I have to start this review with a special note of the hostess who lives there with her pet. She is so active and has maintained the place, garden and rooms so nicely. Her husband, a handsome man in his probable 40's or 50's is very cool and friendly.

The house almost like a castle was bought by the couple years ago and is surrounded by small farm and Big garden. She has maintained the garden very nicely, with various kinda of flowering plants and shrub species. She holds a special taste in gardening. We shot a lot of pics at her garden.

The house has been maintained and interiors has been made very nicely. It tells a lot about the taste of the mistress :)

The rooms are well designed, maintained and comfortable. Decent, good and warm.

The breakfast spread was good and tasty but in our previous stays with other hosts of B&Bs felt varieties were less, nevertheless it was filling and tasty.

After breakfast we were in mood for clicking our couple pics at her garden and she had all the patience to oblige to our clicks for many pics!! She always has smile on face and ready to make your stay comfortable.

Highly recomended place!

As noted by previous reviews, this wonderful house is about 10 minutes outside of Greymouth. But that should not detract you from making this your first choice whilst touring the rugged and rustic West Coast of New Zealand.

Joy is an engaging and friendly host. She has an inexhaustible knowledge of the area's attractions and makes no secret she is proud and blissfully content she has made Greymouth her home. You'll eventually meet Crash, an enormous adorable Labrador, who will demand constant attention given half the chance.

The house is situated amongst the tranquil countryside which is also home to Joy's many farm animals. She'll happily introduce you to them but unfortunately the luxury of time did not permit us to do so on this occasion as we arrived quite late in the afternoon after a lengthy drive.

There is a nearby pub / restaurant (Hans) which Joy recommends as no evening meals are served at Chapel Hill. We dined there and, by all accounts, it seems enormously popular with Greymouth's residents. We also found the food to be to our liking and the locals made us feel very welcome. It's a mere 5 minutes away at the junction of the main State Highway and Rutherglen Road.

Joy's house could more likely be compared to a mansion and has great ambiance. It is totally spotless and very well equipped. We selected the King Room at the top of the first flight of stairs - and so should you.

Upon departure, Joy will ensure you don't leave hungry with a large New Zealand country style fry-up. For the more healthy conscious a continental style option is also available. But occasionally you need to remember you are on holiday and indulge yourself. Joy's cooked breakfast is certainly an indulgence and will negate the need for lunch all together.

We look forward to returning to Greymouth very soon to explore the delights of the West Coast at greater length and will certainly make our return to Chapel Hill without hesitation.

Stayed here for 2 nights December 2011. The house is surrounded by pretty rainforests and trees, and there are paths out the back to explore. Joy, the host, was friendly enough although a little melancholic about the b&b business, occasionally giving the sense that she didn't really want to be there- which was a little off-putting. Having come home late one evening without having eaten, we were shown around the veggie garden, and when we politely declined feeding the sheep, we received a snipey comment about how it would only take a minute (it felt snipey anyway, although I was hungry and tired at the time).
The room was nice enough. Ours, the queen room, had a shower ensuite, but the toilet was separately out in the hall. the view looked over a couple of trees and a field, and perhaps wasn't the most scenic of the options.
Breakfast was a good spread including cereals, toast with an assortment of jams, and eggs and bacon on toast. Joy brings out all the toast etc- which we didn't eat, meaning it will go to the chickens. Maybe asking if we'd like some toast would lead to less waste?
About a 15 minute drive from Greymouth, the b&b is lovely and quiet with no traffic noise, just birds singing. But perhaps for the experience to be truly enjoyable, you need to have a certain personality to get along well with the host.

My partner and I stayed at the Chapel Hill B&B this Dec 2010. Both Joy and John ( and Crash the dog) were very hospitable and welcoming, paying attention to detail of all our possible needs. The house is kept very clean and is set in a lush garden, nestled between native wetland and farmland. The house itself is situated 15 mins drive from Greymouth itself but affords a great change of scenery from all the main road motels along the West Coast. This was both our first experience with B&B and we both found it refreshing and a great way to meet travellors alike.

This was even further from Greymouth than we expected. If you are interested in animals it will suit you but it was not our sort of place. Nothing wrong with anything - the room was fine and the breakfast good - all exactly as described. Did not even bother to ask about wifi.

We were passing through Greymouth in a bit of a hurry since we were trying to see the entire west coast. The hostess Joy seemed a bit impatient with us, though it is reasonable to note that she does get up very early to make breakfast. Didn't see the host much. Breakfast was good. The house is old and looks like it was built in several stages. Our room (the Green Room) was accessed via a bridge, which made it sort of interesting. This B&B is NOT near to Greymouth or near a major road.

Lucky to be able to return to see Joy and Crash. ( John again away ).Its been said before this is a most unusual designed House with Character. Lovely wood burning stoves. Fortunately for us Joy was having friends over for Dinner,so we joined them. ( Like to think its special for returning Guests ) Had a wonderful evening and got to know more about life in New Zealand. ( as well as a nice drop of wine ) Poor Crash was suffering with a bad back, it still managed to wag its tail, its such a friendly dog.
Thank you Joy for a lovely welcome.

Our family of 5 adults stayed for a night at the end of 2011 sometime after Christmas. We were warmly welcomed by Joy and Crash and after an excellent meal at a nearby restaurant recommended by Joy we were shown around her beautiful garden. We loved the beautiful flowers, plants and trees in her garden and were very impressed with her knowledge of them. My parents and uncle were all plant lovers and they were really wowed by the garden. Joy was the most gracious hostess and her breakfast was one of the best we had in New Zealand. Chapel hill is definitely the place to stay if are touring the west coast of the south island of New Zealand.

This B&B is a little out of the way, but a very pleasnt quiet place, and we thoroughly recommend it. Joy our hostess was great. Soon after we arrived she gave us all a tour of her lovely rainforest garden, which she puts a lot of time and effort into. We met the farm animals, and in the evening sat down for a leisurely chat with Joy. The breakfast was first class, and we went away full and content. The only trouble we found the shower a little difficult to get right. Loved the large bath sheet towels,in most places you stay they are too small.
