Had a tent site, which is powered. Martin the owner helped me set the tent and was very friendly and helpful with local recommendations. The park has many families and pretty safe. Loved the lines to hand laundry and wet swim suit and towels. The kitchen is well equipped, and the whole park is cleaned on regular basis. Everyone cooked and the kitchen and fridge were kept at good standards. So I left without paying the extra night, totally skipped my mind, and Martin called me and inquired about what happened, was very professional, we sorted it out. Would stay there whenever in the area .

My room was clean, bright and well maintained. The owner was friendly and helpful. Kitchen was well equipped. Bathrooms clean with great showers. Good value for money and I will definitely consider staying again. Owner discussed COVID-19, which from my perspective was good.

OK, it’s not new but it is very clean and well maintained. The owner is very friendly and full of local knowledge. The park has a great community feel with everyone being very friendly and welcoming. The kitchen is well equipped but one of the best things about this is the showers. Clean, lots of hot water and good water pressure. And the showers are included in the price. No extra coins needed and no water shutting off after 3 minutes.

Basic, clean, friendly little place with a very helpful owner. We stayed in a sunny compact double room near the gate, which warmed up nicely in the wintry temperatures with the heater. The outdoor kitchen and bathrooms were a bit Arctic in the winter. Probably better in summer. This place has its own quirky 1950s holiday camp vibe... and could do with a bit of paint and a facelift. Still, recommended for its friendliness.

The manager of this place left all my credit card details on the counter for anyone to see. I have had to zero my account and discuss with the card issuer. The manager was like a little kid in his reaction to me alerting him to this, with the look and behaviour of a told off little boy. To get revenge he said he was going to add a sanitation fee to my card when he found water on the mattress that someone had spilt on the mattress below my bunk. He had a temper tantrum later when discussing this and became aggressive in his manner, yelling at me. And to cap it all, check out he advised me, was at 10am, but before that he lets the cleaners go into the rooms. I was rudely disturbed before then by a cleaner hammering on the door and calling out “open up”.

Response from Martin Wright, Owner at YHA Whangarei
Responded 11 Mar 2020
Our problems began with this guest from the outset while trying to assist him with a late check-in by phone. He was rude and aggressive. Part of our late check-in process involves the guest’s card being charged. His card details were written down on a piece of paper and left on the receptionist side of the check-in counter, reception at this stage was closed for the night. Our normal procedure is to shred all details once the guest leaves. The following morning the guest came into reception and saw the piece of paper, the only way to see the paper was to physically lean over the reception counter. The details were to be added to his electronic booking. The manager apologised on several occasions during their conversation and tried to explain the process to the guest who was rude, abusive and physically threatening. The guest was in one of our 4 share dorm cabins, the other guests had left and the cleaner went in to strip the beds vacated at that time as the room was unlocked. The guest wasn’t in the room at the time, his bed wasn’t touched. The cleaner returned to empty the waste bin and on this occasion the door was closed. She knocked politely on the door and explained what she wanted to empty the bin and was met with a mouthful of expletives. Shortly after the guest had left the cleaner striped his bed and reported that the bottom sheet and mattress protector were wet. As we had his mobile phone number we felt it better to call the guest and ask what had happened and inform him that a fee may be charged . From the outset of this call the guest was rude and abusive. Initially denying it was his bed, then claiming that his water bottle may have leaked. The guest returned to the holiday park and once again was rude, abusive and threatening. At this stage the staff member walked away as they were concerned for their physical safety. This type of rude, abusive and physically intimating behaviour toward staff isn’t necessary and shouldn’t have to be tolerated.

YHA Whangarei is a lovely little hostel near to both nature and the city, if you don't mind walking for a short while. Besides the very nice people here the best thing definitely is the very close distance to the beautiful Whangarei Waterfalls - it's less then five minutes to walk.

I would definitely recommend this place if you plan to stay few days in whangarei. The facilities are good, it’s clean, nice swimming pool, and I think the best was how the manager helped me with everything and gave me some advices about what to do around.

I really enjoyed my stay here. I stayed here for a longer time then I had planned. Its so peacefull an quite here. I slept as a solo backpacker in the dorm room. Very good and clean beds! The staff is amazing. They help you out with everything. And a special thanks to the cleaning staff to. They clean the hostel so well (I think 3 or more times a day). So the showers/kitchen/rooms were always clean. The location is also very good. You can easy hike to the lovely waterfalls and hike around. The supermarket (countdown) is 25 min walk away or you can call for a domino pizza delivery. I would definitely recommend this place!

That is a relax and cool place. Martin is such a great host, provided us with brillant recommandation about the area and was always helpful. There are many good point such as barbecue area, little swimming pool, hot tub, laundry, free parking. However the kitchen and the showers could be better. Was a good experience and enjoyed staying there, will come back if I have the chance to pass through one more time.

I have stayed in YHA hostels few times, always great experience. That’s why I picked YHA this time also because I know what to expect. Well, the quality wasn’t that good in this hostel. Wifi was free but not unlimited (just coupons of 400 mega each, to ask to the reception). Daily cleaning service with just one person working for the entire place. Toilets and facilities outside. Stinky and not clean at all room. Luckily the sheets were fresh. The facility need updating: the kitchen was not suitable for cooking. The manager was really helpful and polite, but this can’t help all the environmental situation.

We are sorry to hear about your experience which is not typical at all. Wifi is limited via a coupon. When it runs out all you need to do is ask for another. There are in fact 2 cleaners on at anyone time and you'll see from the vast majority of comments that the facilities are kept very clean. Yes the facilities are communal and this is made very clear when making the booking If you were in a shared room you can appreciate its not possible to monitor habits of your fellow travellers. We are in the process of upgrading various areas of the camp and have received many positive comments. Not sure why you couldn't cook in the kitchen, everyone else does. Enjoy the rest of your travels.
