Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The only good thing about this hotel is that they refunded our money once we'd seen the room. The hotel is unrenovated, (I think they'd just started the process), smelt like mould and cigarettes, and had no heater or air conditioning in the middle of winter. I hope it gets better once renovated.

Great location and room was good. Quiet. However we couldn’t get any hot water… was only just tepid in the evening and again in the morning. Ran it for a while in case it was the distance from the HW cylinder but never ran hot. Bedside tables were sticky.

I would give no stars if I could! Super expensive with an interior from the 1920s max. One window that we had to hope it would not be falling down as there was nothing to lock it in an open position. Room was super stuffy when we arrived. I am posting this early because the lady vacuuming the hallway (probably with a vacuum from the 20s as well) and ramming the walls and doors. 5am. 😯 No fan in the bathroom. Nothing welcoming, we had to check in at the bar and enter the hotel through the Thai restaurant, we were looking for the hotel entrance for a while when we got here. No parking..... Luckily we arrived late enough for the parking being free overnight on the street and we got woken up in time 🤔 the only good thing is the wifi works. Can not advise.

Overall, an OK stay. Couldn't warm the room on a freezing night with the heater provided, No hot water for showers and noisy but that was expected. Car parking was a huge problem. A big plus was the ensuite.

Loud thumping music and shouting till 3am. Next door room continued with music and noise till 4.30. Nobody in hotel available to deal with it. Max 1 hr sleep. No toilet paper so had to purchase. Would never stay again and would recommend leaving town before staying here.

I usually wouldn't write a review, however I don't want someone to have the same experiences I had. I payed $70 for this room so I wasn't expecting anything too grand, however my expectations were still too high. To put it bluntly, I have had far better experiences and sleeps in $20 hostels. I had to sleep with headphones in and it was still broken countless times due to others flushing toilets, water cylinders filling up, hearing entire clear as day conversations, and the incredibly loud karaoke coming through the floor from the pub downstairs was just the icining on the cake. The cleanliness was subpar, room wasn't as depicted in photos, and the general hotel and room was beyond run down and quite grubby. Wouldn't recommend to anyone unfortunately. One positive thing though, is that the woman I dealt with in the bar to get my key and the woman I checked out with were both pleasant.

Good town centre location for a budget price. Dated but well maintained and very clean. Next to the bus station but parking a car can be difficult - the staff allocated us a parking space. It has a restaurant which we did not try but we did enjoy the bar facilities. We only drink beer but there was a reasonable choice at low prices. We found the staff on reception and in the bar to be pleasant and efficient. We would stay here again.

Right in the centre of Whangarei you find your bed in a hotel steeped in history. Comfortable and clean. Walking distant to my favorite restaurant the Fat Camel. Good cheap option. Many moons ago the Queen stsyed here, so surely good enough for me

If you enjoy old style hotels you will love the sweeping staircase at the Grand. We had a comfortable stay in the queen balcony room and it was great to relax on the balcony. The washclothes and towels were a touch of luxury. Booking in was straightforward and the staff friendly.
