Very disappointed by the service provided by the staff at a recent wake attended by a group from all over NZ and Australia. An issue on booking numbers that was unfortunately not managed well at all. Rude staff, poor service, derogatory comments to the paying customer about being a liar, point blank refusal to serve alcohol to dining guests was an escalation way above the booking issue. No guests in NZ deserve to be told to F off. I felt management on the night failed to take responsibility for his wait staff and manage the situation in a professional manner. A very unfortunate incident that could have easily been avoided.

I acknowledge the ongoing feedback and reviews from your group. I am the owner, and I was not present on the evening, however I received two phone calls during the evening from my Manager regarding your group. As you will see from our other reviews on this platform, we treat our customers extremely well, and certainly are not in the habit of telling our valued, paying customers to leave our premises at all - let alone without justification. This very much a case of "there are two sides to every story". In thirteen years of owning the Rutland, I have been called in only three times to deal with unpleasant customers, where my staff have been at an absolute loss to continue to cope with them. Your group was the third - but you had departed by the time I got there. To that end, I spoke to my staff, who were upset (one of whom is only a teenager) and my Bar Manager, who looked utterly shell-shocked. I then rung the organiser of your group to speak to her. The lady I spoke to was pleasant and articulated her concerns to me. I explained (as my staff had done earlier) why we cannot add extra people to an already large table when we the restaurant is fully booked. We had also explained this to her when she booked - that we would need firm numbers as we are not a catered venue, but a seated restaurant. That is why we rung to confirm her numbers two days prior to the booking. However, it seems she was not privy to the rudeness, arrogance and harassment my staff were subjected too, mostly at the bar, by members of your group. It appears that many of your group may not have witnessed this, as there is no way that this could have been deemed as acceptable and justified. She was also not aware that my staff were filmed by your group. Never have my chef's left the kitchen to make sure their team members were coping okay with the behaviour they were on the receiving end of. Never, in ten years of working for me, has my Bar Manager had to raise his voice to customers to tell them to leave the premises. You have every sympathy from myself and my husband for the loss of the loved one you were farewelling. However, the behaviour of a minority of your group on Wednesday, towards my staff was unacceptable and very upsetting for them, and is not something they are used to dealing with at the Rutland. The lady I spoke to said I would be losing business as a result of their visit last Wednesday evening, however, this is not the kind of repeat business I want my staff to have cope with again, and fully concur with your decision not to return to the Rutland. However, again, please accept my condolences for your loss.

Well where too begin!!! At my friend's father's wake, After lots of money spent (but it's not all about the money) it was after we had our lovely dinner that we got told to leave!!! We were all rather gobsmacked! After grieving for our friend, I am sure he wouldn't have won't it to end this way unbelievable. I did question the Manager, he just wouldn't answer my question but said "just leave" , we couldn't believe how aggressive they where to us, we where a party of 60 year olds. So we left, and decided to go to to another establishment, we where welcome with open arms. I also would like to say the lady with the Australian accent, was very much a lady!!! I will never go to this place again, fancy staff being so rude to people that are greiving!!!

My uncle's wake was held at the Rutland on a Wednesday evening in early November and the experience was marred by disappointing treatment from the staff. Initially, everything seemed fine until a couple of extra guests joined us for dinner. The staff seemed upset about this, claiming we had lied about the number of people when booking the table. We explained that it was a wake, and it's challenging to predict how many people will stay, but our explanation fell on deaf ears. Their main concern appeared to be their workload with other tables, which I found to be a less than empathetic response, given the circumstances. To make matters worse, we were accused of being drunk. While it's true some of us had been drinking, no one was behaving in an obnoxious or difficult manner. A few of us were teary, given the nature of the occasion, but there was no disruptive behaviour. I believe the situation could have been resolved amicably if the staff had communicated their concerns to us and allowed us to explain the context. Unfortunately, a decision was made without considering our perspective, leaving us feeling unfairly judged. This experience was particularly distressing for my cousins, who had just lost their father. Instead of feeling supported and understood during a difficult time, they were made to feel as though they had done something wrong. It was disheartening to witness the lack of compassion and understanding from the staff, especially in a hospitality setting where empathy and kindness should prevail. On this occasion, the Rutland's hospitality fell short. I had hoped for a more understanding and compassionate response, considering the nature of the event. Unfortunately, due to this disappointing experience, I have decided not to return to the Rutland in the future.

Thank you for your feedback, Kate. This is very much a case of "there are two sides to every story". In thirteen years of owning the Rutland, I have been called in only three times to deal with truly unpleasant customers, where my staff have been at an absolute loss to continue to cope with them. Your group was the third - but the group had departed by the time I got there. To that end, I spoke to my staff, who were upset (one of whom is only a teenager) and my Bar Manager, who looked utterly shell-shocked. I then rung the organiser of your group immediately to speak to her. The lady I spoke to was pleasant and articulated her concerns to me. I explained (as my staff had done earlier) why we cannot add extra people to an already large table when we the restaurant is fully booked and absolutely under the pump. It delays the whole restaurants service - not just the table in question. When she made the booking, we had told her that we needed confirmed numbers as we are a restaurant, not a catered venue. We also rung her to confirm her numbers two days prior to the booking. It is my understanding that there were six extra guests that arrived to dine, however only two ended up staying. Your organiser, however, was not privy to the rudeness, arrogance and harassment my staff were subjected too, mostly at the bar, by members of your group - and particularly by a woman with an Australian accent. And you will also see by our reviews that we provide excellent service, and very rarely fall-short of this. However, the behaviour of a minority of your group on Wednesday, towards my staff was unacceptable and very upsetting for them. The lady I spoke to said I would be losing business as a result of their visit last Wednesday evening, however, this is not the kind of repeat business I want my staff to have cope with again, and fully concur with your decision not to return to the Rutland. I visited this restaurant while on a business trip to Whanganui. The food was exceptional, I went for the steak which was cooked to perfection and accompanied with some very tasty vegetables. The beers selection was brilliant and I will certainly visit again on a non-work day to test more of the beers on offer. The staff were great, very attentive. I would recommend a visit if you are in the area.

What a delightful hotel. Beautifully furnished with comfort in mind and an eye for retro style. All members of staff, without exception, were friendly and helpful. The food was excellent and imaginative. Great craft beers and good wines. I can’t recommend this highly enough.

A last minute decision because of a cancelled trip. Made to feel very welcome and the staff were helpful and friendly. The room was comfortable, clean and spacious. The car park was a tight squeeze and the outside steps to the rooms were challenging in the rain, although there is an internal staircase as well. The restaurant was buzzing with mainly locals. Always a good sign. The food and beer were excellent as was breakfast the next morning.

The hotel looked a little tired from the outside but it was totally different - very fresh and maintained once through the door. We loved it here - we loved the fact that there was a restaurant bar attached that was beautifully furnished in an old pub style. The range of beers was good, served at the right temperature and kept well. The food was very nice and the breakfast options were great. The upstairs accommodation area was clean and fresh, the room appeared to be newly renovated with tasteful but comfortable furniture, nice bathroom, and wifi. There was dedicated parking out the back. The location was central; right in the middle of the shops. The staff were warm, welcoming and professional. The price was great value for money.

Warm, clean Inn. Bar and restaurant good food and price, with eye catching old style ordiments. Staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. Lovly wooden and early 1900 decor. In just the right spot to walk around city and river.

The beer is not cold, the food is below average, even the staff seemed a little overwhelmed, and really not that busy, we have come from wellington, we won't be back. Last time we where here it was great obviously it has changed hands 👐 a little more attention to detail
