Had a magic 3 days here. The campground is so well-maintained with excellent and clean facilities. They've really thought of everything.
The local environment is incredible, so beautiful, a wild rugged coastline. The maze walk is a must - spectacular views and a fun activity with kids.
We're looking forward to returning and have told lots of mates about this epic place to stay. Thanks to the owners/operators, you really have one of NZ's most magic places to stay!

Arriving at Gentle Annie is like arriving in paradise! We stayed over the new year period, and whilst busy, we found that we had plenty of privacy at our campsite. The friendly staff were very relaxed and welcoming plus they make great coffee - I personally recommend the Orange and Date muffin to go with it!
The remote location and proximity to the river mouth, coast and bush give you a wonderful taste of life on the stunning West Coast. Thanks very much to the wonderful team of staff working hard to make everybody’s stay so special over this busy time of year!

Having not been for a while it was great to see that it still not over developed.
It is true that there are only 2 showers and 4 toilets, and that certainly would put the presure on at peak times, however for much of the year it is adequate and part of the charm. They do have plans to build more.
There is a gas cooking top and gas BBQ in the covered open air dining area (a light over the BBQ would be a helpful addition) beside the wood fired pizza oven and large fire pit. The kitchen area has fridges, freezers, jug and a microwave.

If you want laid back and authentic classic Kiwi then this is the place for you. I mean where else are you going to find a cafe that has an honesty box for cakes when it isn’t staffed??

The muffins are great and they also stock a reasonable choice of gluten free items, including pizza bases, along with locally made wild game pies.

Jesse is helpful and friendly. There is a range of books, clothing etc for sale to remind you of your stay.

Weka and Pukeko patrol the grounds and Piwakawaka (fantails) great you when you arrive and walk around.

We were disappointed with the site, it has some nice views but is not the best location for walks. We were told the Cow Shed Cafe would be open when we called, but on arriving discovered it was closed for the season! This was one of the reasons we chose to stay there.
Be warned about the road. Whilst the website states it suitable for all vehicles, apparently one vehicle a week is pulled out of the ditch and we have witnessed this.
There was only one shower and we did not get access to this, it was mostly being used by staff.
Overall we were very disappointed and will not return, there are much better campsites in the area.

I'm sorry to read your review FarmerJoe. I'm not sure how you had a misunderstanding about the Cowshed Coffee shop being open in mid winter-on any advertising we clearing say that it is seasonal, I"m the only one who receives phone calls and I would never mislead anyone into thinking it was open at this time of year I have no reason to do this! Perhaps you misunderstood, as the Cowshed Coffee shop building is open year round as a lounge/reception space with free wifi and use of our pizza oven which is being enjoyed by camping guests everyday. Our cafe is just open over the summer months. Your comments about the frequency of accidents on the road coming into Gentle Annie is not true. It's a pretty 3km gravel road, following the beautiful Mokihinui River, council owned and maintained, hundreds of vehicles per day travel along it without incident. Occasionally, due to poor driving, a vehicle goes into a ditch and needs to be pulled out-this can always be avoided if you travel slowly and pass with care. Being off of the main highway is what makes Gentle Annie feel so quiet and private and we're regularly told by guests it's what makes the place feel so special. Your comments about our showers is not true. We currently have two showers (with more being designed at the moment) on the very off chance that our two staff were using the showers this means they would have been occupied for 10 minutes during your stay. A small family business, that has been looking after this special place for visitors to enjoy since the mid 70's, we try our best to offer a place for everyone to enjoy. Sorry we weren't able to please you FarmerJoe and I hope you find what you're looking for. Future guests, please put this review into context against all the other positive ones! Also be sure to checkout our Campermate listing Gentle Annie Seaside Accommodation and Rankers listing (currently voted #2 camping ground in NZ) We look forward to having you here to enjoy our special place!

We came to be rejuvenated by nature and the fresh sea breeze, but instead we arrived at our accommodation to find it drenched in strong smelling chemical perfumes. A spray had been used on all the bedding, curtains, and every surface. There was also a very nasty smelling reed diffuser which left a permanent smell following its removal.

Very difficult to air out the accommodation due to the potency of perfumes and cleaning products used.

We did what we could to request the products be replaced in future with natural, inoffensive and environmentally appropriate options, but the response we got from the owners was disappointingly defensive and we felt unheard by them.

No concern was shown by the owners about their use of toxic chemicals on people and the environment, even though one of us also had an allergic reaction.

We were advised by these guests that they didn't like the smell of the perfume in their room. We openly listened to their concerns and assured them that the cleaning products we use don't have any strong chemicals-we use water/vinegar/citrus based cleaning products. The natural essential oil reed diffuser and dried flowers in the room, were happily and immediately removed as well as replacing all of their bedding. We did everything we could including discounting their stay and in the many years of providing accommodation to guests we haven't had such unreasonable guests. This very inaccurate and (as can be seen by the many other reviews we have had) out of character review should be removed by Tripadviser.

Booked for 4 nights stayed 3 due to the lack of toilets and showers. It is a great location and beach area is good for bonfires and fishing. cafe does great food and the caravan offering burgers and chips is another option. But 2 showers isn't enough for amount of people staying, and they get dirty quickly. 2 ladies toilets 2 mens. One tiny kitchen with one sink, and one sink outside. we stayed in the non powered paddock close to road and the beach which made it a long walk when you did need toilet. Yes they had portaloos dotted around, but the smelly non flush kind. Doc camp site ones are cleaner. sorry but your lack of facilities especially for the amount of bookings you accept isn't worth returning or recommending.

Gentle Annie camp ground is an absolute must when discovering the best of New Zealand. fantastic sites for all RV's, caravans and tents with plenty of room for awnings and vehicle. The Cowshed cafe on site, does fresh baked muffins and pies every day along with the best espresso coffee. Adjacent to the cafe is a wood fired pizza oven for everyone to use and campers were actually making scones in it for Mothers day. the showers are amazing, floor mounted spotlights, some with an open roof to view the stars at night and individually coloured to match your mood. There is direct access to the beach and river for all activities. the location is perfect for waking to the sunrise or watching the magnificent sunset on the seas horizon. the Charming Creek walkway to the waterfalls and Chasm Creek glow worms are a must while staying. there is somuch more, but you will have to go to experience this perfect paradise. see you there!

Absolutely one of those places that I'd love to visit again. Very welcoming hosts, beautiful site, felt remote, but still close to a town. The house (Cabbage Tree cottage) we stayed in was clean, and had everything you needed. Small homely touches like fresh flowers in the living room when we arrived. Thoughtfully laid out. Great views, plenty of walks in an interesting area.

We really enjoyed our (brief) stay at the Gentle Annie campground. It has a great feel: rustic character created by the covered cooking/eating area, pizza oven, open fire, and cafe that we could sit in, even when it is after hours.
Beautiful spot, and the maze is cool too.
The wekas seem to have over-run the place. Fun to have them around as a novelty factor, but glad we don't have to live with them all the time!

Love this place, been there a couple of times. West Coast magic enhanced by great facilities and great staff. On our last visit I saw there was a new 'Burger Bus' that served food and milkshakes etc until 8pm. One of those places where all the campsites are great.
