Tripadvisor gives a Travellers’ Choice award to accommodations, attractions and restaurants that consistently earn great reviews from travellers and are ranked within the top 10% of properties on Tripadvisor.
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
This a genuine old working pub. Everyone was friendly enough. Loud guys at the leaners talking race and politics. So if easily offended it may not be your cup of tea/pint of beer. Room was warm and comfortable. Though on the pricey side $140 - possible to get 4-star hotel for the same. Fish & chips served for dinner were ok but a again bit pricey for what you get (a bit of green might have helped). I’m still going to give a 4 because it is a real deal pub.

A real local pub. Friendly patrons and good atmosphere. Would have few more drink here- well priced too. The place was buzzing on a Saturday night with locals in for a few to chat and enjoy the All Blacks beating the Wallabies. All ages, including families.

It was 33 years since we where here last time. Much has changed since then but not on Union hotel. It's so nice to be back! Even the menu is same as it was 1985. Roast with gravy ! I think this is is one of the last genuin bars/pubs in NZ.

My brother a local and his partner took me out for lunch to the Union. The big yellow building looks lost on the street all by itself, but on stepping in it’s like stepping back to my childhood in the 1970’s. This is a family owned business now run by the original owners kids.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but as my brothers a local he’d not be going somewhere that wasn’t any good.
For $16 I got a small homemade style veggie soup and a small roast lamb roast, with lovely cooked cabbage, carrots and roasted spud. The lamb was amazing but I’d have had the larger one if I hadn’t finished breakfast. Honestly I’m going back it was that good.
When the establishment is popular with locals you know it’s a good thing.

Have taken the family here several times for dinner, mostly because Roast Pork is a favourite of mine. Unfortunately we were a little late this evening, and most of the roasts were gone, so I ended up with a pretty meagre serving of ham and veges. The ham was very dry and not at all pleasant, but the plate full of veges were a saving grace. Kids were happy with their chicken nuggets and chips, but as long as there is ice cream to follow they seem to be happy with anything that is served up.
Get in early (by 5:30?) if you want to enjoy the roasts of the day. They are good when you can get them.

Only went to the restaurant, the staff were amazing!! The food was not the usual small plates with microwaved food. It was very tasty, filling and big portions. If you are even just passing through Greymouth, it’s worth calling in. It’s a very warm friendly pub and restaurant.

We queued up for nearly half hour to order a meal. They were fairly busy however when we reached the counter we waited there for a further 5 mins while one staff member was dishing meals with no service. Another staff member was leaning on the counter drumming her fingers. They then tell us the only food available was a ham steak! It would have been far better customer service for the idle staff member to walk out and advise the queue that they had run out of food and roasts rather than let us wait ages first. Not impressed and I won’t be back.

Know this, the restaurant ain't modern, it ain't "trendy." But what is is an old school wham bam thank you Ma'am Carvery. Great food, great old school options eg meals with veges or salad and fries, Get in early to get your roasts, but plenty of other options including West Coast Turbot and the steaks are great. Inexpensive , good options for the kids and the complimenty vege soup with the mains is a must. No packet gravy and no packet soup. Old school.

Very basic, old-style carvery. Really outdated! Give it a miss! This place needs a complete overhual before I'd ever go again! There are many better options , even the fast food in town woud be preferable to this.
