Being parkrunners and with Wellington still in "lockdown level 4 red light something something something" we planned a weekend in Wanganui as our nearest as yet unattended parkrun. Which meant we had to book somewhere near the river not far from the start line. And Rutland Arms Inn seemed to tick all out boxes. Accommodation. Parking. Restaurant. And a bar. So I booked 2 nights online. Very easy. And all the paperwork was waiting when we arrived. Easy check-in. Parking out back with back access to upstairs rooms. Helpful friendly staff. Room was clean and tidy with a very well equipped bathroom including spa bath and bidet. There was a party going on somewhere a block or two back behind us on our first night which was loud enough to be heard but not loud enough to be annoying. We found the room very warm but couldn't open windows for fear of party noise getting louder. Bed was firm and pillows weren't. In the morning it was a early rise to attend parkrun before returning for showers at which point we discovered we had not body wash. And also one of the two yes two wash basins had no hand soap. We let downstairs know and it was fixed lickety split. Our second night was a much quieter night in the neighbourhood, quiet enough to be able to hear the town clock chime all through the night. But again, only noticeable if you were already awake. The one thing we would suggest if we got Room 8 directly above the bar/restaurant chiller, which although quiet enough with the window open, was noticeable reverberating through the building around us. Not enough to keep us awake all night but if you were a light sleeper you might notice it. Checkout was easy and done at the bar once we had finished breakfast. Would we stay again? Certainly. A great team and a great room. Thanks.

The wife and I stayed for one night on our way to New Plymouth and we were not disappointed. The place has a certain charm. Check in was quick -Thank you Daniel-

The room was very clean as well as being spacious enough. Bathroom very clean and the usual amenities provided. Free parking is available at the back with direct access to the rooms so guests may skip going through the pub/front. Accessibility may be an issue for those who cannot or find it hard to take the stairs since the rooms are all on the first floor.

Breakfast is included but it's very limited (the quintessential Weetbix and toast with jam and butter). However, there are very good breakfast options a la carte. We will certainly return whenever in Whanganui.

We stayed for two nights at this little hotel located in the heart of Whanganui. The location is good for exploring the town, galleries and stores, seeing street art and going up the Durie Hill elevator.

Our room was nicely decorated, fitting the style of the hotel. The service we received from everyone was great and I enjoyed chatting with the lovely lady who cleaned our room.

The bar and restaurant downstairs had a really good buzz and it was always busy in the evenings. There’s a good range of beers and an excellent wine list. A continental breakfast was included in our room rate, or other breakfasts could be ordered. We didn’t eat other meals here, but they looked very hearty.

Rooms have been refurbished beautifully.
All food is exceptionally good, dinner was delicious with excellent friendly and efficient service… range of craft beers available was great fun.
Room is super quiet above the inn and large even with this being the smallest type of room they have.
Location is excellent, had a great time at market this morning and are just a quick walk away from lots to see and do.
The included breakfast was a choice of several cereals and toast, with compote and yogurt… all of which was delicious.
The team are very kind and helpful and super keen to support with anything you might need or want.

This is a fantastic pub with great food and great service. I’ve frequented this place on many occasions whilst a regular visitor to Whanganui and it’s consistently great. Would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a warm and hospitable experience.

2 stars. 1 for location 1 for breakfast included and carpark at rear. Poor not boutique accommodation. They need to up their game for $190 night triple room. Definitely not boutique. codwebs, dirty bedcoverings, lights not working, heating thermostats not working ie hot only on heaters, poor water temp in shower and terrible pressure. Poor check in. Told can't check in until 3pm. arrived at 3pm and reception closed 'go to the bar' Breakfast 'go to the bar ' we sat and waited ...as 'joyce' walked by us 3 times without a goodmorning and only then we realised it's not table service ' go to the bar'. until they drop their prices or up their game.. stay somewhere else. it's not boutique.

There don't seem to be a lot of options for accommodation in Whanganui, but I think we found a good one. When it says check in 3pm that's exactly what they mean so don't expect to get into your room any earlier than that. Thankfully, the rooms are part of a pub, so could have a drink while we waited for the clock to tick around.

Room was clean and looked exactly as it did on the online photo, bathroom was very clean and modern. For a one-night stop over this was a comfortable place to stay. Not suitable for anyone with mobility problems as all rooms are upstairs and there is no lift available.

Breakfast is served downstairs in the pub, but limited options for what is included in price of room.

The hotel looked a little tired from the outside but it was totally different - very fresh and maintained once through the door. We loved it here - we loved the fact that there was a restaurant bar attached that was beautifully furnished in an old pub style. The range of beers was good, served at the right temperature and kept well. The food was very nice and the breakfast options were great. The upstairs accommodation area was clean and fresh, the room appeared to be newly renovated with tasteful but comfortable furniture, nice bathroom, and wifi. There was dedicated parking out the back. The location was central; right in the middle of the shops. The staff were warm, welcoming and professional. The price was great value for money.

We booked a night here when travelling around the north island. It has a pub underneath but you couldn’t hear pub noise in the room.

The room was great, really big with a double and single bed, but still warm in the middle of winter. Beds were comfy. The bathroom was wheelchair suitable (although all the rooms were upstairs). It was also well equipped with coffee and tea making facilities and a bar fridge, as well as a TV and free wifi.

We thought the room rates were very reasonable, with a continental breakfast included. We ate dinner in the pub restaurant, which was good pub food and did beer tastings - also the sort of place where single travellers would be able to eat without feeling conspicuous. The pub itself specialises in craft beers, with beer tastings available.

It has a car park for guests, and a little lounge room upstairs. The stairs are quite steep, both internal stairs and external stairs down into the car park.

Staff were lovely, friendly and chatty. We will definitely stay there again!

A last minute decision because of a cancelled trip. Made to feel very welcome and the staff were helpful and friendly. The room was comfortable, clean and spacious.
The car park was a tight squeeze and the outside steps to the rooms were challenging in the rain, although there is an internal staircase as well.
The restaurant was buzzing with mainly locals. Always a good sign. The food and beer were excellent as was breakfast the next morning.
