We're definitely not youthful but felt very much at home in Braemar House. We stayed in the B and B, finding it very comfortable, quiet, and with lovely touches - fluffy bathrobes and towels, a door onto the verandah, quiet, chocolates on the pillow, a basin in the room with bathroom across the hall - so many caring things. The shared kitchen is very well stocked with tools and pots, very clean and all we needed to prepare a meal. Calvyn and Alice are the nicest of hosts, very helpful and cheerful. We'll be back, and in the meantime are telling others about it. There is a wonderful cafe around the corner - The Yellow House. Great coffee and meals.

Welcoming hosts, beautiful tidy clean organized facilities, warm room, comfy bed, street parking (camera monitored). I stayed in youth hostel part out back, but there's also a B&B in the main building. Would definitelt stay here again.

what a great place to stay such a variety of accommodation-from the dorm bunk rooms to the B&B rooms in this grand old house. The B&B has its own lounge and dining room which, like the bedrooms are beautifully furnished. We enjoyed amazing breakfasts served by our lovely hosts. The YHA side has a lounge and really well equipped kitchen. A great place to mix and meet other travellers. Close to the river walk into the city this is a peaceful place to stay. This was our second visit and we plan to stay again when next in town.

We had a lovely time here. Rooms comfortable, breakfast plentiful. Shared bathrooms not an issue as there was always one available and always very clean. Such a nice ambiance and sitting room where we could sit and talk to other guests.

I stayed for one night as a stopover on a trip and it was a great place to stay. Room had a heater to stay warm and while in a cabin in the backyard, access to the main house kitchen and lounge area. It was a 15-20 minute walk to the main part of town by the River. Easy on street parking, and fast wifi. Very friendly owners and sweet dog. I even caught a view of some chickens in the garden.

I would totally recommend this YHA hostel. During my 2 day stay s I was made welcome by the hosts Alice and Calyvn who extended great country hospitality. The rooms and facilities are great. I had left my phone charger in Wellington so Calyvn found a broken one and repaired, thank you. Finally great country hospitality, charming building and great gardens.

Alice & Calvyn are exceptional hosts. They’re always very welcoming, friendly & cheerful. They make every effort to ensure your stay is as enjoyable as possible. They’ve cultivated a relaxing environment with the house built in 1888, set in lovely well maintained grounds with good views of the river. The B&B section has a large verandah which looks out to the river making a pleasant place to relax on a Summers evening. There’s also plenty of outdoor seating for the Hostel and cabin guests. Located within easy walking of the town centre and local supermarkets. The kitchen is well equipped. Not usually being one for kitchen gadgets, I’m now converted to using both the air fryer and rice cooker. Alice goes to great lengths to ensure the towels are fluffy and the sheets nice and crisp. Comfy beds and good showers too. Everything is very clean and well maintained. Dash the dog is happy to play ‘fetch’ and the chickens & quail all add to the rich tapestry of the place.…
