Sunset Motel is a great little motel in a fantastic location, right on a beautiful beach, close to walks along rivers and forests and a short trip to shops either in the community bus or walking along the shore. Our cabin was quiet, clean and equipped with everything we needed for a few days. The staff were super friendly and helpful, with suggestions for special walks and encouraging us to use their laundry and clothes line. The local museum and gold mining experience showed the amazing history of the town.

We were in a twin room with garden courtyard, which had a queen and single beds so was able to add a guest for an extra $25/night. We had everything we needed, though it was a bit on the smaller side for 3 people. From check in to check out, we didn't have to interact with a person- we received our room number via a message and the key was inside. This worked well for us as we didn't have any issues. The bathroom was surprisingly modern, but it had no hanging space at all and the cabinet under the sink was a bit lopsided from water damage. The shower temperature fluctuated a little if someone was also using water in the kitchen. We enjoyed the sunset by the beach that was very close by.

Motel was easy to contact and book online, the check-in details were provided as soon as payment went through, so we had nice flexibility in our arrival. Facilities were cozy but had plenty of space for 2, with a third bed available in the suite. The unit was simple but tidy, and though warm in evening (while facing the sunset) it cooled quickly with its own A/C. Bathroom was small but clean and in working order. Kitchenette was great for basic food storage/prep, and the small porch out front was lovely for morning coffee outside. Quick drive to Thames town. Gorgeous sunset views.

Our recent stay at this older motel revealed a mixed experience. We had booked a room for four and were allocated a unit with a double bed and a single bed in one room, and another single bed oddly placed in the kitchen. Unfortunately, this bed was directly under the air conditioner, rendering it unusable at night due to the cold.

On the positive side, the rooms were generally clean. However, a closer look revealed details like un-swept areas under the beds, indicating a lack of thorough cleaning. The beds, while acceptable, were notably hard, which might not suit everyone's comfort preferences.

We had hoped for a larger unit with a direct sea view, especially since our stay was longer than average. Regrettably, this was not fulfilled, leading to some disappointment. It's worth noting that while the motel's location is excellent for exploring the Coromandel Peninsula, it's not ideal for those primarily seeking a beach experience.

The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the sunset. Although it didn't set directly into the sea, the view of the sun dipping behind the mountain ridge was quite spectacular. In summary, while the motel offers basic accommodations and stunning sunset views, it could greatly benefit from renovation and more attention to detail in cleaning.

We found our cabin very roomy, everything very comfortable. Plenty of soap and towels made available. Nice large bathroom and kitchen had all the essentials in it.

We arrived in the dark and it was very wet weather so it was not the best way to arrive as everything looked dreary. We have a large ute so we did have to park that carefully under the front awning, but it did fit.

However, once we got inside, it was nice and warm once the heat pump had warmed the cabin and it was spacious. We had a fabulous sleep in the peaceful neighbour hood and with the sky clouded over, there were no visible stars and no moonlight and the opposite shores covered in a wet haze. It was wonderful for my niece from Melbourne to see pitch black night for the very first time as we looked out across the Firth of Thames!

Loved being back in NZ, even though the storm stopped all the summer sun we relaxed, sky movies, walked out to the waterfromt, enjoyed the sea air.
The room/living area was large, good size bathroom, kitchen with all the pots n pans, cutlery, fridge and microwave , exactly what we needed.
Friendly locals, loved the shops in Thames, everyone we encountered was just great.
Recommended to all who enjoy the seaside.
The only noise was people parking up at the reserve to check out the views.
We will be back.
Thankyou

Excellent value for money, this motel provided a great place to stay while we explored Thames and Coromandel. We stayed in the three bedroom apartment, which was clean and comfortable with beautiful views. The nearby beach is not conventionally attractive, but great for exploring, with abundant bird life to watch. My only feedback is that the wifi didn't quite reach us, which was a problem because we didn't have mobile data either. The teenagers found a workaround and sat in the car (which was in a carport attached to the unit) so everyone was still happy. Would definitely stay again.

The perfect gateway to the Coromandel. The Sunset Motel is tucked off the road & was the perfect stay for us (two motorcycles & a large dog). Easy access to town & facilities. Clean and quiet & we highly recommend the sea view rooms, perfectly situated to enjoy the setting sun over a drink or two.

This has now become our go to for our sibling getaway. Diane is exceptional she always replies to our emails and is so accommodating. The rooms are always spotless and fresh. Diane has the air con on to warm the place before we arrive.
