Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Located just on the edge of Greymouth on the Southern side, this motel is very well presented with tasteful furniture and clean spacious rooms.
Reception is located next door in an adjoining hotel, but was quick and efficient. Rooms are all on the ground level with ample parking and is set back off the road a little which reduces any noise to a minimum. A short walking distance away is a pub where we walked to for dinner.

It was a really lovely clean and quiet room with plenty of space to move around. there was a small kitchenette to make a basic meal, tea or coffee. The lady at the front counter when we checked in was friendly and helpful. The price was average for the area and was easily accessible from the road and local restaurants. The heaters worked well and kept the room warm all night. The room was nicely appointed.

Solo traveler that stayed for one night in Feb’24. Up to this point, Gables Motor Lodge is my favorite accommodation that I’ve stayed in.

The room was incredibly clean and they’ve made some updates making the room feel more modern. It did not have a standard air conditioner, but did have an InstaChill fan if needed or you can leave your windows open. The water pressure and temperature were perfect.

I enjoyed the area and walked around the neighborhood. The neighborhood is very clean, there is at least one restaurant/bar down the main road and a larger grocery store all within walking distance. Gables Motor Lodge is next door to High Park and shares one reception area. Parking is free, with limited spaces.

If you’re looking for a place to call home for a night or two, I definitely recommend adding Greymouth and Gables Motor Lodge as a stop to your list.

If you have an older motel to run and are smart you keep it scrupulously clean and updated and focus on great hospitality and service. That’s what The Gables does and we loved it. Close to a supermarket, on the highway but quiet, and small touches (like home-baked cookies) make all the difference. Recommended.

We enjoyed our stay here. The 1 and 2 BR suites are perfect for families. I noticed that most of the Greymouth hotels are quite similar in appearance and price range. There is not a lot to do in town and so I wouldn't recommend staying too many days. The couple who runs this hotel is exceptionally friendly. We really appreciated the owner helping us strap backpacks to the top of our rental car - and even giving us a cable!

Nice place to stay with everything you need. A free morning paper was great and efforts made to keep the 1 bedroom accommodation cool (it was very hot when we were there) was appreciated. Comfortable sofa too. My advice to travellers is to not eat next door as was recommended to us. It is overpriced and I received my starter and main at the same time!

Perfect location for our Zephyr car club group (ZZOC from the central region in North Island) visit to Greymouth & west coast region. Had 2 nights here. Plenty to see and do between Greymouth and Hokitika, too. The units/rooms are all well appointed. And so clean. Serviced daily. Friendly & welcoming staff. Old fashioned hospitality right down to homemade cookies provided each day (made by owners mother). Delicious shortbread or peanut brownie. Close to supermarket - easy walk. And also just a few steps from a fabulous bar and restaurant - Buccleugh’s. Absolutely recommend.

As motels go this is pretty good. We booked last minute directly with the owners and could not have been more helpful. Good hints on what to do and where to eat.
Useful base for heading South but is on the main highway

Well located close to the Recreation Hotel and supermarkets.

The unit are always very clean and indeed well maintained. BBQ area and very well kept grounds.

Very proactive owners who own Gables and the Assure next door.

Hightly recommended.

We had a rental car at the end of our trip in Greymouth and returned it to the station just before we caught the train. I would suggest its to far to walk with luggage. No idea what a taxi would cost.
