This is a granad old building that formerly was a nursing home and is now an upmarket backpackers. It is well maintained and clean. We stayed in room 3 which was handy to the entrance and carpark and also to the dining room for breakfast. Our room was en suite and looked out over the tree tops. The owner, Theo, is very welcoming and so are his staff. I appreciated the reminder e-mail. There is also a guest kitchen wnere you can make a hot drink. Hikurangi is very well located and close to the CBD. Very affordable. very quiet.

We were having great difficulty finding accommodation late afternoon and found this place on the internet. Was comfortable and affordable for our one night stay. very friendly hosts and lovely to see such a lovely historic house being maintained and used. Easy off road parking was a plus.

We had an excellent stay at Hikurangi Stayplace. The room was nice and comfortable with an ensuite bathroom. The room was clean and the host was friendly and welcoming. Nice kitchen area along with a dining room where they served breakfast. Well worth the price.

Unfortunately for a young single female travelling alone the room didn't have a lock on the door so made her feel very unsafe. Didn't end up staying the night - she moved to other accomadtion. Maybe would have felt safer if the room felt secure

This has to be the worst accomodation I've ever stayed in. The security is questionable as some of the locals come in for late night (midnight) rowdy conversations with their friends banging on the outside door to get in. Then if that wasn't enough your shower will be cold to tepid. When I questioned the manager she fobbed me off with " the plumbers coming next week". So it never got fixed. They don't have a mechanical dishwasher so all the plates in the commercial kitchen are hand washed. I'm pretty sure this was where my bout of dysentery came from. The plates are stored in a cupboard that smells of rotting wood. Sure, this is a cheap backpacker accomodation. However contrary to what is advertised there is no breakfast included, no tea and coffee supplied and complete indifference from the management to any complaints. PLEASE AVOID THIS PLACE. We left a day early as we couldn't stand it any longer.

The host is excellent, the place is excellent with full kitchen and laundry facilities with a large garden as well and the room i stayed in was spacious with a large bathroom too. if you are going for a holiday and need a place to stay at Whanganui this would be the perfect place for you to stay. you can do your own cooking and washing and around the area you can have nice walks near river or take a nice walk to town centre. a very scenic place indeed with a river running through the town.

We were in Room 1 which has a high ceiling which made the room airy. The room was spacious. The beds were comfortable. The bathroom is a wet bathroom with an excellent shower. On site parking was readily available. We enjoyed the indoor bowling facility in the games room where pool and table tennis was also available. It is located not far from central Whanganui and is easy to find. It is in a quiet neighbourhood so sleeping is not a problem. While we did not use it there is a kitchen and dining room.

It would have been nice if there was tea and coffee available upon arrival. The pillows were a bit soft and thin for our liking. The room was a sparse in that it lacked a desk or set of drawers but did have a wardrobe. The continental breakfast was barely adequate and consisted of a choice of 3 cereals, a bowl of peaches and toast with coffee, tea and juice. While the games room had a pool table and a table tennis table there were no cue or table tennis balls - I guess they were available from the office.

It is a Guest House transformed with love from a former Rest Home. This huge old villa situated very privatly in a large garden with an amazing view over the town just 15 minutes walk to any part of Wanganui - restaurants, shops, centre, river, park....,
It has everything - big kitchen - dining with cooking facilities, few fridges, tv, cozy lounge with piano, plenty of parking space. And very yummy continental breakfast.
Rooms are modern, spacious, almost everyone has ensuite, clean.
But! what makes your stay very special it is the hosts - Theo and Jan! - friendly, interesting to talk, company, helpful. Thank you both!
And to make you more satisfied - you cannot beat the price for that!
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!!!

This is a lovely old building, which was a home, converted to a nursing home at one time in its life. Our room was clean, with ensuite bathroom, but very reminiscent of a nursing home! I got lost trying to find my way back to my room, through corridors and gardens! Beautiful breakfast area, and plenty of space in the rec room. Room had garden view, so fresh air. Would recommend.

We are a couple in our 60's and this was our first stay in what could be described as an up scale back packers hotel. It was a pleasurable experience. Our room was on the ground floor, small but very clean with a fitted wardrobe and small bedside table but large bathroom. Bedding was old fashioned but spotless as were the towels. Hot water plentiful and a good shower. Being about 20min walk to the center of town the hotel was quiet and set in gardens away from the road. Staff were friendly and helpful, breakfast was basic but good with toast cereal tea and coffee. Other residents were of a mixed age group and ethnicity, would definitely recommend this accommodation
