If you love the ocean or the beach, this is definitely a place to stay. The decorations are all related to the ocean and the beach , which is my favourite. Even the linen are about the sea! $27 They provide a nice soap and towels! Free breakfast Free internet, really big common room and dvd lounge! Apart from the furnace in the common room is nice and warm, other parts of the house is a bit chilly. Our dorm bedroom have some wind leaked in just because the building is too old and they don't have curtains. Just remember to grab an extra blanket from them so that you won't be cold to death! Views are good from the balcony though, overall a nice place to stay in!

I found Neptune through BBH and decided to stay even though it had a low score and I'm glad I did. The backpacker has all the facilities promised (FREE WIFI, SCONES, etc.) and on top of that the manager (Amy) and the working girls where very helpfull. The Backpacker is an old hotel and you still have the feeling there. The facilities were kept clean and the kitchen had all the necessities. I enjoyed my stay there and will visit again if I make it back to Greymouth. Some of the interior is a bit worn and it is a small walk to the centre and that is the sole reason for why it did not achieve 5 stars.

Travelling on a hop-on-hop-off coach tour is a good way to get tips of places to see and places to stay. We were told how great this hostel was by one driver, and then how terribly awful it was by another. We weren't really sure what to expect. What we got was perfectly 'ok' - hence the average rating. The place is in dire need of a refurbishment. It is clean, but on a daily basis they are polishing a turd. The hostel has the potential to be one of the best in terms of it's facilities, but instead it is just dingy. The staff were friendly, the building was warm, the kitchen was large and well equipped, the lounge area has so much potential for being awesome with its huge couches and pool table and dart board. The chimney falling off the roof over night, the bathroom door not working, the back garden full of junk (reminding me of the scene with Steve Buscemi and the little girl in Con Air).

A very curious place. One that I would not choose again, but one that given no choice would be just about ok with... There are better places to stay in Greymouth.

The whole building is ugly and unpleasant to be in, made me feel really uncomfortable. Such a weird vibe, felt odd - it's a bit like The Shining. Felt depressed. The staff were friendly though and did their best. Sadly I got bed bugs there - there were tonnes of them so they must have been there a while - I did point it out to them so hopefully they've got rid of them by now. Having said this the place was at least clean and the dorm rooms were comfortable enough to sleep in.

Website and flyers promise a lot of things they simply do not have: A spa pool, free bikes, free coffee, tea and spices, free bikes, free bakery goods etc. Yard is full of old stuff and if you want to camp you can build your tent right in the carpark - lovely! The rooms aren't any better, if you're lucky you get clean linen and have a working lamp. Staff consists of backpackers who work 3 hours a day without a boss around - so nobody knows anything. Reservations go missing constantly. If you decide to stay longer than one night you can at least get used to the smell... I wouldn't recommend it to anybody who appreciates at least a little cleanliness in a kitchen or bathroom (or light in a toilet...).

That last review sums it up quite well really. Relatively clean but dingy and in dire need of some attention. No chimney falling off the roof in the night, just a burst water pipe in the ceiling that flooded the kitchen! Back yard full of junk. Threadbare linen and carpet. True, the staff were friendly and the kitchen was large and well equipped but if I was to choose again I would choose differently.

Greymouth is a depressing enough place without staying here. My advice, don't go to Greymouth. If you DO have to go go there, treat yourself to somewhere decent!

This place was formerly an old pub/hotel and feels like it has been preserved in time, ghosts and all! Old dark corridors, Victorian mental institution bathrooms, strange people lurking around, damp and draughty, the common room used to be the old bar and feels oppressive. The kitchen is dreadful, one of the worst I have seen in any hostel. Far too small, always dirty and not nearly enough equipment for a hostel of its size.

The staff were lazy, uninterested and sometimes rude. On two occasions when I went to reception the boy there stopped me mid enquiry to do something else. The owner Steve seemed ok in our dealing with him, but come on Steve, sort this place out!

Are there any goods points? Well, the double room we had was not too bad, with a little sink and TV that did not work. There is also free wi-fi.

We felt depressed after our time there!

As the other recent reviews noted, this backpackers is not very nice. I like old buildings, and it could be simple and charming, but it's not. The ceiling sagged in parts, the showers are cramped and unclean. Everything felt unclean.

To top that off, a worker mentioned that he couldn't move to Around Mot or Nelson because of "the transients". He's a father, you see, and those 'transients' would be a threat to his child, My boyfriend explained this was the man being racist, as people travelled there for fruit picking. Bit stupid to run a backpackers and fear 'transients', right?

That is the nice way of putting it. We arrived here at a time when the owner had left and it was in the hands of the man we met. He was very helpful, but did not seem like he wanted to be in charge of a hostel. To be fair to him, he ran it nevertheless. The hostel itself was messy, the lounge was just a storage space, many of the kitchen's appliances did not work and was overflowing when we were there. There was a huge DVD collection and our room did have a tv capable of playing them though. It was a place to rest between journeys, but I would not stay here longer. I hope that it does get better though, it's a unique building and could be a great hostel.

We stayed here during our visit for the hokitika wild foods fest because most places in hokitika were booked or too expensive.

We chose to pay a little extra to have a private room, but weren't expecting much based on previous reviews. The place was pretty run down, and I'm not entirely convinced the sheets were clean. The duvet was falling out of the cover, which I doubt had been washed since previous guests. The whole place had a strong smell, but mostly because it was an old building. The showers were cringeworthy, but had consistent hot water. The lounge area was reasonable, but the internet service is shotty if too many people are using it. It also seemed to only work in the public lounge areas. There was a bar, so you aren't allowed to bring in your own alcoholic beverages, but I never saw anyone available to serve. I never used the kitchen facilities, but they seemed adequate.

It was close enough to walk to anything in greymouth, but overall pretty dingy and disappointing.

"ehm. I stayed in room 5, which is quite small. But I heard that room 4 is the smallest one and they only use it when they are no others left. I haven't stayed in any other room in Neptunes, so I can't compare it whith my room. Room 5 has no sink or private toilet, there are 6 beds in it and it's quite difficult to find enough space for all 6 backpacks..."
