Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We’ve done a few doc sites and Otamure is one of the cleanest and tidiest camps. The managers are fantastic and always willing to assist.
Beautiful beach and definitely take a walk at low tide to the beach towards the right. You won’t be disappointed.
The beach is very popular with day visitors and locals so be sure to grab a spot early in the day.
We will definitely be returning

Super clean and well organised campsite.

We came early in the season and the sites were already mown and marked out. The flattest sections are by the road side. It’s not noisy as the road is a no exit dead end.

Glorious morning birdsong, a beach with two streams and plenty of sand at mid to low tide.

Gorgeous safe beach right on camp doorstep. Swim, fish, snorkel and kayak every day. Lots of low tide rock walks and nature trails.
Camp toilets very clean and well looked after, cold showers brilliant.
Camp staff had all noise down by 10.30pm. Great family camp with big sites.
Staff always available, friendly and hard workers.

Rude and aggressive behaviour by staff who clearly have a common sense bypass.
Utterly ludicrous rules for just camping in a field. Very poor oversight by DOC who need to investigate the quality of staff at this place.
Small pitches, poor toilet facilities and no dump station mean give this one a wide berth.

We experienced a cheap family holiday at Otamure Bay. The facilities were clean, the camp operators were friendly, and the atmosphere was superb!!! Will need to book on line (in early September) to reserve a spot. The place was safe for the kids to roam around and people were extremely friendly. Wonderful beaches you can visit if you feel like a day away from the campsite. Will be returning for sure. Roll on next summer.

We stayed one night there and it was enought, lot of people "factory campground" your place is very smart and you must stay inside between 1.5meter or this side,.this side, this side ! Cold shower.. Sucks.. No right for bbq gas or fire, and nothing for do one (holidays without bbq).. Really ? Behind the campground you have the ocean this is the good point.. However.. A road trough between the ocean and the campground where everybody have an acces (people who are not in the camping, just here for swim) and we had the right had had 2 cars with sound systems who need to put the sound so loud for everybody could hear it !!

A beautiful location. A very well maintained and well managed campground. And a very relaxed atmosphere. Can't speak highly enough about the campground and the location. We had a fantastic family time there.

DOC ( Department of Conservation ) Campground.
This camp is a great place for 3 or 4 days of just pure laziness, just pitch your tent and soak up the view from the front door of your tent ( or RV ). It`s just a 1 minute walk to the lovely white sandy beach, which is safe for swimming. The facilities are spotless and cleaned everyday by the more than friendly hosts.
The stay for us was highlighted by the presence of the dolphins that came to us while we were out kayaking... but even more special as we sat having a cup of tea at night as the full moon came up and a large pod of Orca came cruising past... yep, a special place indeed.

Whilst it doesn't have the bells and whistles like electricity or hot water, the location more than makes up for it. Initially I was a little concerned cos I love my hot showers but a handy solar bag and a handheld shower adequately did the trick.
The camp operates on a first come, first serve basis so you need to get in quick around holiday time. We went at Easter and nabbed a great corner of the camp.
The beach is pristine clean and has a nice fall making it great for boggie boarding and safe for swimming - the kids loved it! There is also excellent snorkelling around the rocks at either end of the beach and fishing. Plenty of walks.
The highlight had to be the 20 or so DOLPHINS that put on a SeaWorld worthy performance and then gently swam amongst us as if to say thank you for coming. Truly a magical experience.
There is an estuary close by which we kayaked and knee boarded behind the boat in.
You need to bring everything with you including the kitchen sink (I'm sure a bucket will suffice) and think solar power. Oh and watch the little kids around the long-drops (toilet)...
I love this campground and can't wait to go back!

We have stayed here many times now, facilities are good, plenty of loos, cold water taps around the camp etc. Only cold showers, well it is a DOC camp so that's what you usually get. Take a solar shower if you like a warm shower. Camp managers ok, young lady in office getting there. Also take the walk up the steps and over the hill to heavenly bay at low tide, it's worth the effort. DOC have put their prices up to $13 per adult x that by 2 and it could be starting to get close to a camp fee for a camp with hot showers, flushing loos, and full kitchen to use, we stayed at Ahipara camp for $28. For 2 people, just saying.
