Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed at the hotel as part of a trip around New Zealand and wanted to stay somewhere we could take the TranzAlpine train the following day. The hotel is close to the river and has some good views from the higher floors facing the river. During check-in I realised I had a mistake with my booking but the reception staff quickly helped to resolve this. The hotel would be suited to both a business or leisure traveller. I found some of the communal areas of the hotel seemed dated but the rooms itself was clean, comfortable and well appointed with plenty of storage, flat screen TV with plenty of channels and fast free WiFi. The room included a comfortable bed and a large chair to relax. The bathroom was clean with good shower. We had breakfast in the hotel restaurant, Jimmy Cook's Kiwi Kitchen which is adjacent to the reception. The breakfast was very good with friendly service. For those travelling on the train you can store luggage at the hotel but we were told by hotel staff that luggage can be checked-in from 10am at the railway station. It is only a short flat walk from the hotel to station. Overall I was very happy with the hotel and the friendly service provided by the staff.

Very comfortable room. Friendly staff Great shower, TV, coffee making facilities. We had a fantastic view from our room on the 3rd floor. We could see the Grey river and waves breaking at the river entrance from our bed. Air conditioning ?? We were able to open our door to the balcony for fresh air. Great place, I'd love to visit again

This hotel was booked as part of our package on the Transalpine railway. We had no difficulty in checking in to the hotel. The room was clean, comfortable and suited our overnight stay in Greymouth. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was delicious along with breakfast the next morning. All the staff we encountered were polite, friendly and helpful.

This hotel is very dated and in need of plenty of maintenance to bring it up to a respectable standard. See photos. The location is great, very central and you can walk in 5 minutes to anywhere in the CBD. Beds are comfortable. The shower plumbing needs some attention as the water flow out of the shower is less than than input, so there is a build up of water in the shower base which would overflow if you stayed in the shower too long.

What a lovely surprise! Greymouth is a small town and i was pleasantly surprised with my expperience at this hotel. Loved my room, the staff and the restaurant. It was the best cooked breakfast on my whole trip of more than 2 months. Dinners were delicious, too. Vintage architecture on the outside while totally up to date inside. So fun. The whole town was full of character.

Booked for 1 night stopover before trip on train. The Hotel looks old from outside but has been refurbished inside in most parts. Rooms restaurant reception all nice. We had dinner and breakfast which were both lovely and staff very friendly pleasant and helpful. However our room overlooked a building site which work started o from 7.30 am windows and balcony door not replaced and was draughty and noisy. Should have been replaced when rooms done. Handy for train station but not a lot to do I greymouth.

While our room looked recently remodeled, there were a few problems. The window in the bathroom (6th flr) would not close all the way, so the room stayed pretty cold. The water pressure was weak and in the middle of a warm shower, the freezing cold water would blast on --very startling to say the least. Bed was comfortable, room was clean.

Hi Kim H, I am sorry that the shower was not up to standard, the water pressure and consistent temperature is normally one of our strengths, we are investigating what is wrong and apologise for this. We currently have a building consent to replace all of the old window joinery with modern double glazing and air conditioning, this is due to start next year. Thank you for your feed back, have a safe journey.
