Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed with Gavin and Cindy having ridden from Ross earlier in the day with our friends. From the welcome blackboard with our names on it to breakfast the next morning we were delighted. The trip through the wetlands to the lake was a definite highlight. The other was the fantastic dinner, three wonderful courses with the boat trip between main and dessert. Hot drinks and chocolates on the boat. Plenty of birds including majestic white herons along the way.

Well appointed and spotless cottages. Great beds and nothing was too much. Gavin making adjustments to my wife’s bike to letting us take the car back into hokitika before dinner. These lovely people are fantastic hosts. Highly recommended.

Well it took some finding to start with. Our instructions were to turn on the address flag outside on the main road but unfortunately it was no longer there at the time we visited. I'm not sure what I was expecting as this was number 10 on our B&B venture list during our 28 day trek but initially it wasn't what we were invited to. Up across and along the farm track we were kindly shown around our offered place to stay. Bit confusing as there were several units on the site all under the name of 'Kotuku' Cottage. The place I had in my mind that I thought I had booked was the detached cottage across the way which actually heralded the one and only sign that I could see which clearly had it's namesake on it albeit chalked on a little board, neverless the less clever evident. When questioned I was informed that this place had been offered to someone celebrating their birthday. So here we were in a tiny but smart and clean dwelling where the kitchen was outside! Great on a hot Summer day in NZ but not in Spring when the wind was whipping round on a grey day. My heart fell but the owner was such a sweet lady that I just couldn't in the life of me complain but in reality I wanted to retreat back to the car. Then when I asked where the TV might be I was told hubby hadn't had the time to fit one yet and that this was unfortunately the only place on site absent of such luxury. Thankfully all was not lost and god was clearly looking down on us or maybe this nice lady stood before us could see that at my old arthriticky age the outdoor cooking outside experience did not fill me with enthusiasm as my student 'don me back pack on days' had long gone by and were now sadly no more than a distant memory ~ so when this angel of loveliness said I wonder if you'd like our other cottage that was fully up and running and fully equipped ~ well I just jumped at the chance. Ending of the story ~ utterly perfect. Warm, clean and cosy ~ beautiful. So yes I'd recommend this place. Students and youngesers that think they're made of hard stuff ~ you take the Kotuku Cottage with no name but don't mind cooking outdoor when temperatures drop or old dames like me that like a bit of comfort ~ you take the Kotuku Cottage with also no name but has an indoor kitchen :) Have fun...Recommendation for the lovley lady ~ why not name the Kotuku Cottages 1, 2 and 3 on your advertising ~might make it a tadge easier for would be travellers to recognised immediately what accommodation they're actually booking ~ oh and maybe get that 'orange' flag flying as your turn off can be easily missed. Other than that thank you so much ~ it was lovely
