Staying at Formally the Blackball Hilton, with some guests even hearing the Great Spotted Kiwi from their very comfortable beds and nice linen was a good experience.
Hosting here being West Coast hospitality to the max and evening dinner superb:
Whitebait in a crisp filo basket appetiser followed by delectable, warm, medium rare lamb for the 76year old birthday boy and sumptuous salmon for me. Both main dishes were accompanied by generous and attractively served fresh salads, just what was needed after two nights of dehy!
Wouldn't have missed this fascinating and historic place for the world.

Stopped in for lunch. Great welcome, very relaxed and friendly staff. A bit like visiting friends. Food is simple but plentiful, well cooked, flavorsome and a fair price. The building and decor is a comfortable piece of history. Can't wait to go back.

We had not been here for many years and it has not changed, the owners changed but the interior is just the same and a pleasure to look at. It's worth the trip as Blackball is quite unusual. There is another cafe (now run by the previous owner of this establishment) a lovely supermarket with an old coal stove and friendly owner and of course you can buy the famous Blackball salary and other sausages at the local butcher shop.

I have stayed at the FBH on several occasions over the past 20 years, and liked it a lot. It has an old time atmosphere, and I wanted to take my friends, This stay, however, was the worst by a long shot. Cynthia the manager, whom I had not met previously, was rude. She needs to get out of Hospitality. She kept repeating that she was in the middle of moving to another house down the road. Perhaps this was increasing her stress levels.

After checking in, we were asked to choose a time for dinner, but in fact had no choice but to take a late slot. (We had not been told we would need to book, when we had made our phone booking weeks earlier.) When we got to the busy dining area, we found we had to sit in an adjacent room, which was noticeably cooler than the main area, which had a fire. However, the meals came quickly, and were tasty. After dinner, we had a discussion with 3 other guests about doing the Paparoa track. It turned out that these older men were about to use e-bikes on the track, in order to do the whole trail in one day. E-bikes are not allowed on the track. But when I pointed this out, the trio stated they would not have them turned on... Cynthia then defended them, declaring it was all Forest and Bird's fault that e-bikes weren't allowed on the track. When I mentioned that my partner and I had found it challenging, as walkers, sharing the track with young male bikers intent on cycling the track in one day, Cynthia said that we ought to have complained to DOC Greymouth, and it was our fault if we had simply discussed our experience with the hut warden! Cynthia then let these men have an early breakfast at 7am, but locked the dining room door so we couldn't access it. Later, I went to check out, and asked if I could use my Gold Card to get a 10% discount. Cynthia said sternly Come Here! and marched into the hallway, where a sign stated you had to present your gold card on checking in. Backing down on the gold card issue, I paid with my Visa, choosing to sign the receipt. She then berated me for not using the PIN option! I will not be going back to the Blackball Hilton while Cynthia is in charge.

I was excited at the prospect of staying at this old hotel. Our previous visit to Blackball was just a day trip.

I grew up in Mangawhai, Northland NZ. The parents of a primary school friend owned the old local hotel and I went to her birthday party there (in the living quarters at the back). It was somehow exciting to an 8 year old who lived on a farm.

I've since stayed at a few of these 'older' establishments in NZ and the vibe is usually a fun one. I was prepared for the lack of luxury. You meet the locals who share their stories. The memorabilia on display is interesting and the old photos and newspaper clippings on the walls tell you about the lives of previous residents in the town.

After arriving late afternoon we sat down for a drink and registered. While I didn't expect it to be five-star nothing prepared me for the rudeness of the woman who served us and she appeared to be in charge.

She was rude, snippy, had a grumpy manner and spoke down to both my partner and myself. It was as though she had had a bad day and more work tipped her over.

This carried over to the next morning during breakfast. After leaving, I was so insulted it actually ruined the rest of the day.

It's unfortunate this person has to be the 'front of house' as she must put people off ever returning. I won't stay there again. I've travelled extensively worldwide and have never been treated so poorly.

A great easy to get to location, fabulous hosts, great mingling with other guests who were happy to dine with us. The dining was well above standard, one of the best meals I've had, as was the variety of cooked brekkys. The rooms good, a feel of real NZ, but the history with this place is a must visit. The town is fascinating.

Basic but comfortable room, shared bathroom not so enjoyable. The water disappeared every time they used water in the kitchen. Hosts are aware and addressing the issue. The food was excellent, highly recommend the pistachio ice cream. Every one was extremely friendly and the local people made for good laughs and company.

Made a late booking to stay at Formerly the Blackball Hilton and arranged to have a meal upon our late arrival, This was warmly and easily organised by the staff. We had a lovely nights stay and really enjoyed our meal, the character of the place and the staff who were very helpful and great fun to deal with. Will definitely go back and would recommend to friends.

Blackball has played an important part in NZ history and this pub has been there through it all! Worth a detour and stopping in for a drink if you’re heading cross country - handily placed between Greymouth and Reefton.

Very old school pub. Perhaps as close to an old English pub that I’ve seen in NZ. Disappointingly, but not surprisingly on the Coast, beer selection is limited to Monteiths (and a couple of other beers from the DB stable).
