Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Excellent Bed and Breakfast, room was comfortable and very clean. There was a shared lounge and shared kitchen both were pleasant. B n B offered a continental or cooked breakfast which was of a high standard. Would stay again if in Whangarei.

This is an amazing place with lovely views and we had a spacious room. The hosts are very friendly. Even though all the rooms downstairs were booked, we still had our privacy and didn’t hear any of the neighbours.
There are restaurants within walking distance.

We booked into Pentland for 5 nights in January 2016 and really enjoyed our stay. We were made feel welcome from the second we arrived. Bed was really comfortable and room was spacious. Great pressure in the shower for grimy travellers! Breakfast was cooked freshly each day by Roger and Bardy with fruits from their garden. Location is great and it's easy to find. Roger and Bardy are really good people and looked after us well. All the guests seemed happy and we certainly were. When we're back in Whangarei we'll stay here, no second thoughts about it. Highly recommended.

Found this B&B on-line and booked it even though there were no prior reviews on Trip Advisor. We were very pleased with it and wanted to be the first to submit a review. Roger was a great host. When I called to make the booking & told him we would be arriving on the bus, he immediately offered to pick us up from the bus stop. When we arrived, there he was waiting for us even though the bus was over half an hour late arriving. We were able to check into our room immediately and our arrival was 3+ hours before the posted check-in time. The room was comfortable and well appointed. The breakfast was a FULL English breakfast with eggs any style, beans, tomatoes, bacon, sausage, toast, fruit, yoghurt. Another guest was a vegetarian and accommodating her needs was not a problem for Roger. After one very pleasant night and breakfast at Pentland House, Roger then took us back to the bus stop for us to continue on our journey.

We were traveling as a couple with a friend so took 2 of the 3 rooms. Rooms were very comfortable and spaceous and Roger and Bardy are great hosts. (Ask to see his car in the basement - and all the other lovely things he makes!).

Has private entrance for guests which is handy if returning late at night. Lovely full breakfast in sunny dining room. Would stay again and recommend to friends. Good Thai restaurant 3 minute walk away. Our GPS (Garmin) tried to take us in over a reserve with steps so make sure you come in from the north side!

This B & B is a very comfortable & clean room in a lovely house on a quiet street. So much nicer than being in a boxy motel room. A good view of the garden & surrounding countryside. It is a 10 minute walk to the harbor & good restaurants.
The hosts (The Kells) make you feel very welcome & provide an excellent breakfast, either continental or a cooked one, together with good conversation if you are up for it.
Guests have their own house access so are not imposing on the hosts privacy.
I fully recommend it & would definitely stay there again if in Whangarei.

This is a beautiful little bed & breakfast in a peaceful & quiet cul de sac in Whangarei, with two very lovely hosts who provided a beautiful cooked breakfast! They also offered rides to pickup and drop off to the Whangarei airport which is so helpful, when you don’t have a car! The location is very scenic, overlooking the river and with very picturesque hills as a backdrop. It is also very convenient, being a short 12 minutes walk from the courthouse & several law firm offices on Bank street, which was ideal for the purpose of my trip. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable, each with their own bathroom, heating (important during winter!) and wifi access. Overall this was a very pleasant, comfortable stay - recommended if you appreciate the bed and breakfast experience and are looking for something a bit different to a hotel experience. I would gladly stay at Pentland House again!

We agree with everything everyone else has said and can only add that the photos are accurate - except they don't show the biscuits in the kitchen! Id managed to break a bone in my foot the day before and Roger sent me off with a lovely walking stick (which I am still using :( ) The commuter traffic was quite loud and started early so do bear this in mind if it might be a problem for you. The evening was lovely and quiet for sitting on the patio.

We used Pentland as our base while our yacht was being repaired in Whangerai, it was just perfect in every way.
Roger and Bardy were perfect hosts, always available and a source of wonderful tips and information.
Breakfasts were scrumptious, with home made preserved fruit from their garden.
Location was everything, a 7 min walk to the town basin and the centre of town.
Highly recommended...
