We spent two nights at Kapitea Lodge in December 2019. The Inn is a really lovely place. We really enjoyed the view of the ocean and the garden. Our room was very cozy and also had a great view. Doreen and Geoff we were great hosts. They gave us really good advice on restaurants and places to visit in the area. We really enjoyed our time there and will definitely come back.

We stayed one night on our trip up the West Coast. The lodge and gardens are beautiful and extremely well kept. My partner took lots of photos... 😁 The owners Doreen and Geoff were welcoming and friendly hosts.

We stayed in the Tasman room upstairs with a balcony looking over the garden and out to sea. The room itself was spacious and the bed comfy.

Finally the included breakfast was lovely setting us up for our day well.

Highly recommended!

We recently stayed for 2 nights at the lodge as the final leg of our NZ family vacation and simply loved it . It’s a beautiful house with every room done up tastefully. What we really appreciated was that the hosts (Geoff and Doreen) have taken care of every minor detail to really make it comfortable and it had a real home away from home feel . They are a lovely couple and were wonderful hosts . If you are planning to stay near Hokitika - highly recommend that you check out the kapitea lodge

Kapitea Lodge is a lovely place to stay in the Hokitika area. The lodge has a beautiful garden and an outdoor fireplace. The rooms have good views of the ocean and trees. Geoff and Doreen are very gracious hosts, which gave our stay a personal touch. The complimentary continental breakfast is convenient and we enjoyed talking to the other guests at the lodge at the large dining table (you can have breakfast at a different time or different table if you don't want to socialize). They had good recommendations for dining. We drove from the Windwhistle/Mt Hutt area that day, and it was the perfect place to break our journey before driving on to Franz Josef the next day.

First off, I can't believe this place only has 1 review! It deserves so much more.
Hidden away at the top of a dusty gravel roads sits Kapitea Lodge. It looks particularly different from the outside due to the roof design, so looked forward to seeing the inside.
The place is owned by a lovely couple, who also have this place as their home, which is the first time I've experienced such a thing. It may sound silly, but there aren't many like that in the UK.
Due to it not being very busy the night we stayed, our room was gratefully and unexpectedly upgraded to the Tasman too, which I presume was bigger than the other one we were originally supposed to be in, had a spacious ensuite wet room and a great view over the gardens and shoreline beyond via a balcony.
I feel awful that I have forgotten the names of the couple who run the place (I am so sorry!), but they really made us feel welcome, showed us around when we checked in early to drop our bags off, and then chatted to us in the morning giving us all the local info we needed.
The room was well decorated, light and airy. It was pretty big even though the attached pictures may not show it, and a pleasant amount of natural light came through in the morning whilst lazing in that bug comfy bed.
There aren't wetrooms in the UK like there are in Australia and New Zealand, so don't be alarmed when the floor gets covered in water very quickly. Shower had good power and was nice and hot.
Breakfast is purely continental which works well. A range of cereals, toast, tea/coffee and fruit all laid out and ready to go.
Overall, we really enjoyed this place. It was a very last minute find as we were booking the day after leaving Punakaiki further up the West Coast. The last place we stayed before driving back across South Island to Christchurch.
I don't know when I will return; New Zealand is so very far from home, but I know where to look when I'm back.

See you again in the future!

Upon our arrival we were greeted by our hosts Doreen and Geoff, then given a tour of their establishment and shown to our room. Our room had a fantastic view of the gardens and ocean and all the amenities you would ever need. Our room was scrupulously clean and pre warmed prior to our arrival, a nice touch on a cool day in mid winter. The bed would be one of the best I have ever slept in.
This accommodation is inclusive of breakfast and what a breakfast it was. Substantial portions of fresh fruit, including what I would have considered as 'out of season' fruit, yoghurt, selections of breads for toast, jams and spreads. The presentation was exquisite, as was everything about the lodge. This truely reflects our hosts as we were made to feel most welcome and given lots of suggestions as to what to do and see of the surrounding area during our short stay.
My suggestion would be to stay at least 2 nights in order to do justice to Hokitika and the West Coast.

This place is a hidden gem. We stopped for lunch at Kapitea Lodge on our way down the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The food was spectacular and the views from the outdoor patio were gorgeous. Plus the team at the lodge was very welcoming...and the home baked breads were fresh from the oven and dreamy! Be sure to spend a few minutes exploring the gorgeous gardens.

The lodge does accommodate overnight guests and seems like a perfect place to enjoy some time on the journey up or down the Island.

We booked in to kapitea lodge after previous accomodation fell through and were very glad we did! The hosts could not have done more for us. I’ve travelled a bit but these two were the friendliest hosts I’ve ever met (without being over the top). The room was super clean and bathroom delightful with a large bath. The grounds were lovely and view spectacular.
Continental breakfast was included and we got to meet some other folk to share a laugh with.
If you want a lovely place to stay with some great west coast hospitality, go stay here. 10/10

Stopped for lunch here as part of our fantastic Backroads hiking tour. I would use the word beautiful repeatedly - for the views of the Tazman sea, for the gardens on the property, and the setting for our lunch. The food was delicious - lots of great vegetarian items - loved the beet salads best.
The owners/staff were very warm and welcoming, I had a peak at a room - immaculate and nicely decorated.

We had stopped here for lunch which was excellent on our planned route to Franz Joseph. However a cyclone changed our plans as later in the day the bridge we would have to cross to the glacier was washed out. Fortunately our tour guides knew of Kapitea Lodge from previous travels and how lucky we were that they were able to accommodate us with 4 rooms. We had no where to go due to the weather and road conditions- we felt like we had been taken in. The rooms were clean, neat, well kept and quite comfortable as storms raged throughout the night. In the early evening, they served us an amazing appetizer spread. Morning breakfast consisted of coffee, juices, cereals and choice of eggs. There is in room coffee and tea. The grounds and garden areas are lovely. It is a lovely place to catch your breath and be cared for by gracious hosts. We can’t thank you enough for your help and hospitality.
