Detailed Reviews
Great hotel with tidy and comfortable rooms and nice shared kitchen for people staying. Plus a fantastic Sunday Roast! Best part though was the west coast hospitality - from both the people working and the locals themselves. Only possible downside was it is close to the road and so noise could be an issue, I did have earplugs though so I was all good.

We wanted the true Kiwi hotel/tavern experience and got it! Our room was comfortable, the kitchen facilities excellent and the guest lounge is a good place to relax if you don't want to join the bar scene. But we did, and had a great time meeting some of the locals during happy hour. The Kaniere Empire's cheaper than most places in Hokitika and on route to the beautiful gorge. Good budget accommodation with friendly and accommodating owners.

I checked in this hotel today. The room was not expensive so obviously had shared toilet and of course shared kitchen. I was amazed how clean and managed was the shared kitchen, shared toilets and common lounge room. Very comfortable room and comfortable bed. I am very happy with the staff/owner, very very friendly. Has a bar so you can have fun there. I am satisfied with my stay at this hotel. 😮 😎

We stayed at the Kaniere for the Hokitika Wild Food Festival, and although it's a bit out of town, the staff ferried us all there and back no problem. The hotel itself is pretty basic, but with decent facilities, comfy beds, pretty clean, and the bar serves decent food and a good range of drinks - and it's relatively good value for money.

Stayed one night at the Empire Hotel on a recent West Coast trip. Room was clean and tidy and included a handbasin. Shared bathrooms/toilets were down the hall and were clean and modern.Checkin was straightforward with the friendly barman who let me park out the back which made offloading luggage a breeze.
The rooms are right next to the bar which is good if you want a drink or some food. I took advantage of the Friday night burger deal (free fries with every burger. Score!). Was a quiet Friday night so I didn't hear much noise but it might be different if a band was playing or the pub had an event on.
I spent time hanging out in the guest TV lounge with couches, dining table, magazines to read and large TV.
There were useful kitchen facilities to make breakfast in the morning (toaster, plates, cutlery etc) and good range of tea and coffee to set me up for the day.
This is an older style pub that's been modernised. Great to see them making a go of it. I recommend giving the Empire a look if you're after somewhere cheaper to stay close to Lake Kaniere and the Hokitika Gorge road.

I was on a motorcycle holiday in the South Island and travelling on a budget. I found this place on the web booked a bed, ended up with my own room for the same price. This is an old West Coast country pub on the outskirts of Hokitika. Beds were comfortable, rooms clean and there was ample tea and coffee available.
The hotel had washing machine soap powder and dryer available for a small fee. Evening meals were available at very reasonable prices. Bar opened at around 4pm and the locals and staff were welcoming. I enjoyed this stop over and will do it again. No need to spend a fortune on accommodation and meals when this good old fashioned country hospitality is available

I hopped off the Stray Bus in Hokitika to do a bit of jade carving but my last minute planning style had me looking a long way out of town for accom on the weekend.
Just up the river in Kaniere, The Empire is a hidden gem. Well out of reach of most of the tourists and holiday makers, the bar and dining area hosts a lively bunch of locals for happy hour. They have name tags written on jade and they're laughing around the bar, as I eat the Sunday Special prepared in house - a plate of delicious roast lamb and traditional veg - with a jug for 30 bucks?! Can't beat it.
The hosts, Grant and Debbie, even helped me resolve a booking issue caused by a third party site. They're friendly, and accommodating. The rooms are clean and comfortable. All things considered, I'll be sad to move back in to the backpacker's tomorrow.
Thanks for a great stay!

I hobbled in to the hotel on crutches straight into a gaggle of locals at a tall pub table.... a voice asked "how did you do that?".... I replied "I can't remember".... which seemed to make me an instant local!!!! Everyone in this pub was a real character... I only wished we'd had longer to get to know a few of them.
We stayed for a meal from their menu and blackboard.... Our meals were Seafood chowder (yum!), Seafood Basket (fried, but nicely done), Thai Red Chicken Curry (plates completely cleaned, so assume it was delish).
What can I say? We all 4 of us really recommend this local gem.

Absolutely worth the visit.
I asked for a menu, the. Lovely lady replied, it's in my head.
Then She recited a very simple menu.
How do you want your steak, I replied medium rare.
Oh she said not sure about that,I'll give it a go.
Great pub meal $25.00 and an atmosphere hard to find in a modern world.
A must do.
