Mary made us feel quite welcome. We enjoyed talking with her a great deal about her life experiences, family and New Zealand. She helped us to understand some of New Zealand's history and issues. A great orientation to our visit to this amazing country! Fantastic breakfast too!

We stumbled across this place while looking for a place to spend the night. It's a top notch, somewhat old school b&b.

The owner is lovely. The rooms were all clean and well maintained. Would definitely stay again.

If you are on a budget, but still want a conveniently located, clean, homey place to stay that even includes breakfast, this is the place for you. Ardwyn House is only a couple of blocks from the restaurants and businesses of downtown Greymouth, but tucked away on a quiet hill, so you will sleep like a log.

The large old house with surrounding garden has been lovingly cared for. My room was cozy, warm, and from my window, I could even see the horizon as the sun was setting. There are two bathrooms to share with the other guests.

While Ardwyn House is easy walking distance to the terminus for the West Coast Shuttle and Tranz Alpine Railway Station, Ardwyn House owner and host, Mary, kindly picks up and drops off her guests, if required. She is a gem. I spent two nights here and enjoyed drinking tea, conversing and watching TV with her.

We had a great stay at Mary’s place who is a very friendly and considerate hostess - on top of she treated us to a fantastic breakfast. The beds are very comfy and we had a good view from our room. Highly recommendable!

We really enjoyed our stay with Mary at her beautiful historic home. She thought we might be a bit chilly when we arrived, as it was a rainy day, and had tea, cookies and a lovely fire going. The bedroom rooms are like my grandmother's house with a shared bathroom. She prepared a huge delicious breakfast the next morning that we're still talking about!

The gist of the reviews here are very accurate - this is like spending the night with your beloved grandmother. The rooms in the house have a genuine authentic charm, but a sleek and modern hotel chain experience it is not.

Mary, your host, is wonderful. Full of great stories, having raised four daughters and the widow of a local fisherman. She is indeed well-travelled, and a keen observer of global events. Breakfast was fantastic - a choice of continental or full, we ate eggs, bacon, toast, coffee, yogurt, fruit and muesli - more than enough fuel to hold us until dinner.

Bathroom facilities were shared with other guests, rooms (we stayed in the double) well appointed with a comfortable mattress and excellent bedding.

She will be closed Christmas season of 2016, as her entire family is staying warm with her for an extended period of time. Many blessings to you and yours, Mary, and thank you for the wonderful accommodation on our South Island west coast road trip.

Mary, the owner, is absolutely wonderful. Great to talk to and very friendly. Perfect for a B&B. Be advised that the bathroom is shared among all the guests. Rooms are a bit small and the house is drafty. Nonetheless, Mary made a brilliant brekkie and we learned a great deal about New Zealand. Perhaps best for a brief visit.

Without a doubt the best value and one of the most pleasant places we stayed on our trip around the South Island. I don't know how much longer Mary will keep her home open to the public, but if you get the chance, don't miss it. Beautiful, older style home on a quiet street run by a most gracious host. Great breakfast too.

It is very easy to accept that Ardwyn House is really a home and not a mini-hotel as are many current B&Bs. Mary Owen's house in its beautiful setting up the hill remains her home with all the evidence of it having been enjoyed by her now grown up family. She is prepared to share it with guests for a very reasonable price. On top of that she offers to greet you at the train station (for those who have arrived via the TranzAlpine), drive you about to see various points of interest in Greymouth, serve you tea and biscuits and engage you in fascinating conversation which includes anecdotes from her own widely-traveled and adventurous life. With our overnight stop in Greymouth we also hiked up the hill on a marked path behind her house to discover that the hill is really part of a ridge running along the coast. At the top there are magnificent views of Greymouth, the mouth of the Grey and the Tasman Sea to the west and the Grey River across the plain to the east. The next morning, before our return train journey to Christchurch, we walked through the suburb of Cobden on the north side of the Grey to enjoy the stunning views of the coastal mountains and the marshland that forms a delta for the Grey River.

Mary is a lovely host who's find solution if there's problem in a old old house... ;-) The equipment is rudimental but we have what we paid for... And in this city, i'm not sure that is easy ta find other place better.
