Detailed Reviews
We booked two rooms for a one night stay for my elderly parents and myself for a visit to the Hundertwasser Art Centre and had such a wonderful time that we wished we had booked the extra night. Our host made us feel completely at home, with every amenity you could wish for and more! We had our own lounge to sit in and on arrival after the drive up from Auckland, were served with a cup of tea by Jennie and some delicious homemade cake. There was a fully set up refreshments bar area which we could help ourselves from at any time of the night or day for cups of tea (including all herbal varieties) and selections of different coffees and chilled water. Breakfast was superb with an amazing freshly cut fruit salad, great coffee and a selection of homemade preserves and ham and cheese filled croissants and toast. Our beds were wonderfully comfortable and bathrooms were spotlessly clean with our host taking all health precautions. We were the only guests, occupying both guest rooms, so the lounge was for our sole use. Truly "home away from home". I particularly enjoyed the bush walk through the Kauri Forest accessed via the road opposite Chelsea House. The track leads down a river into the town centre with raised board walk over mangroves, really fantastic and the perfect start to my day before breakfast the next morning. Jennie has all the information on how to find the track and if you have time there are many other wonderful hikes in the area.

Hi, Thank you for taking time to leave such a wonderful review. We count ourselves lucky to be able to share our B&B with guests like you and your parents. We have worked hard to create a place where you can relax and enjoy a night or two away and feel at home during your stay. It was lovely to meet you and your parents and we hope that we can host you again in the future for a day or two longer. Safe travels home to Greece. Kindest regards Jennie

Jennie and Tony were incredibly welcoming and we settled quickly in to the most well-appointed room and comfortable bed on our two week vacation. There was on-site parking and plenty of space to spread out and get reorganized at this halfway point on our journey. Jennie was friendly and helpful in many things, including snagging a last minute dinner reservation at the best restaurant in town. She reached out to us weeks before our visit to inquire about our plans and offer suggestions for must-see sights. There were fresh baked cookies on hand, and delicious breakfast cooked to order each morning. Highly recommended!

Hi, R & P, Thanks for choosing to stay with us, not long before NZ was to go into lockdown and for such an awesome review - to learn that we were your favourite stay is really special. It was a treat to get to know you both and have time to sit and chat over a cuppa or breakfast. Every Friday as I sit down to watch Call the Midwife it reminds me of sharing that time with you too. All the very best and stay safe. Jennie and Tony

Everything about the Chelsea House B&B was perfect during our stay - the host was so friendly and helpful that we instantly felt at home.
The room was very lovely as well as the whole building!
Breakfast was delicious and miles ahead of anything you usually get in B&Bs (even if they are good), it felt more like a sunday morning with food prepared by a loving family member.
Another plus: there‘s a variety of peaceful bushwalks (the only place where I met people was a lookout) just across the street in case you don’t want to go back to the car after a long drive.

Choosing to stay at Chelsea House was brilliant. We had come for an overnight getaway, mainly to see the new Hundertwasser Art Centre, enjoy a dinner out, and a driving tour of the area. Jennie and Tony greeted us on our arrival, and gave us a tour of their B&B. The house has an interesting history, but it has also been remodeled to make it a wonderful B&B site. Our room was spacious, and it had access to the veranda. In the hall was a refreshment center with coffee/tea, biscuits, and a microwave and refrigerator for our use. We had the use of a communal tv lounge, as well. Everything was very well appointed and supplied. Our hosts were glad to offer suggestions for our dinner restaurant, and we had a lovely meal. We were welcomed back that evening with biscuits and banana date bread. We gathered our goodies and retired to the veranda to read.
The next morning Jennie greeted us with croissants, granola, fresh fruit, yoghurt, juices, butter curls and locally made preserves. She also offered to put the croissants together as sandwiches if we wished, but having them with breakfast was fantastic.
This is a very special B&B, and the hosts are so gracious & welcoming. The bed was firm & very comfortable. They bent over backward to make our stay special. We highly recommend a stay at Chelsea House.

Hi, Thank you for your wonderful review. It was lovely to host you both at Chelsea House B&B last week, on your well deserved break away from a busy job. It’s so gratifying to see that our efforts to provide a welcoming home away from home for our guests are appreciated. We would love to welcome you both back, and hope that you will come and stay again next time you head down to Whangarei. Kindest regards Jennie

This would have to be the best bnb in NZ. We stayed here 4 nights. From the moment we walked in we felt at home. Jennie explained the history of the old house and then showed us to our room. The room was spacious and extremely clean as was the ensuite. We were given the use of their lounge which had a small table in it. With use of the microwave, plates and cutlery available in a unit in the spacious passage way we were able to buy at the supermarket and cook our own meals. Breakfasts were filling served at the long table in the kitchen. As we didn't eat the croissants Jennie filled the with ham, cheese and tomato for our lunches. As we were away from home for a while I was able to catch up on our washing using their washing machine. Jennie and Tony are superb hosts, there if needed, if not, in the background leaving us to our own devices. We would highly recommend this BnB.

We spent one short night here and wished we could stay longer! Jennie is so welcoming and the house is well appointed. She has thought of everything! She spent time with us chatting through our plans and giving tips (her and her husband used to be travel agents). The front bedroom was gorgeous….high ceilings, beautifully decorated, even toiletries in case you ran out and candies in a dish. There was a cart with tea, cookies, etc for anytime you wanted anything and a large sitting room. Breakfast was wonderful with so many homemade jams to choose from, fruit and she even gave us a takeaway croissant for our early departure. I can’t say enough wonderful things about this B&B….the best stay bar none of our two weeks on the island!

Me and my wife spent two nights at Chelsea House as part of our honeymoon trip to New Zealand. Jennie and Tony were great hosts and made sure we enjoy our time at Whangarei. Jennie went out of her way several times for us. She drove us around the area, gave us a lot of useful recommendations on things to do not only in Whangarei but also New Zealand since she used to work in the tourism industry, and voluntarily got us a booking at one of the best restaurants in town! The breakfast that Jennie cooks is great and I would recommend anyone who is going to visit Chelsea House to try Jennie cakes they are so lovely. It truly felt that we were in a home away from home.

We stayed at the Chelsea House for 2 nights. The house has a great history. The rooms are spacious and well equipped as is the whole house. Jennie made us feel very comfortable and gave us great suggestions on how to spend our days. It is walking distance to great walks and to town and convenient to Whangarei Heads which is a great place to spend a day. There are only two bedrooms so it is very private. The breakfast and snacks are delicious. We would definitely return.
