I had a lovely stay at Whangarei Central Holiday Park. I stayed in a self contained studio. Everything was clean and well cared for, the bed was super comfy and it had everything I needed. Location was great, an easy (and flat) walk into town. Highly recommended.

We thought the sign on the office saying "No gangs, no drug dealing, no soliciting for services" was rather unnerving but that was the least of our worries. We had booked and pre-paid for a powered campsite for three nights over Easter. Traffic held us up and we realised it would be dark when we arrived so checked online to see if they had a cabin we could upgrade to if it was too dark to put the tent up. There was one available so we decided we'd upgrade on arrival. We arrived at 6.30pm to find the office closed. Yes they close at 6pm even on he eve of a long weekend! But we saw the owner looking at us from her lounge (next to the office) so we went up to the office door but she wouldn't come out. We rang the telephone number. No reply. Next thing her dog comes running out of the lounge to bark at us. No attempt made to call it back in. Eventually we had to find a hotel for the night (slim pickings on a holiday weekend). When we went back the next day and raised it with the owner she said proudly told us "oh I don't work after 6pm you should have just found a site and set up - there's a sign on the door". Completely ignored the fact it was dark and not obvious where the powered tent campsites were and we'd wanted to upgrade to a cabin. The whole vibe of the camp is odd. Certainly not a fun holiday atmosphere. I wouldn't take a family here. The camp dog, although friendly enough, has free reign of the camp. We saw a dog poo on the driveway that some poor camper had obviously stood in. Only positive things I can say is it's close to town, they keep it as clean as you can for really old facitlites and it's cheap - but frankly you're better off paying the extra for a more pleasant experience. I'm pleased to say we went to the Raglan Holiday Park the following week and had a true 5-star camping experience for an extra $6pp per night. The difference in customer service and camp atmosphere was like a different planet after our Whangarei nighmare.

Hello Jaquelin. Thanks for choosing Whangarei Central Holiday Park. We are glad you came back the next day and decided to continue your stay. Unfortunately, being a late arrival on a long weekend and expecting to upgrade your pre-booked accommodation, out of hours is something out of our control. Most Park managers are great but we are not miracle workers. You arrived at 6.30 pm. Our office was closed, having already been open for more than 12 hours, and we had commitments elsewhere with family, celebrating Easter. It was suggested you perhaps could have rung through to the office prior to your arrival, knowing you were delayed and we would have made alternative arrangements for you. However, being Easter we were fully booked up. The only room available was checked out prior to the office closing. We were unaware you were wanting to change your accommodation and would have been more than happy to ring around other parks, as we do for other guests. We have a sign that has instructions on what to do and where to go. We are also glad you met our newest member, Boris, the 'camp dog'? He is a great guard dog and an excellent judge of character and only barks on occasion with questionable people. Although he's friendly enough and well-loved by all, he doesn't have free reign and certainly knows where his toilet is. Unfortunately, we had another guest stay, who has a dog and after reviewing the cameras, discovered this may be the deed you mentioned? Our Park vibe is normally well received with many repeat families staying time and time again. Being so close to town and competitively priced we are a preferred choice among many travellers. Our park dates back to 1974 and we are continually upgrading with new gas hot water systems, renovations and replacement of infrastructure. The facilities will be renovated shortly having been deferred due to Covid. All our staff are well trained in sanitation and cleaning procedures and we are glad you found this to be satisfactory? We are pleased you took the time to comment on your stay and hope we have addressed your concerns. We are an accommodation provider with a room for every budget and do provide 5-star accommodation should you desire, and again competitively priced, like most Parks, you get what you pay for. Look forward to seeing you again. Kind regards, John Management.

We rented one of the self-contained units for three days while in town for a wedding. For covid related reasons we had to make quite a few changes to the booking - Fiona and co could not have been more helpful, including accommodating an extra late booking halfway through our stay. Always really pleasant to deal with, thanks so much! The unit itself was perfect for us and in the middle of horrific humidity the air conditioning was a god send, especially for my heavily pregnant partner. Location was also really handily located to town.

I have been here a couple of times now and I love it . It is a relatively small sight but perfectly formed and on both occasions I stayed I found it clean and the water hot. It is perhaps not in the prettiest of surroundings but that is more than made up for by the warmth, compassion and professionalism of its owner Fiona. I was travelling on my own for both my stays and I felt completely safe and I would have no hesitation in staying here again and recommending it to other travelers.

My partner and I booked for a one nights stay in a powered site with our campervan, and on arrival we were greated with smiles, warmth and exceptional customer service. Presumably by the new owner, who happily showed myself around to know where everything was. The new owners are currently in the process of renovating everything since taking over the holiday park, and from everything I was told from what they are planning it's going to be even better than it currently is. Great pricing, great customer service, nice hot showers and kept very clean. What more could you ask for. We would certainly recommend this place. Thank you.

This is in a great spot and easy to walk into town. The owners are new and have great plans to update the place but it’s still a decent place to stop. The owners were so helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble.

Awful Place - the guy at reception stunk of BO - that was our welcoming hello. He was downright rude!! Bathroom block was filthy and dated - so bad I wouldn’t even shower my dog in there! Gate was locked until 7am so u couldn’t leave to get on the road early. We got told their sleep was important and to stay put! So rude, and so dirty. Would not go back!!

Yes, our gates closes automatically at 10.30pm & re-opens at 7am. Every guest is told of the times upon booking, so completely their decision to stay or not. Yes, we also that we are an older holiday park, which is why we pride ourselves in cleanliness. We thoroughly clean the facilities once a day & also check them consistently through the rest of the day, but unfortunately can not clean up after every messy guest. That being said, if we are made aware of a mess, we deal with it immediately. We apologise for the BO smell in our small reception, some of our guests arrive after cycling or hiking in the heat of the day & their smell lingers for a while.

We have returned here over and over during the past several years and always found this to meet our needs. We love the central location and while there is nothing “flash” about the facilities for campers, they are always clean, convenient and fairly priced. Sadly the recent city street and road detours have meant that directions are not super clear but we would encourage would-be visitors to find their way to this excellent camp for those seeking fair and decent accomodation .
