I found the Pioneer excellent value for money. The room had been nicely done up with some nice touches. I find it useful having a sink in a room when you have shared facilities. The host was helpful with storing my bike (which I was travelling on). My only issue was the level of noise from guests in other rooms and the hallway. It might be good to make guests aware to be conscious and considerate of this.

Cool place to stay while cycling. We saw it from the West Coast Wilderness trail as we came into Hokitika - it looked freshly painted and well maintained. Information Centre suggested we stay - so glad they did. This place is so clean, fresh, well thought out for guests. We had beer in the garden and nice meal in the pub. The pub seems to serve locals and has a nice feel. This accomodation shows great hospitality and I wish more were like this. Kitchenette was appreciated, as was lovely hot showers. Our bikes were stored safely. Highly recommend - reasonable priced . Our best stay on our trip.

This is a local pub a little off the main town area on Gibson quay but it was delightful. We were seated in a room off the main bar for our meal but we were well looked after. The staff were very friendly and delivered prompt service. Our entree of garlic bread was a good choice as was the chicken schnitzel served with chips and coleslaw. Our motelier recommended this pub and provided a voucher for 15% off our meals so not only was it a lovely meal but also inexpensive. The bar area was full of locals and had a nice vibe.

Hotel was recommended by BnB Host.. Greeted with a huge welcome when we entered, and shown to a table with menu.. drink order taken at table and brought over (bar tab set up). Drinks were frosty cold and meals came out quickly when ordered.. had the Orange Roughy fish and chips and the seafood chowder ($18). simple pub meals done exceptional.. the chowder was full of hearty pieces of mixed seafood.

We were recommended this place by the Motel we were staying at when we did the Cycling tour. It was good for a couple of beers and a large, hot meal which was tasty, well priced and good value. Just what we needed. Thank you.

+ Nice room, comfy bed, easy to walk to the main part of town, lots of free car parking. Bar on site was good and did evening meals. Small kitchen area which was useful.
- Too much noise between the rooms, some people arrived late and others left early, if the soundproofing was better my score would have been higher

This is a proper pub, with a good range of drinks and seating. The super friendly staff serve huge cheap yummy meals. It is not in the main part of town, but they have a courtesy van that can pick you and drop you off - on the night we were there the driver was the same friendly person (Kim) who served our drinks and food - love that!

We stayed two blocks away at the Stopforth Hotel and the restaurant at the Pioneer Hotel was highly recommended.
Very friendly and welcoming wait staff.
Excellent Seafood Chowder, thick and creamy with fresh seafood and served with garlic bread. Also delicious was the lightly battered fried fish.
We were delighted to have found such a gem within walking distant from our hotel!

Old school pub with good, simple food, well priced. We had delicious chowder and fish of the day having been warned of a 40 minute wait for the meal but we were happy to sit and watch the locals playing pool and having a few beers. Friendly staff, clean premises, a little bit hidden away from the main street but search it out. We'd be happy to visit again.

We ate at the Pioneer Hotel on the recommendation of our B&B host. It was an excellent choice. While the menu was limited due to a recent food fair in the town, there were still plenty of options. The food was very good, both I terms of quality and quantity. Good service too. Thanks:)

We have recently started on the Weekend Luncheon Option. Our lunch menu is available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday's from 11.30am to 2.30pm every week. Evening Dining is 7 nights a week from 5pm onwards also.
