Detailed Reviews
I love staying here, Murray and Wendy are super friendly and excellent hosts. They really make me feel welcome and handle any requests with ease. The rooms are comfy
& have everything you need. Close to a supermarket and restaurants make the Sundowner's location great, heaps of off street parking too.

Hi Phillippar, Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to review your stay at the Sundowner Motel. We always enjoy having you stay when you are on a sales trip on the West Coast. We enjoy your bubbly personality and we look forward to having you stay again later in the month. Happy Easter and enjoy your break. Cheers Murray and Wendy.

The motel is just a short walk(or in our case bike ride) from the train station. The rooms are clean, efficient and very comfortable. We stayed here at the beginning and end of our cycle trip on the West Coast Wilderness trail. You can leave directly from the hotel and be on the trail in a few minutes. We had a room on the backside - no view- but it was quiet and an easy place to sort our bikes etc. The hosts are very welcoming and ready to answer questions and help you get what you need. We came back at the end of our trail ride because it worked so well.

Easily the best central accomodation in Greymouth. The rooms are spacious, clean, quiet, and comfortable. The difference between the Sundowner and the Breeze we stayed in last year is like night and day! We’ll be back for sure.

Comfortable quiet room. ..yep…double glazing. The owners really had gone to a lot of trouble to make the guests comfortable…nice soap and shampoo…large rooms with beautiful bathrooms. Free powder for washing machine.
Very close to information centre, countdown, subway, and the ware house were everyone gets a bargain and I managed to pick up a decent sun hat and some sun cream for the Paparoa track

This hotel presents as nothing special, but we had a lovely and comfortable stay. The rooms, bathroom and decor are quite dated, but are immaculately presented.
The location is slightly out of the CBD and whilst you can see a supermarket and variety store across the road, there is no (obvious) direct access, so you need a car to get about.
The location is quiet, but there is a bit of noise from neighbouring rooms, especially when the shower is running. When we turned off the light, there was a lot of light entering the room and we expected a disturbed night, but we were delighted that sometime around midnight they dimmed considerably so our sleep was quite good. I wish more motels would dim their external lighting as the night draws on.
The hosts were attentive and welcoming and we enjoyed some nice interaction with them.
This is a motel that's far from perfect, but where the positives far outweigh the negative. We would definitely recommend it and stay there again.

Wendy was really helpful on check in. She showed me a map with locations of places to eat in Greymouth and told me about the 10% off offer at monteith's, which we enjoyed. Wendy also looked up the tide times for the pancake rocks the next day which were spectacular. The model's location is perfect for the Tranzalpine train and walking into town. Room was very large and kitchenette well equipped. Plenty of parking.

We were met by Pauline at the railway station who drove us to the motel which was a stones throw away.
We were in an upstairs room with an elevated view - the owners were friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The unit was spotless with excellent shower pressure.

We stayed the night after coming across from Christchurch on the Trans Alpine train. (And that is such a wonderful trip in itself- thoroughly recommend it) Murray and Wendy are great hosts, friendly and helpful and able to point us towards interesting things to do around Greymouth while we were there. Their units are spotless, all our basic requirements were covered and the shower is amazing. Full on hot and abundant! Murray dropped us back to the train the next day and when my husband discovered he had left his jacket in the back of the car, Murray made it back down to the train station with said item of clothing, just before the train departed. He definitely went above and beyond expectations.

My wife and I were travelling from Christchurch and back on the Tranzalpine, a must for anyone exploring New Zealand, and we decided to do it over two days and stay overnight in Greymouth. The room is spotlessly clean, spacious and even comes with a basically equipped galley kitchen. Fresh milk is provied. None of that UHT muck. The lady on reception was ery welcoming and helpful. They supply umbrellas for use when it is raining.
