Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Thank you so much for taking such a good care of our ill relative. Host Linda cancelled all her appointments. She took very good care of the ill person. You don’t want to be ill on your holiday, but if it happens, you’re lucky if you have such a great host. We hope to return and enjoy your hospitality, the beautiful views, the comfy beds and your breakfast. Thank you very much, Bald, Mariska and André

I'd stayed at Westwind in 2005 and was looking for somewhere to stay near Thames while we attended a reunion of my husband's family. I was glad to find that Ian and Linda were still in business. The property is in a great location, with a beautiful view down the valley and across the plain. The hospitality was wonderfully warm, as I remembered, and Ian's breakfasts were yummy. Heading home on our second night, it was a very welcome feeling driving up the valley. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: In summer, ask for the Tui room. Paua room looks west and can be a tad warm in the evening.

Lovely place to stay with views over the hills. Very quiet and restful. The accommodation is very good. Spacious clean rooms and a very comfortable bed. The rooms have screens.!!! We made a lovely walk with Ian,Linda and their dogs arount their garden. Breakfasts on both mornings were very good. We came as strangers and left as friends. Thanks Linda & Ian. We hope to see you again.

We last visited Westward in 2010 and were so pleased to find that standards were as high as before. The location has very good views over the hills above Thames and being a good distance off of the road it is very quiet and very restful. The accommodation is tastefully furnished, well laid out, spacious and exceeding clean. Wonderful decorative effects by Linda made the bedroom feel really special and the kingsize bed was extremely comfortable. The ensuite, likewise was a good size with a good supply of accessories such as soaps, skin lotions etc. We had pre-booked dinner for the first night and were rewarded by an excellent meal - the lamb was really succulent. We had a most enjoyable stroll around the gardens with Linda, Ian and their dogs. Breakfasts on both mornings were of a very high standard. We would thoroughly recommend this establishment and would go out of our way to revisit. Thanks Linda & Ian for a wonderful return visit.

Response from WESTWINDHOMESTAY, Owner at Westwind Homestay

We welcomed you into our home, think before you write unkind comments & place photographs on this site, you are playing hard & fast with other people’s lives. We have built up our business over a period of 15 years putting our heart and soul into helping guests from all over the world. Very sad when people hide behind annonominity, we think we know who you were. Why would you place a photograph of our woodpile on Trip advisor when there are so many other beautiful things to photograph at Westwind . We have built this home from Macrocarpa timber which we milled ourselves, its a fantastic building material & very low maintenance. It blends in with the gorgeous bush surroundings & changes colour as it weathers. Why was it a big mistake ? From memory you were offered a great discount, gorgeous views towards Coromandel, a comfortable bed with own bathroom & a delicious breakfast.

We were warmly welcomed by our Hosts Linda and Ian and their 6 dogs and 5 puppies but although host and hostess were very knowledgeable of the area the accommodation did not live up to our expectations. I would advise using New Zealand B&B Association - and after this visit we will on future trips.

Westwinds is set in a lovely rural area with fantastic views from the property. You will be given detailed instructions as to how to find the place and they work beautifully. Ian and Linda are welcoming and friendly and are justifiably proud of the lovely home they have created. Make sure you have a good book to curl up with, stretched out on the sofa on their raised deck, with a glass of wine at hand! There are two guest rooms in total. The bedroom we had was very attractive with an ensuite and its own outside sitting area. With one other set of guests and a travel cot full of new puppies, our time there was very relaxed and sociable. We enjoyed Ian's pancakes and I have successfully tried the recipe at home!

We stayed in the pretty "Tui room", which has a separate entrance and small bathroom. The hosts were very nice - they welcomed us with tea/coffee in the afternoon and had breakfast with us together the next morning. They gave us lots of information about where to go and what to see in the area.

We spend 1 night at Westwind and had such a great time! Linda & Ian are wonderful hosts, they really make you feel confortable. The place is lovely, in the middle of nature, great view from the veranda. We enjoiyed a lot our chat with our hosts & the tour oft eh property. There are quite some animals oft he farm, so that’s great: pings, dogs, cats. We had dinner with our hosts, and it was delicious! Weh ad great lamb and vegetables. The rooms are wonderful and with caracter. The cats can go all over the place, so clsoe the door if you are allergic, and take an antihistaminic staff. We are allergic, but this did not change anything to the great moments we had there. We enjoyed the breakfast. Our hosts had to goto work very early, but let everything for us when we woke up. Weh ad plenty of juices, yogourts, cereals. Our hosts helped us with our sightseeing plans in the area, suggesting usseveral places to go for our day to Rotorua. Weh ad such a great farm experience, and we felt so welcomed, that we loved the place!

Linda and Ian are the best hosts we have met- warm, extremely helpful and friendly. They made a point to mingle with the guests, were chatty and helpful with local insight and attractions. They go the extra mile to make sure your stay is comfortable and would do what they can to make it interesting - cracking home-grown macadamias, sharing their stories of their wonderful pets and enjoying a breakfast with them. If you are looking for a great hospitable home stay, this is the one for you!
