The Copthorne Hotel Greymouth is often described as a hidden gem, offering a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere that belies its unassuming exterior. Guests have called out the hotel's staff for their exceptional service, contributing to a warm stay. Cleanliness is a strong suit, with particular praise for the spotless bathrooms and inviting beds.
While rooms are generally found to be clean and comfortable, a few guests noted they could be on the smaller side or show signs of age. The hotel's amenities, especially the powerful showers, are popular among travelers, although some suggest the patio could use improvement. Opinions on value vary, with some guests finding the dining options reasonably priced, while others feel the cost does not match the quality.

Having read some of the bad reviews about this hotel, it is my opinion that they were unfair and exaggerated. Copthorne Hotel might not have an A/C but the rooms do have portable fans. There is a small passage between the one bed and doorway but there are TWO double beds in the room with very good linen. The bathroom may be small. It it is more than adequate for anyone’s needs but might not be wheelchair friendly. Maybe a bigger patio would be welcomed so that we could savour the views of the river and the old/new town. The service and the food at the restaurant called Jimmy Cook’s was as good as it gets. Between the 4 of us we had 6 items off the menu which we enjoy Shakir g with each other. Delicious! Mel was the most gracious and friendly food assistant who advised us on selections to ensure we did not order too much or too little. Accolades to her. My one gripe and this is for ALL hotels and motels is the lack of cupboard space. Clothes need place to air when on long trips and this cannot be accomplished lying in suitcases. So well done to Copthorne Hotel.

This hotel is very dated and in need of plenty of maintenance to bring it up to a respectable standard. See photos. The location is great, very central and you can walk in 5 minutes to anywhere in the CBD. Beds are comfortable. The shower plumbing needs some attention as the water flow out of the shower is less than than input, so there is a build up of water in the shower base which would overflow if you stayed in the shower too long.

As you approach the Copthorne Hotel in Greymouth - you can’t miss it as it’s the tallest building in town) - the tired facade (painted grey!) doesn’t do the hotel any favours. Nor do the creaks and groans the lift made on the way up to the 6th floor! My room was well appointed with TWO double beds. I’ve never been a fan of open hanging spaces rather than cupboards. And they could do with replacing the wooden windowsill which was riddled with woodworm holes. I enjoyed a good evening meal (huge position of fish & chips) but charging $14 for 12oz of IPA is daylight robbery - that’s the equivalent of £9.30 a pint, for a locally brewed beer - their justification “we’re a fine dining establishment” . . . . really? Otherwise, super friendly and helpful staff.

The Copthorne Hotel is centrally located in Greymouth. After collecting our hire vehicle from Greymouth train station, my husband and I were permitted to check in around 2pm and off load our luggage. Our room was on the 5th floor with a northerly view up the river. The room was large and the fitout provided room for two bags with open hanging above. Bed was comfortable. The bathroom was modern and shower hot. An A la carte breakfast was included with our accommodation, which was well presented and delicious. Would stay here again if visiting Greymouth.

We had a lovely stay at the Copthorne. The staff were super friendly and inviting. When booking we did something to get a free gift on arrival and we got a beautiful bottle of wine, it was such a suprise! The room was huge and nice and clean. Interestingly there was no air con, just a heater and a fan, but the fan did the trick as it was a bit hot. The bathroom was lovely and it was super handy having 2 sinks. The hotel is in a great location with an easy walk up town and we had perfect views over the river. The best part which is super unique is that they had a little gift of a duck to take with you on your adventures to take photos of. I love that idea and would be interested to know if they have them at their other hotels

On our arrival we were made to feel very welcome. The reception staff were very helpful giving us advice on places to eat locally for dinner. Rooms were very comfortable with a great view out of the window looking up (down?) river. Breakfast this morning was fabulous. I had perfectly cooked poached eggs and smoked salmon and my husband chose the continental selection which was a work of art, had a huge selection of fruit and pastries and was terrific value for money. The breakfast chef clearly takes enormous pride in their work - it was fabulous. Would definitely recommend.

This hotel was initially just an overnight stay we had booked whilst travelling around New Zealand but from arrival, it just kept on giving. What a little oasis The Copthorne Hotel turned out to be. Its staff, the food in the restaurant and the hospitality were outstanding . Not only did it provide a wonderful resting place to relax, unwind and recharge for the following day travelling but I accidentally left a valuable item there. They quickly parcelled the item up and had it sent to a hotel we were staying at a few days later so it was there on our arrival. A hotel with high standards of how it treats its guests.

We stayed at the hotel as part of a trip around New Zealand and wanted to stay somewhere we could take the TranzAlpine train the following day. The hotel is close to the river and has some good views from the higher floors facing the river. During check-in I realised I had a mistake with my booking but the reception staff quickly helped to resolve this. The hotel would be suited to both a business or leisure traveller. I found some of the communal areas of the hotel seemed dated but the rooms itself was clean, comfortable and well appointed with plenty of storage, flat screen TV with plenty of channels and fast free WiFi. The room included a comfortable bed and a large chair to relax. The bathroom was clean with good shower. We had breakfast in the hotel restaurant, Jimmy Cook's Kiwi Kitchen which is adjacent to the reception. The breakfast was very good with friendly service. For those travelling on the train you can store luggage at the hotel but we were told by hotel staff that luggage can be checked-in from 10am at the railway station. It is only a short flat walk from the hotel to station. Overall I was very happy with the hotel and the friendly service provided by the staff.

We received a warm and friendly welcome from the reception staff. The room was clean and fit for purpose with a very powerful shower. We ate in the hotel restaurant ( Jimmy Cooks ) where the superb food was matched by great service and enjoyed a quiet nights sleep.

Very basic small room. No book to the room for menu or local attractions. Charged an extra $200 when checking in ontop of room for $50 pernight fee for kids incase they break something. This was not stated on website, they said it will be refunded at the end. Not a happy experience 😕

Hi rachie07, thank you for your review, we appreciate all feedback and do try to improve our performance from it. We are currently working on an online compendium, I apologise that it was not in place for your stay. It is company policy to either ask for or pre-authorise a credit card for $50 an night, this is to cover any incidentals such as restaurant / bar charges, not because there were children in case they broke something. We allow children under 12 to stay free and if they dine, they do so at half price.
