We stayed here for one night in December 2020. As a member of the My Millenium club I was given what I calculate to have been a 15% discount, so we ended up paying $139.50 for the room and a cooked breakfast for two. We were also given a voucher for two free beers in the bar (two 200ml glasses).

The hotel is well located on the main road about a 10-15-minute walk from the central city where there are plenty of restaurants and shops. Adjacent to the hotel are three supermarkets and two (three?) petrol stations. The road to New Plymouth is just a block from the hotel.

We parked right outside the front entrance of the hotel. The rooms are spread out and our room on the ground floor overlooked a lawn area. The only noise was from people in the corridor.

The room was fairly large and had all the usual items: TV, iron and ironing board, clock radio, heater, large desk and luggage storage rack, chairs, tea and coffee facilities, fridge etc. The bathroom also had the usual toiletry items. The wifi was ok.

Everything works, but the hotel is just old and there are many signs of age and wear and tear. The hotel needs modernising. For example, the guest information folder had a list of phone charges including 'Telecom' cellphone calls. Telecom changed to Spark in 2014!

We usually don't watch TV but, on the night that we stayed at the hotel, we wanted to watch the delayed news on either TVNZ + 1 or TV3 + 1. Those channels were not on the TV. There were only nine channels. That really is not acceptable.

Now, what can I say about the breakfast? For $24 each (less the discount from the My Millennium club), we certainly did not get value for money. The breakfast buffet provided bread/toast, jams etc, fruit, yoghurt, cereal, tea and coffee from a machine, hash browns, beans, fried eggs, sausages, and bacon. The presentation was very unattractive and, once the four hash browns in the heated tray were gone, there were no more. Yes, the breakfast buffet did provide the basics, but for $24 we could have gone somewhere else to get proper coffee and a wider selection. My advice: don't pay extra for the breakfast.

Overall, it's as if this hotel has relied on its Millennium brand and maybe its glory days. However, the whole hotel needs a serious upgrade to tidy it up and to bring it into the 21st century. We will not stay here again.

This hotel was found while googling good hotels in Whanganui. Unfortunately the review did not match what we received. We paid top $200 for each night we stayed. Two nights. Top premium price for Whanganui. Staff some were friendly and some were not and we seemed to be imposing on them. Very little information given about the place or facilities. We did not know check out time, we did not know that they had a restaurant on site, and that they did breakfast, or even that they had a pool. Breakfast was a complete let down. Very expensive for the lack of variety, and the food was cold, overcooked (eggs)/hash browns etc) Surely all of this information should be communicated and if not, they should have some paperwork in our room that we can read. We stayed in room 9. There is no air conditioning and only a fan. The evenings that we stayed were both extremely hot, and the fan did nothing to help with that. If you opened the ranch slider you got all of the outside noise, and let bugs in. Room was lovely. Nicely done up with a lovely bed etc. No tissues in our room , no hair drier in the room. The bathroom was horrible with an old tap for shower over the bath, with very little water pressure, and the glass screen door did not prevent water from getting all over the bathroom floor. No handle or anything to allow you into and out of the bath/shower, and the bath mat even if you followed their instructions, the mat still moved all over the place. If the above missing items were replaced and bathroom done up with an air conditioning unit, I would pay the price we paid, otherwise, this was overpriced and lacked in many areas for us.

It was as the title says pleasant enough.
We were traveling as a family of five so we needed to book 2 rooms which was ok and they placed us across the hall from each other and that was fine, the rooms were very comfortable (all though a little dated), there were cobwebs and mold on the windows of one of our rooms and removing the pillows from the bed exposed a big nasty pink stain, our other room was clean and tidy.
The pool was great to entertain the kids and is a good size.
There is a restaurant and bar on site but room service is only available for breakfast and dinner and the Cafe on site although we got told they were opening at 4 it was actually 5 so we took ourselves off into town for a snack and some drinks.
We were not expecting in the Ritz, the price was good, and we would stay again

The hotel is a decaying corpse with worn out carpets beaten up furniture. Morning could not come soon enough so I could get home to scrub myself clean of that old dusty smell like a room that has been locked up for decades. The only accommodation it provides is for dust mites, bed bugs and dead spiders. I seriously contemplated sleeping in my car.

I get that hotels can be old and not modern but that is no excuse for also dirty, uncomfortable and unhygienic. The carpet needed cleaning in the room and in the hallway, our towels were past their use by date, freyed, holes and worn. Beds were average and had serious roll together, bathroom had black mold. Windows and furniture had food and handprints over them. Didn't eat there as the state of accomodation made us worry about getting sick. Only redeeming features were the pool and the location.

staff behave rude and do not bother to help customer or sort things out. The reception asked me to visit them on a Thursday for long-term accomodation booking. I told her that I will check my plan and call back to confirm the date. After I checked the bus timetable from Wellington to Whanganui I noticed that there is not bus available on that date. So I called them and explained why I couldn't make it on that date and asked them If I could visit them the week after, and the lady on the phone got very angry and mentioned that she will cancel the whole plan and hung up on me without allowing me to say a word.

Such a shame, because I already had visited them a few days before and the hotel seemed alright, but the staff....

Stayed at The Avenues “hotel” for 2 nights while visiting friends in Whanganui. The upstairs room (no lifts to second floor) had been updated but had no air conditioning just a large electric fan, so we had to leave the ranch sliding door open during the night for fresh air. When we opened the mini fridge it was turned off and there was a container of festering takeaway food in it! Took it down to reception to show the lady who apologised but was otherwise non-plussed. Reception staff weren’t particularly friendly. We found out that due to a major fire in July 2023 that burnt down the kitchen, bar and restaurant these facilities are closed and under renovation “until further notice”. We would not recommend this “hotel” especially at the price of NZD 250/night.

The Kingsgate gave us another good stay last winter. The Hotel is quite warm at this time of year and presents a drier, warmer set of accommodation options than in other Whanganui alternatives. The rooms were also quite large which afforded one space to spread out.

I was surprised by how poor this was given all the reviews. We arrived after 4pm after a long drive with an infant. We received the key to our room and could drive right to the door which was helpful. However, housekeeping were still finishing the room and when we went in it was obvious it had been done in a rush. The bedding had big wet chemical marks on it over what looked like small patches of vomit. I’m not sure if this was how the blankets were cleaned as opposed to actually washed or if they don’t have any bedding without stains on it. The room itself was filthy. The corners of the carpet were so thick with dust they were white and there were cobwebs in the corners. Our infant was crawling and it’s the first time I’ve been worried by what she will find on the carpet. The beds were bouncy and uncomfortable. We had asked for a cot which wasn’t there. Our room overlooked some rubbish bins and the back of pack n save.
The bathroom was nice and modern, no bath.
The breakfasts was average- not worth the price.

My husband, daughter and I stayed a long weekend here and really enjoyed this hotel.

Book directly on the motel website as it is a lot cheaper.

We booked a pool view family room and were impressed with the space. Our daughter loved the bunk beds.

It was a hop, skip and a jump to the pool and they have pool towels too.

The rooms are very liveable with reasonable sized kitchen and bathroom.

The restaurant is closed, but we had dinner plans anyway. There are plenty of restaurants nearby and we got our breakfast provisions from the supermarket across the road which we cooked in our room.

The motel was tidy, quiet, had a heat pump in the room (the cooling function was much appreciated as we seemed to stay on the hottest day of the year in NZ) and the pool was great too. I definitely recommend this motel to families staying at Whanganui.
