Detailed Reviews
Good town centre location for a budget price. Dated but well maintained and very clean. Next to the bus station but parking a car can be difficult - the staff allocated us a parking space. It has a restaurant which we did not try but we did enjoy the bar facilities. We only drink beer but there was a reasonable choice at low prices. We found the staff on reception and in the bar to be pleasant and efficient. We would stay here again.

Room Tip:Â Our front room faced the bus station and so obviously went quiet over night.

Overall, an OK stay. Couldn't warm the room on a freezing night with the heater provided, No hot water for showers and noisy but that was expected. Car parking was a huge problem. A big plus was the ensuite.

+1
Yes, I loved those stairs, sweeping!
This hotel was easy to find and walk to from the Whangarei Information Centre.
Staff were easy to talk to and deal with. Its a little bit strange walking out of the building, around the corner into a bar/pub and then booking with bar staff, but I think they wear all hats.
I did get accosted in a 'playful manner' by one of the pub regulars but I managed to get booked in and escape.
Key deposit is $20 and you can pay for this and your room by card or cash.
There is NO lift, in case anyone has difficulties.
My room was functional. I guess I like old style buildings. I actually stayed here twice a few days apart as you cannot beat the price $60 for a single room. When I returned the 2nd time, my room was further down hallway as the Lady advised that there was a party going on that night and it may be noisy. My first room was the better one, however both rooms had a huge shower space and wonderful hot water, yes it has carpeted walls and old decor but all works and more importantly all clean.
Electric plugs a plenty but some plugs are difficult to use as not enough space around them.
Tea and coffee making facilities. Internet/WiFi was awesome. Thai restaurant downstairs to order food or have a meal in or you can wander out and find decent restaurants close by. There's a nice coffee place not too far away with great coffee, forgot the name of it tho. There's a Chinese takeaway across the road, I didn't find the food too appealing but if you're tired and want something hot and cheap, head there.
Plenty of parking, parking meters, but you can park right outside the hotel if there's a spot and park across the road. You are also close the bus stops.
I definitely recommend this hotel - if you are looking for swanky and plush, this is not for you, but if you want good shower space, piping hot water, clean rooms and (hopefully) quiet neighbours then this is the place.
Taxi to the airport is about $40.

The only good thing about this hotel is that they refunded our money once we'd seen the room. The hotel is unrenovated, (I think they'd just started the process), smelt like mould and cigarettes, and had no heater or air conditioning in the middle of winter. I hope it gets better once renovated.

Should have trusted our instincts but didn’t.
Checkin was a public bar counter. Main lobby had sign requesting work boots to be removed before entry.
Decor seriously dated, I’m guessing decades old. Claim to fame was Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip’s stay in 1953. Probably last time it was presentable.
Bed had spring poking through mattress. No joke!
Worst experience in years but only have ourselves to blame. Should have just left and gone elsewhere.
Stay at your own risk - you’ve been warned…

I would give no stars if I could! Super expensive with an interior from the 1920s max. One window that we had to hope it would not be falling down as there was nothing to lock it in an open position. Room was super stuffy when we arrived. I am posting this early because the lady vacuuming the hallway (probably with a vacuum from the 20s as well) and ramming the walls and doors. 5am. 😯 No fan in the bathroom. Nothing welcoming, we had to check in at the bar and enter the hotel through the Thai restaurant, we were looking for the hotel entrance for a while when we got here. No parking..... Luckily we arrived late enough for the parking being free overnight on the street and we got woken up in time 🤔 the only good thing is the wifi works. Can not advise.

Loud thumping music and shouting till 3am. Next door room continued with music and noise till 4.30. Nobody in hotel available to deal with it. Max 1 hr sleep. No toilet paper so had to purchase. Would never stay again and would recommend leaving town before staying here.

Its right smack bang in the CBD, my fave bar is downstairs, the rooms are low priced but come with everything I need to enjoy a night away. never a hassle too book a room, and always get pleasant service from the staff at bar when booking.
The rooms arent huge, but the showers are GOOOOOOD,better than the one in my own house lol
i see alot of negative ratings, but I personally have stayed at grand over 20 times in the past 5 years and NEVER had a negative experience. in fact, will be booking all my friends in there next month when we have a housewarming.

Ok I can put up with the worn out carpets, shoddy decor and general disrepair, but after a long journey I really wanted a hot shower and to contact family through email................
We had no hot water for showers and there was no wifi when mentioned to the staff they
did not care. Total rip off
