayed in the Chief Macfarlane Apartment on the top floor. The apartment was comfortable and spacious. The complex had a laundry - maybe with washing machines and driers that had a mind of their own but none the less they were convenient. The tv was behind the bed on the wall which was great as we were not tempted to watch tv at all. The compendium in the room was informative and the accommodation was in walking distance to cafes and restaurants. Highly recommend the Hokitika Fire Station Boutique Accommodation as a place to stay.

The apartment was very clean and well kept. The entire presentation of the hotel is emmaculate. So nice having a 5* location to stay in at a prime spot. Friendly owners! Loved how there was Luxury Shampoo, Conditioner & shower gel provided instead of the wee pottles you usually get. The fire truck parked out front is the perfect finishing touch for a photo opp! Thank-you for a wonderful stay, next time my friends & I will book the 3 Bedroom apartment! Lukie.

We stayed 2 nights at the Hokitika Fire Station in the Chief McFarlane room. The room was wonderful. We were upstairs and had windows that opened, so we had a nice fresh breeze in the room. We could step out the front door and be in the centre of town. So handy. The room was clean and modern. There is a great key code system at the front door and the room, so you don't have to worry about carrying room keys or room access cards. Really enjoyable stay.

We stayed at the Firestation for two nights with our two children. It was very cosy and well appointed accommodation which was super handy to some fabulous cafes / restaurants. The kids loved the old fire truck outside and having wifi / Netflix meant we could just chill at night after fun but exhausting days.
We will definitely be back. Would highly recommend.
