We had only 1 night here as we were catching the Trans Alpine from Greymouth which was a shame. Sharon greeted us warmly on arrival and showed us to a newly built alpine lodge, divided into two units. The decor was clean, modern, spacious but with homely touches and a personalised welcome message was on the table. There was a living/dining/kitchen area, lovely bathroom and separate bedroom with plenty of storage space. There are also a king size bedroom & twin room in the house, $10 more). Sharon and Michael have a small 'farmlet' with resident dog, pig, sheep and chickens so children would be quite at home here. (Also tennis court (free), Sharon is an ex NZ champion). It was the first day of the Coast to Coast race when we were there and despite being a full 9 months pregnant and fully booked, Sharon was still smiling. The price included breakfast and we were invited to the house to share a home cooked feast with the people staying in the house. Great company, fantastic food and yes, we would definately go back. We managed to fit in walk on the beach (10 mins away), a visit to the glow worm caves (20 mins) and the next morning, Pancake rocks (3/4 hour). There is plenty to do in the area and it is well worth staying a couple of days at least - it's 2 hours to the glaciers and 10 mins from Greymouth.

We had a great stay here during our trip to NZ. We stopped in for just one night but really enjoyed the quiet, peaceful surroundings. Breakfast was wonderful and Sharon gave us some awesome tips for sights and attractions for later on in our journey to the southern part of the island. Highly recommend staying here on your way through the Greymouth area.

We only had a short overnight stay at the New River Bluegums, booking very last minute. We realised how lucky we were to have discovered it. We arrived in the evening to a warm welcome by Sharon who directed us to a lovely walk to the seaside well equipped with delicious homemade brownies. The coast there is beautiful, wild and empty. Sharon also gave us a good restaurant recommendation at the Recreation Hotel which did not appear in any guide books. Harry cooked us a lovely big breakfast in the morning and we set off with a number of great suggestions for further adventures on the West Coast - best local helicopter ride, treetop walks etc. It was just very pleasant to be able to have a conversation with, and find out just a little bit about life on the West Coast of the South Island. Though we are having a great trip, most of the hotels/motels seem to be staffed by temporary foreign help, so it is hard to actually learn anything about local life. New River Bluegums was a great exception - think we will try all homestays next time. We stayed in the guestroom in the main house, very nice room with beautiful bathroom. Thank you very much Sharon, Michael and Harry (future national sports star).

We stayed there for one night in February. Due to the very good reviews here we booked and paid 170NZ$ long in advance. We cannot express how disappointed we were.
The welcoming was nothing as described in the web site. We only received a small nylon bag with some frozen brownies…
The location is terrible. They say it's in Greymouth but actually you need to drive approximately 25 minutes to get from there to the center of Greymouth.
But that was really the good part. We were assigned the Tui Room (never order this room!!!), which located in the family living room. Don’t fall for the pictures in the website, there is no picture of this room there (the Tui Room. We had almost no privacy in this room (the room doesn’t even have its one key). The ensuite toilet has a large transparent window which allows anyone on the yard to look inside your bathroom. We had to cover it with our coats to be able to take a shower or use the toilet. In contrast to what written in the web page, there are no tea or coffe facilities in the room (only in the house kitchen). The room itself is quite small and smelly (see ahead why). When we were in Greymouth we actually checked out three other places which had vacancy and were much cheaper, much nicer, and located in the center of the city.
They also have a dog. We like animals and especially dogs but this one is a big smelly and hairy one. His smell and hair was all over the house and also in our room.
To be perfectly fair we will mentioned that they are nice people, the breakfast was a really good one and we had an internet access. But their web site definitely doesn't reflect what you will be getting.
To sum up: you can find much better, nicer and central places to stay for this price.

Response from newriverbluegums, Owner at New River Bluegums Bed & Breakfast Homestay
Responded 5 Mar 2012
Wow - after 14 years in the business, this is completely opposite to all reviews and comments we have received and the first of its kind and we feel requires response. Facts - the brownie is complimentary (recipe has gone all around the world), the whole kitchen in homestead is available for the Tui room use. The drive to Greymouth from our B & B is ten minutes. Coco is a friendly short-haired chocolate labrador who is not allowed in guest rooms. The bathroom window is opaque sandblasted and has a Tui design. There is a photo of Tui Room on Trip advisor taken by a happy guest. As with these guests, many people choose to stay in the Tui Room when the cottages are available. It is a great pity these guys did not mention to us their unhappiness, as we could have offered the cottage option and helped with their concerns or maybe found them a hotel in the centre of town and refunding. We sincerely hope the rest of their holiday in NZ met their expectations and was enjoyable.

We stayed in early March and were disappointed by the accomodations. We stayed in the Tui Room, which was smaller than we expected and not as clean as we would expect and there was no lock on the bedroom door. The "family room", which we had to walk thru to get to our bedroom, was cluttered with childrens toys as were the grounds outside. The pictures are not a true representation of what we received. The hosts were friendly and the breakfast just fine but we felt it was overpriced for what we received. Perhaps staying in the cottages would have been a better option.

We stayed here on our 11 day road trip in Feb. I am sorry to say that this was the only B&B on our journey that I was disappointed in. We stayed in the house in the Tui Room. I guess I expect a B&B to be very clean. Between the mass amount of toys and cobwebs I did not feel that it was up to the standards I expected after reading all the wonderful reviews. I do have to say that the hosts Sharon and Michael were very nice and gave us good ideas of what to do in the area. The breakfast was fantastic. We met some very nice people at breakfast that all seemed delighted to be there. They were staying in the cottages. I have a hard time writing anything negative but would have appreciated knowing what we would find.

Beautiful place surrounded by incredible green land. The houses were well provided and very comfortable. Very warm welcome, animal and human.
A short walk from the New River Bluegums, 15 minutes more or less, takes you to an amazing and wild beach with the best sunset.

We stayed with Sharon, Michael and Harry for one night. Sharon made us very welcome with tea and cake. We stayed in the guest room which was adjacent to their lounge.Sharon gave us a substantial breakfast. It was a ten minute drive in to Greymouth to eat. Reasonable choice of restaurants. A delightful family.

When we arrived Sharon was waiting outside for us with a warm welcome to her home. We stayed in one of the two units that is separate from their house. Very peaceful and quiet. Our unit was a spacious one-bedroom apartment. The kitchen was great - the refrigerator even had brownies and beer waiting for us! We didn't cook that night but went to a restaurant Sharon suggested (Steamers Carvery - very good). After dinner went to Cameron's Beach (another suggestion of Sharon's) and enjoyed a fantastic sunset on a deserted beach. We were the only ones on the long, beautiful beach until a man rode up on his quad to exercise his three dogs. Enjoyed watching them as they disappeared running on the picturesque beach. The next morning had a wonderful breakfast with Sharon and her son Harry (a Detroit Lions fan!). Her homemade fruit/chocolate chip muffins are to die-for. Wish we could have spent more time here.

We stayed here for one night, it has a one bedroom apartment with a sofa converting to a double bed which I told was a bit uncomfortable, the shower room would suit a invalid, the shower room was a wet room shower, which was very modern, and in the morning the owner came over with a tray full of breakfast which was very nice.

I hope that Sharon answers...they have little cottages which would be perfect. What a great place to stay.
